Rules Q&A
- Q: About this ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=97661 Wouldn't Rentatsu's honor loss ability be constantly reduced by two if you reacted with Shiro Chugo's Reaction anytime before Rentatsu's initial ability resolves? (i.e. the bowing for the action)
Just curious...
Relavent Texts:
Shiro Chugo Political Reaction: Before an action's resolution, choose your performing unbowed Courtier: Reduce any Honor gain or loss from the action's effects by 2.
Bayushi Rentatsu Limited: Bow Rentatsu: While Rentatsu remains bowed, you may negate his straightening and after each of your turns begins, choose a player; he loses 2 Honor.
A: Shiro Chugo creates an Ongoing Effect - technically an Indefinite Conditional Effect - that triggers each time the original action is about to cause an honour gain or loss, and reduces that gain or loss by 2.
Like all Ongoing Effects with no stated duration, it lasts until the end of turn.
Rentatsu's ability also creates an Ongoing effect, but unlike Shiro Chugo's ability, the duration is specified: "While Rentatsu remains bowed."
Thus, the negation created by Shiro Shugo ends at the end of the turn, and has no effect on Rentatsu's honour losses. Alex Jones, "Shiro Chugo + Rentatsu (Cont.)", 30 Apr 2012 - Q: I didn't exactly find anything specifically answering this so I'll ask.
If I take an action that gains me honour (let's say Tell the Tale) and my opponent uses Rhetoric to transfer it themself, can I then use Shiro Chugo to reduce the gain by 2?
Now what if the action has a delayed honour gain or loss (let's say my opponent plays Ambush) and my opponent Rhetorics the loss to me, can I then use Shiro Chugo to reduce the loss by 2?
Rhetoric Reaction: Before a player gains or loses Honor from an action's effects, bow your performing Courtier: Choose another player. If the Courtier's Chi is higher than or equal to the Honor gain or loss, the chosen player instead of the original player takes the gain or loss.
Shiro Chugo Reaction: Before an action's resolution, choose your performing unbowed Courtier: Reduce any Honor gain or loss from the action's effects by 2.
Thank you for your time.
A: No.
Shiro Chugo's Reaction is taken "before an action's resolution", but Rhetoric is played "before a players gains or loses honour from an action's effects" - and since effects are created during the action's resolution (or after, for delayed effects), this is too late for Shiro Chugo's Reaction to be taken.
And while you may take Shiro Chugo's Reaction in response to Rhetoric, it won't achieve anything, since Rhetoric doesn't create a new honour gain or loss, it merely changes who receives it. Alex Jones, "Rhetoric + Shiro Chugo", 8 Apr 2012 - Q: Regarding this:

How is this interaction any different than the interaction between Game of Dice and Isawa Kimi xp2?

Regards,
A: The wording is different.
Shiro Chugo sets up an ongoing effect that will reduce any gain or loss from the action's effects by 2. It isn't checking to see whether or not the action caused the gain during its resolution (as most actions do) or at a later point - the reduction is triggered when the gain happens (as long as it happens in the same turn).
Kimi, on the other hand, requires the resolution of an action that put cards into a player's hand. A Game of Dice is not an action that put cards into a player's hand at the time it resolves, and therefore is not a valid trigger for Kimi. Jon Palmer, "Tamori Kazushige vs. Shiro Chugo follow up", 4 Apr 2012 - Q: Can Tamori Kazushige's honor gain be reduced by Shiro Chugo's reaction?
Tamori Kazushige
Open: If it is another player's turn, target one of his Personalities: Before this phase ends, straighten him. Before this turn ends, if the Personality did not assign to attack this turn, gain 2 Honor.
Shiro Chugo
Political Reaction: Before an action's resolution, choose your performing unbowed Courtier: Reduce any Honor gain or loss from the action's effects by 2.
A: Yes it can.
The Shiro Chugo player must remember however to use the reaction before the resolution of Kazushige's ability, not when the honor gain would happen. Ben Higgins, "Tamori Kazushige vs. Shiro Chugo", 4 Apr 2012 - Q: Since I saw the ruling that said if a personality was gaining 2 honor and was dishonored and facing a Shiro Chugo deck and the Shiro Chugo player lowered the honor gain by 2, the dishonored player would still rehonor, then could I buy a courtier aligned with my clan with a base 0 PH for full and activate Destructive Priorities?
A: No, that's quite a different situation.
The reason the rehonoring still occurs in the example you gave is that rehonoring is substituted for the gain BEFORE Shiro Chugo has the chance to reduce it.
But a gain of 0 still = not a gain. So, gaining 0 Honor will not trigger Reactions such as Destructive Priorities'. Brook Cunningham, "Destructive Priorities", 14 Mar 2012 - Q: A dishonorable personality performs an action with an honor gain. Shiro Chugo's reaction reduces the gain to 0. Does the personality still rehonors?
Thanks!
A: The personality will rehonor, according to the Timing sequence for the order of effects.
Rehonoring a personality from an honor gain is a Substitution, which occurs in step B.
Shiro Chugo's modification is not Delay, Negation, Prevention nor Substitution, and thus would've been applied in step C. Ben Higgins, "Shiro Chugo and Rehonoring", 2 Mar 2012 - Q: Two questions about Shiro Chugo's Reaction and the interaction with Scars of War and Yasuki Tsujiken.
If I play a Scars of War on a holding can my opponent react with Shiro Chugo to reduce the honour loss when the holding is bowed by 2? If not, can he use the react later when the holding is bowed?
Same question about Yasuki Tsujiken's reaction and Shiro Chugo's reaction.
The way I see it there are these options: A) Shiro Chugo can be used when the action is played, reducing all future honour losses by 2. B) Shiro Chugo can be used when bowing a holding with one of the effects (However in this case I wonder what the trigger for Shrio Chugo is) C) Shiro Chugo can not be used against either card.
Shiro Chugo: Political Reaction: Before an action's resolution, choose your performing unbowed Courtier: Reduce any Honor gain or loss from the action's effects by 2.
Scars of War: Limited: Bow your performing Courtier and target a Holding: Until the game ends, after each time it bows or an ability on it resolves, its controller loses 1 Honor.
Yasuki Tsujiken: Reaction: After Tsujiken enters play, target a Holding: Until Tsujiken leaves play, after each time its controller bows it, he loses 1 Honor. Open: Bow Tsujiken and target a Holding: Straighten it. You may bow it if its base Gold Cost is 4 or lower.
A: Answer:
D) Shiro Chugo can only be be used when the action is taken, right before its effects resolve (per Shiro Chugo's wording). And, like all actions without a stated duration, its reduction effect has a default duration of "until the turn ends". So, if you React with Shiro Chugo to the action, and then bow the Holding some time between when the action is taken and the end of THAT TURN, then THAT instance of the Honor loss will be reduced. Any time past that point, after you bow the Holding, the Honor loss will be its normal amount. Brook Cunningham, "Shiro Chugo and "delayed" honour losses", 14 Feb 2012
