Rules Q&A
- Q: Also, I remeber ready somewhere that using the Egg of Pan Ku on Shosuro will will allow you to use the After entering play Reaction. I the Rule Archive I found a Ruling 'Under Entering Play Section" saying that Egging someone is not considered bringing them into play. Which one is it?
A: You bring Egg of P'an Ku into play when you play it. After that is changes form into a Personality. This is the same timing window as the Reaction on Shosuro. Ergo, you have not brought a Personality into play (it wasn't a Personality when you played it), but you have brought "this card" into play, which is the only requirement for Shosuro's Reaction.
The ruling under "Entering play" refers to the Transformation Effect of the Egg, which DOES NOT count as "entering play" - but putting the Egg itself into play from you hand is most certainly involves the Egg "entering play."
In short:
1.) A card that is already in play changing card-types doesn't count as bringing a card of the new type into play.
2.) Bringing a card into play that will later change its card-type DOES count as bringing a card of the old type into play, as well as bringing "this card" into play. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 November 2004", 30 Nov 2004 - Q: Questions guys:
1. Is Shosuro technique (the battle part of it) a force bonus or more along the lines of a change in the printed force until the end of the turn? In other words will In Search of the Future remove it?
A: Nothing changes printed numbers without saying so explicly. Shosuro Technique changes the total Force. It's a bonus unless you targeted an opposing Personality with lower or equal Force to yours. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 16 Feb. 204", 18 Feb 2004 - Q: So if I accept a duel, I can't play Accept With Honor, and a Shosuro Tech, and then use Kakita Masazumi's action? I thought the rule was you can only use each printed reaction once, but could use as many reactions as you had available.
A: Not what I meant to say. Based on the context of the original question, I thought the assertion was that a single card could make multiple Reactions to a trigger. Which, of course, it cannot. My apologies. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 December 2003, Part 2", 2 Dec 2003 - Q: Higatsuku wielding Dotanuki forces a challenge. Can I play Shosuro Tech 1st, and then gain the +2 chi from the Dotanuki?
A: Well, you can't play Shosuro Technique on Higatsuku, because he's bowed from his action. But assuming you could (like, if you were using a different set of rules...), it would work. Shosuro Technique's trigger happens before you become an opposing personality in a duel. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 13th, 2003", 13 Aug 2003 - Q: Shosuro technique is copying an aspect (the Chi) of the opponent in the duel, so why does it not target?
A: It does; just not that stat. The rules tell you what is targeted, but not *what* is targeted. *What* is targeted, as Jeff Alexander mentioned in an earlier post, is anything you have to chose or that is affected. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 July 2003", 2 Jul 2003 - Q: Higatsuku has bowed to play his duel, can his own player play Shosuro Tech. to copy the other person's chi, then strike and poisoned weapon, or whatever?
A: His controller cannot play Shosuro Technique. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 February 2003", 7 Feb 2003 - Q: Higatsuku bows to force the other play to challenge him. You then can NOT target him with Shosuro tech to raise his chi to the opponents level. This has been ruled upon more than once by Jeff.
Well, I'll be damned! After reading his most recent rulings, it is now true that he can't use it.
A: It's always been true. Shosuro Technique has been considered to target your own Personality since it was made, even before the targeting rules changed. Otherwise the lower gold cost for "targeting a Scorpion Clan or Ninja Personality" would not work correctly. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 February 2003", 7 Feb 2003 - Q: A clarification of the last few rulings on reactions.
1. Shosuro tech when reacting to a duel does NOT target your opponents card, correct?
A: As I've already said twice, no, it doesn't. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 February 2003", 6 Feb 2003 - Q: 2. Shosuro tech when reacting to a dule DOES target your personality? If it does, why isnt it targeting your opponent then?
A: You're not choosing him and you're not doing anything to him. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 February 2003", 6 Feb 2003 - Q: If an uncertainty is played on a per. in a battle than a Shosuro tech, do you add the penalty from the uncertainty after the new force is set.
