Rules Q&A
- Q: I have some questions about Shosuro: Can I overlay her on a scorpion personnality if I play The Dark Path of Shadow?
A: Yes. Dark Path of the Shadow players have the "Ninja" trait as their Faction Trait. Shosuro has the Ninja trait, so she's of your Faction and that meets the requirements for Loyal. Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 January 2005", 10 Jan 2005 - Q: If I overlay Shosuro, when playing scorpion,on Bayushi Motomu, she keep the ability of Motomu. But what about the traits? Does she become a samourai?
A: The Diamond Edition Rulebook is clear on this:
"The later version keeps the earlier one's attached cards, tokens, bowed and dishonored status, and all changes currently in effect, and permanently gains all its abilities. The later version's printed stats and traits override those on the earlier version." (DE Rulebook, page 66, "Experienced Traits")
She does not become a Samurai. Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 January 2005", 10 Jan 2005 - Q: I have read something strange in the accumulated rulings in the Experienced chapter: "An Experienced card can be overlaid on a less Experienced card even if the title of the less Experienced card does not match the trait on the Experienced card, as long as there is a chain along the experience levels. E.g., the Experienced 7 Shosuro can be overlaid on either Shosuro (whose trait reads, "Experienced Ninja Shapeshifter") or the Ninja Shapeshifter. [ZF, 10 April 2003]"
Please explain beccause Shosuro require me to overlay her on a scorpion personality and there are not.
A: Well, it starts with the misconception that Shosuro requires you to overlay her on a Scorpion Clan personality. Shosuro says, "May overlay any Scorpion Clan Personality you control."
Note the word, "May." You can bring Shosuro into play by any other method as normally permitted by other card effects or the rulebook. You can pay Shosuro's Gold Cost and buy her out of the Province just like any other Personality. You can also overlay Shosuro on a less-experienced version of her character, just like any other Experienced Personality. It just so happens that Shosuro has a funny experienced-versions chain that goes: Ninja Shapeshifter - Nonexperienced, Shosuro - Experienced Ninja Shapeshifter, Shosuro - Experienced 7 - Scorpion Clan Thunder. Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 January 2005", 10 Jan 2005 - Q: Is Shosuro's reaction considered an 'entering play effect'?
A: No. It is an Action, not an effect, and its effects are those of an Action, not "entering play." Martin Lund, "Rules for 4 January 2005", 8 Jan 2005 - Q: I'm wondering specifically if you can duplicate this reaction when an Egg of P'an Ku comes into play copying Shosuro.
A: Yes, I've fielded this question before.
The Egg enters play. After it enters play it copies Shosuro's card. Since it is - still - "after entering play" timing, you can use any "after entering play" Reaction Abilities you may have just gained from copying. Martin Lund, "Rules for 4 January 2005", 8 Jan 2005 - Q: Talking about some new cards, a friend told me that following the rule applied to Kyofu about not counting as hida kuroda for the purposes of bonuses of the non exp version of hida kuon, Onnotangu's Hand from DotE, was not an obsidian card.
The foo rule says that if a card has in its title or as a bold trait the "foo" word on it, it counts as a foo card, but as i can remember the kyofu ruling, i am not sure if there is some exception about experiended "X" cards. Anyway it would be ridiculous that following that rule, Shosuro ( exp ninja shapeshifter), wont be considered ninja.
A: There are a few traits that can't be separated such as Faction Titles ("Dragon Clan" does not make you "Dragon" and "Toturi's Army" does not make you "Toturi) and "Clan Champion". The "Soul of" clause traits, hyphenated words, and restriction clauses like, "May only attach to a Ninja" have an exemption under the Keyword Rule. Reserved game terms like "Army," also have exemptions.
Experience levels, however, do not have any such exemption in the Rules that I can dig up. If a card has the "Experienced Hida Kuroda" trait, then it is a "Hida Kuroda" card, though it does not have the title "Hida Kuroda." Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 December 2004", 30 Dec 2004 - Q: Hi all, This has been asked before a few times but never answered. Who exactly does the "original personality" on the card refer to if the infiltrator has been attached and discarded repeatedly during a single battle?
A: The very first personality it was attached to this turn
B: The very first surviving personality it was attached to this turn
C: The very last personality it was attached to prior to the end of the battle
D: The very last surviving personality it was attached to prior to the end of the battle
E: Any personality it was ever attached to till the end of the battle (player's choice)
F: Any surviving personality it was ever attached to till the end of the battle (player's choice)
G: Someone else that I left out...
A: Battle: Discard this card: If this card is attached to a Scorpion Clan Personality, create a 3F/1C Scorpion Clan Samurai Personality card in his army. After the battle ends, remove the created Personality from the game, then return this card to play attached to its original Personality.
H: The Personality it was attached to when you discarded it. If that Personality is not in play, the final effect does not occur and Shosuro Infiltrator doesn't return to play. Martin Lund, "Rules for 10 December 2004", 13 Dec 2004 - Q: I've heard that the above combo is legal, but may i ask who exactly does the "original personality" stated on shosuro infiltrator refer to?
Does it refer to the very first personality it was attached to, the last, or any one it was ever attached to from the first to the last?
A: Each use refers to the Personality that had the infiltrator attached when you made that use of the ability.
If you have multiple conflicting effects telling you to go to return the card to play attached to several different otherwise legal locations, the active player can choose the order in which they resolve. The first one to resolve returns to the card to play, and normally all the other attempts would be negated since the infiltrator is already in play. Martin Lund, "Rules for 4 Decemeber 2004", 9 Dec 2004 - Q: If I Egg Shosuro, can the Egg use her first react or is it considered an entering play effect?
A: Strangely enough, you can actually do it. Egg says, "After entering play, this card becomes a copy of that Personality's ..." and Shosuro says, "After Shosuro enters play or overlays:"
The Egg is pretty odd, but seeing as they have identical timing, it should be perfectly valid to resolve the Egg's "after entering play" effect before taking the opportunity to play any "after entering play" Reactions, unless I've overlooked something. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 November 2004", 14 Nov 2004 - Q: Does Shosuro's first ability discard Regions and Fortifications as well?
A: No. Shosuro discards cards "from" the province. That will only get rid of cards held - in - the Province. Regions and Fortifications are attached to the Province, not kept in it. Martin Lund, "Rules for 9 November 2004", 14 Nov 2004 - Q: If you use Suitengu's surge on Shosuro exp.7, when she returns to the game, does her entering play ability go off?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro", 17 Mar 2005 - Q: Can Shosuro (Experienced 7 Thunder) overlay the Ninja Shapeshifter or Shosuro (Experienced Ninja Shapeshifter)?
A: Archive, General, Experienced - even lists that example. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "overlaing thunders and actions", 21 Feb 2005
