Rules Q&A
- Q: I'm not talking about Wedge or Shinjo's Breath, I'm talking about those cards which don't quite make the cut in Open, but might in Gold.
My choices, A to E: Court Jester
A: It already has a substitute: Imperial Scrutiny (AOF). Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 May 2002", 7 May 2002 - Q: Question #1: How does a card like this, or Dead Eyes, or Shosuro Tech make it into Gold, but Shinjo's Breath doesn't?
A: Shinjo's Breath is a speed military support card. Since Unicorn had a decent alternative (Shinjo Technique), they got that instead.
Dead Eyes is also speed military, but it has drawbacks instead of just benefits, plus Hida Technique is too weak to be a good alternative.
Shosuro Technique is not speed military. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 February 2002", 16 Feb 2002 - Q: <snip> Path of Wisdom : Immediately before your end phase, if this card is in your discard pile, you may place it in your fate hand. Shinjo's Breath : If the unit is led by a Unicorn Personality, you may return this card to your hand at the beginning of the current player's end phase. (Do each of these have a repeatable trigger, if the player wishes to avoid discarding down to 8 at the end).
No, and irrelevant. You discard at the end of the turn, so cards that enter your hand "before" or "at the beginning of" your End Phase will always be there before it's time to discard.
Hm. The current rulebook says that you discard down to eight after drawing a card. There is no requirement that you cannot have more than eight cards at the end of your turn. Tamori Hiroko allows you to draw more cards as a reaction to your discard, giving you up to eleven (or more with Kolat Masters, Eggs, etc :-) See the wording in the rulebook p 59...
A: The original question concerned whether it was possible to return these cards to your hand multiple times in one End Phase. The reason I say "irrelevant" is that they're both worded so they return to your hand before your normal discard happens. Since your normal discard is pretty much the only thing that will ever put one of these cards back into your discard pile (barring a possible one or two rarely-placed Reactions I can't think of offhand -- ask Leon), it doesn't matter what the general rule is on "reacting" more than once to a trigger which is really a continuous condition. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 December 2001", 15 Dec 2001 - Q: Path of Wisdom : Immediately before your end phase, if this card is in your discard pile, you may place it in your fate hand. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 December 2001", 13 Dec 2001 - Q: Thanks, Jeff and Vaughn. You guys can skip my latest post last night on this thread that has my list of examples if you want. The other card that I thought had 'may' in it was Awakening Shokuji Doju, but the card search engine doesn't have the word. (That and the Path and Shinjo's Breath were my big three points of confusion on 'may') I guess this was errata'd to make the 'go home' clause mandatory?
A: It's the other way 'round. Errata was issued to make it OPTIONAL. The word "may" should have appeared on the card but did not. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 December 2001", 13 Dec 2001 - Q: From the archive under "Resolution Segment": (Note: Terrains resolve in the Battle Action segment, not the Resolution Segment.) [JA, 14 February 2001]
From the Spirit Wars Rulebook pg. 43: A Terrain's effects resolve after all players consecutively pass during the Battle Action Segment. Players cannot take actions in a battle after a Terrain resolves; at that point, the Battle Action Segment ends. Any Terrain in play is automatically destroyed immediately after the Resolution Segment.
Even though Entrapping Terrain says "the battle ends without resolution," I would think that this only means that you don't count up force to see which army wins and so forth. There HAS to be a resolution segment at that battle, otherwise Entrapping Terrain would never be destroyed, because, according to the rulebook, Terrains are detroyed immediately after the resolution segment.
A: They're destroyed after the battle ends, whether it resolves or not. (This has been addressed in the Gold rulebook.) Entrapping Terrain is not the only card that can end a battle immediately; there are all sorts of terrains that could get "stuck" in play when something like Torrential Rain goes off if only a true resolution could destroy them. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for late February 2001", 10 Mar 2001 - Q: Set up: I'm playing Unicorn, my opponent is playing Crab. He is playing with Tetsuya Sensei. I declare an attack, assign units and declare a battle. He discards his Sensei and sends my units home.
Question: Has that battle resolved? Or may I Shinjo's Breath a unit back into that battle? The card says nothing about resolving, but everyone seemed to think that discarding it ended the battle. I disagree. Who was right?
A: You were. Tetsuya Sensei (and the Dark Path of Shadow, btw) don't specifically end the battle without resolution, they just send away all units currently at the battle. Shinjo's Breath is a perfectly legit way to get around the Sensei. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 2nd", 2 Jan 2001