A: Again I quote page 32:
] It is possible to set a card's value directly to a particular ] number. Do not apply any bonuses or penalties already in effect ] to this new number -- in essence, they're already part of it. ] Do apply any later changes as you normally would.
When you set a Personality's Force to 3, or 8, or 1, or 99, that is its new current total value. That is the value it's going to have until a new bonus or penalty is created or an existing one changes or wears off. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 January 2003", 29 Jan 2003 - Q: Ok,
A friend in my local play area is asking difficult questions this weekend.
1.
Is Akasha considered a Creature and Human? She has the Traits Legacy of the Naga and Human.
A: She wouldn't be a Creature in any event -- Naga are only Nonhuman.
The answer, though, is "no". A card cannot be both Human and Nonhuman at the same time. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 January 2003", 22 Jan 2003 - Q: Political (card text). If a Shadowed Tower of the Shosuro player is fielding Shukuen, does this qualify for the 'after playing a Political Action card' trigger to reshuffle the Kiho into the fate deck?
Um... Yes, since it makes the action Political, not just its effects.
Er, the Action becomes Political, but it's the Action Card which is reshuffled, and that's not Political.
A: DA rulebook p. 33, third item: a card is a "Keyword" card if it is an Action card and one of its actions has the "Keyword" trait. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 August 2002", 26 Aug 2002 - Q: Political (card text). If a Shadowed Tower of the Shosuro player is fielding Shukuen, does this qualify for the 'after playing a Political Action card' trigger to reshuffle the Kiho into the fate deck?
A: Um... Yes, since it makes the action Political, not just its effects. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 August 2002", 23 Aug 2002 - Q: "Kwanchai and Shosuro Tech are both extremely good cards, but with the new targetting rules they don't combine that well anymore. If Kwanchai bows to replace somebody in a duel, you cannot use Shosuro Tech because it targets both duelists (and Kwanchai is bowed). It worked before Gold, but not anymore..."
This is cut & pasted from another site, but I wanted to know if this is true?
A: It's true. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 February 2002", 22 Feb 2002 - Q: Question #1: How does a card like this, or Dead Eyes, or Shosuro Tech make it into Gold, but Shinjo's Breath doesn't?
A: Shinjo's Breath is a speed military support card. Since Unicorn had a decent alternative (Shinjo Technique), they got that instead.
Dead Eyes is also speed military, but it has drawbacks instead of just benefits, plus Hida Technique is too weak to be a good alternative.
Shosuro Technique is not speed military. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 February 2002", 16 Feb 2002 - Q: Example situation: Personality A, controlled by me, is I. Challenged by personality B. I play Shosuro tech... Does it target A, B, and/or I. Challenge. I think it targets personality A and I. Challenge, but does not target personality B.
A: It targets both personalities. This new targeting stuff is going to take a *long* time to iron out. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 25th", 25 Jul 2001 - Q: Then the question becomes: Does it target the card creating the duel, your personality entering the duel, or both?
Enough Talk? It targets both personalities, the one that you pick to challenge the offending talker, and the offending talker themselves.
Actually I thought most of the e-mail was about Shosuro tech... At least that's what I was talking about. ;)
A: Shosuro Tech also targets both personalities. It's lucky for me that, although the cards in question were different, the answer remains the same. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 23rd", 23 Jul 2001 - Q: In open format, will Shosuro (from dawn) join a ninja player? ?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Loyal", 30 Mar 2005 - Q: Will work on Personalities whose honor requirements were ignored for purposes of coming into play (e.g., Toturi's Army stronghold) but not those ignored continually (e.g., Naga strongholds). [Reversal, DW, email, 4/7/99]
How does this work With the Iron Fortress of the Daidoji? Shadowed tower of the Shosuro?
Can this card be used with show of good faith?
A: Both are continuous, so their reductions will be in force when you play I Believed in You. Zen Faulkes, "I believed in you", 5 Mar 2005
