Rules Q&A
- Q: I am playing Unicorns on Shiro Shinjo and one of my personalities has Chukandomo attached. This personality and my Stronghold are both bowed, and there is another personality with higher Personal Honor, so my personality will die. It's my turn now, and time for Straightening Phase. Am I able to unbow my Stronghold first, so when my personality dies, I can use the reaction to attach Chukandomo to another one of my personalities? Or will death occur before I have chance to unbow my Stronghold?
A: Well, the destruction has the same timing as your Straightening, so it really doesn't matter. By the time you have an opportunity to play Reactions after the Destruction, you'd have already straightened all your other cards and your stronghold. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 May 2004", 24 May 2004 - Q: You can't use SS reaction if it is bowed to save an item, correct?
A: Correct (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 24). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 17 October 2003, Part 3", 17 Oct 2003 - Q: Hi there,
I have recently encountered such problem. Let's say i have a personality in a battle, who has Fan of Command (or Menhari-Gata), which gives that personality Tactician trait. I use it, and then somehow move that item to another personality (either using Iuchi Yue's ability, or the one from Shiro Shinjo). Another personality gets that item, and receives Tactician trait. Can i use it?
A: The Tactician trait? On the new personality? Sure. The personality who now has the Item has just gotten the Tactician trait, and has not used it this turn. It's the same as if you had played Moment of Brilliance on him/her. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for June 16, 2003", 16 Jun 2003 - Q: Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng: Unique. Shadowlands. Lose 4 Honor. Place a number of +1/+1 Porcelain tokens on the Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng equal to this Personality's Chi. This Personality gains the Shadowlands trait and the ability "Battle: Fear 3" while the Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng is attached. The Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng cannot be moved among Personalities. When the Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng is destroyed, destroy this Personality. During each of your Events Phases, remove a Porcelain token. When you remove the last Porcelain token, destroy the Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng.
Shiro Shinjo: Items you own have +1 Focus Value. Reaction: Bow your Stronghold after one of your Personalities is destroyed to return to play an Item that Personality had. Attach the Item to any of your legal Personalities, ignoring costs and entering-play effects.
Would the "cannot be moved among Personalities" clause on the Mask stop Shiro Shinjo's ability from yanking the Porcelain Mask out of the pits of Jigoku and slapping it on someone else?
A: No. You are not moving it from one Personality to another. You are bringing it into play from the discard pile.
Note that the Mask would not get any Porcelain tokens, and you would not lose 4 Honor, as those are both coming-into-play effects.
The Rules Team is currently debating how literally to read the Masks' self-destruction clause. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 March 2003", 18 Mar 2003 - Q: Say I have Atarasi's Armor attached to a personality. ["Open: Once per turn, this Personality gains either the Double Chi trait or the Tactician trait until the turn ends."] I use the action to give the Personality Double Chi. In the duel that ensues, the personality is destroyed, and I use Shiro Shinjo to move the Armor to another of my personalities. Can the new Personality use the Armor's action? "This personality" has not used it yet this turn...
A: The "once per turn" limits how often the Armor's action can be used. It's already been used once, so it can't be used again. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 January 2002", 9 Jan 2003 - Q: If I am using the Shiro Shinjo stronghold and I have an item attached to a personality, lets say Naishi, and i use the open action on the item, then the peep with the item dies and I return it to play using the stronghold, can I use the open action again?
A: No. It's still the same card, and it remembers its ability being used. Destruction does not erase "card memory" in L5R. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 September 2002", 17 Sep 2002 - Q: shiro shinjo. does it mean that when you focus in a duel with an item it has +1 to its focus value?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Shiro Shinjo?", 11 Apr 2005
