Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Barley Farm 2G Farm Bow this card: Produce 1 Gold. Reaction: When paying a Gold cost: Produce 1 Gold. (This can be used together with bowing this card to produce Gold)." Rules Q&A
- Q: For example: After winning a raid, can you target Barley Farm and bow it to produce 5 gold and does it's ability also get affected allowing you a non-bow for 5 gold on top of that?
A: The bowing effect produces 5. The Reaction produces 1. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 December 2004", 10 Dec 2004 - Q: For example: After winning a raid, can you target Barley Farm and bow it to produce 5 gold and does it's ability also get affected allowing you a non-bow for 5 gold on top of that?
A: The Reaction's production is not modified. The non-Action production is boosted. Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 December 2004", 9 Dec 2004 - Q: Can the reaction on Barley Farm be used in the Dynasty phase of the turn it is purchased on?
A: Not unless you managed to somehow straighten the Barley Farm. Non-fortification holdings enter play bowed, and you can't use the abilities of bowed cards. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 September 2004", 15 Sep 2004 - Q: Can the Reaction on Barley Farm, and the actual Barley Farm itself, be used in conjunction with a Crystal Mine to produce 7G? In other words, can I bow the Barley Farm and the Crystal Mine to produce 6G, then use the Reaction to produce the 1 extra gold?
A: No. Barley Farm is bowed by that point. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 December 2003, Part 2", 2 Dec 2003 - Q: Relevant Text: Open: Target another player's Holding with a base Gold cost of 1-4: This card copies one of its base abilities that does not itself copy abilities, or one of its Gold-producing traits.
Since it doesn't say 'until the end of the turn' nor 'permanently', how does it work?
a) Copy abilities for ever (making a hell of a headache if your opponent has Barley Farm). b) Copy until the end of the turn (making it a very good card).
Thank you (again).
Addendum: I searched the forum for this answer but wasn't able to find any, and so, before asking any question I went to the wiki, but the answer was not there (or I wasn't able to find). Copying Abilities - Wiki
.
A: Here it is:
Ongoing Effects: "Ongoing effects last until the end of the turn in which they were applied unless otherwise indicated."
So, it doesn't have to say "until the end of the turn"; that's the default unless otherwise stated, and that's how long the ability or trait stays copied for Stolen Merchandise. Brook Cunningham, "Stolen Merchandise's Ability", 29 Aug 2011 - Q: can i use the "Reaction" on the Barley Farm to pay for itself when its coming into play?? thank you.
A: No.
At the time when you need to pay for the Barley Farm, it's not yet in play, so you can't use its ability. Alex Jones, "Barley Farm", 1 Apr 2011 - Q: All those reactions that say when paying the gold cost, i.e. Barley Farm, Offices of the emerald magistrates, do you have to already have gold produced towards paying for the cost in order to use the reaction?
A: No. "When paying" means you are currently in the act of paying for something, but does not pre-suppose that you have put any Gold toward that payment yet. Brook Cunningham, "When Paying", 16 Feb 2011 - Q: [OBH] Do Wealth tokens increase gold production of reactions like the ones on Luxurious Silk or Barley Farm?
A: Well, as it stands, the 20F Rules are unfortunately rather unclear and arguably contradictory in regard as to whether +1GP tokens will increase things other than the "Gold Production" stat in the upper right of Holdings and middle-ish right of Strongholds or not, since the stat itself was only introduced in 20F.
But, the existence of the card "Bookkeeper" (and the fact that all of the printed cards that give out +1GP wealth tokens are from pre-20F Ivory except for one anyway) indicates that such a token will indeed increase any Gold Production of any kind on a Holding, be it from a stat, trait, or action. Such a token will not, however, give/create "Gold Production" out of nothing if placed on a Holding that does not produce Gold in any way.
(Replying to a player: "So for the upcoming tournament that's a 'yes'? 😜") For Legacy (and indeed, for Ivory/20F contemporary and arc-simulation as well), it has to be a "yes". Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 13 Apr 2025
