Rules Q&A
- Q: I know if Shosuro Adeiko is bowed she cannot used her ability. However, if she herself dies, is she still considered "bowed" while in the discard, or is she able to then react to her own death?
A: Cards in the discard pile are neither bowed nor unbowed. Shosuro Adeiko may react to her own death if her death results in her being in the discard pile. Dan Jacobson, "Shosuro Adeiko and bowed death", 27 Jan 2009 - Q: I kill another player's personality with a Hired Killer, reacting with a copy of Determination to its anouncement. The other player also has a copy of Shosuro Adeiko in play. According the pre-errata text of her reaction, can she react to it after the Hired Killer is resolved?
A: Yes. The Personality hits the discard pile. Further, whether or not its in the game does not change that a card was, in fact, destroyed. Zen Faulkes, "Determination vs. old Adeiko", 24 Mar 2008 - Q: You said that Shosuro Adeiko can react while dead, this mean if she is dead and he trigger goes off she can use her ability.
Because of this ruling you are saying that if I have dead Shosuro Adeiko who has not used her ability yet this turn and her trigger gets activated. (a personality i control dies for any reason[pre errata]) She can hand out her effect. (-3f/-1c + -1c if dishonored)?
Can personality use their abilities from the gravyard if all other restrictions are met? for example most reactions and any person with the text "even if [this card] is not at the current battle"
So do personalities need to be dead or can they just be discarded?
Houhou says "If Houhou is honorably dead: " that is a additional restriction that doesnt say you can do a action if you are dead does it?
Is there a rule that prevents a personality from taking a action from the gravyard? (i had previously been going on common sense to say no but this areas to directly contradict that)
A: The standard rule is that you can only use the abilities of a card if you control that card.
Use of abilities on cards that are out of play need explicit exceptions to let you use them while out of play. Phrases like "Even if [cardname] is dead / in your discard pile," are the most common example. The other common example is when a card has a Reaction with a timing trigger that comes after the card has left play, such as "After [cardname] is destroyed."
Adeiko is an example of a card with the latter type of exception. She has a Reaction that states you can use it after she is destroyed. You can use it after she is destroyed even though she is now in the Discard Pile. You can not use it in Reaction to any other Personality being destroyed if you do not control her. Martin Lund, "even if is dead? questions", 18 Mar 2008 - Q: 1. Can Adeiko react off of mountains of the pheonix resolution? Or is it considered to be a delayed effect?
A: Mountains of the Phoenix says, "Mountain Terrain Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, the Attacker and the Defender each choose a unit in their own army; the active player decides who chooses first. Then, destroy the chosen units."
It is played and resolved as a Battle Action during the Combat Segment. The choose-and-destroy effects are applied at a later time "before this battle's resolution" as per the card text. That's a classic example of a Delayed Effect. Shosuro Adeiko can't respond to that destruction.
(Heck, before we got rid of the keyword Mountains of the Phoenix was labeled as a "Delayed Terrain," for a reason. Now we just have one type of Terrain, where sometimes the effects are explicitly delayed.) Martin Lund, "Shosuro Adeiko", 22 Jan 2008 - Q: 2. Can adeiko react when I use soul jar to bring in a 1 chi dead personality because it is not a delayed effect when they die of the chi loss?
A: Yes, as per the Comprehensive Rules on the source of effects.
In particular, these passages address the issue:
"EXCEPTION 2: A Personality’s destruction for having 0 Chi comes from the effect that last gave the Personality a Chi penalty, or from the rulebook if there was no such effect."
and
"Effects of tokens come from the effect that created them, or from the effect that last transferred them if they have been transferred, not from the tokens themselves."
So the Chi Penalty of the token is one of Soul Jar's effects, and any destruction that causes due to 0 Chi is also an effect of Soul Jar. If you bring a 1F Personality into play with a -1C token then Soul Jar killed him as part of the Limited Action resolving. Adeiko can take her Reaction after the Limited Action is done resolving. Martin Lund, "Shosuro Adeiko", 22 Jan 2008 - Q: So Shosuro Adeiko can use her ability even if she is dead?
A: You can only use Adeiko's Reaction "from beyond the grave" if she's Reacting to the Action that just destroyed her. That's why her card says, "after ... destroys Adeiko or one of your other personalities:" rather than, "after ... destroys one of your personalities, even if Adeiko is dead:"
The only situation where Adeiko's card text explicitly breaks the rule that you can not use the abilities of cards you do not control is when Adeiko responds to herself getting killed. Martin Lund, "Shosuro Adeiko and bowed/destroyed again.", 30 Nov 2007 - Q: If (Shosuro) Adeiko is bowed does her reaction work if she is destroyed?
A: The reaction occurs after destruction (card text) and Adeiko is in the discard pile.
http://rules.l5r.com/Physically_marked_ ... nd_unbowed: "Only cards in play can bow, straighten, or be bowed."
Because the card is not bowed, nothing prevents the ability from being used. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Adeiko bowed/destroyed", 29 Nov 2007 - Q: One of my personalities loses a duel and is about to be destroyed as a result. I've got an Assigning Blame in my hand, and a Shosuro Adeiko and a Shosuro Jimen (non-xp) in play. I want to react to the destruction and to the end of the duel with those three cards.
As stated in the comprehensive rules, personalities are destroyed at step I. Duel ends after step J is complete. What will be the right timing window for each?
First either Assigning Blame or Adeiko (step I), then Jimen (after step J)? Or Assigning Blame (step I), and either Jimen or Adeiko (after step J)? Or any other that I fail to see.
Relevant texts:
Shosuro Adeiko reads: Scorpion Clan • Samurai • Magistrate Adeiko has +2F while opposing a Personality with lower Personal Honor. Reaction: After the effects resolve of a battle resolution, action, or trait that destroyed Adeiko or one of your other Personalities: Give a target Personality a -3F/-1C token, and an additional -1C token if he is dishonorable.
Shosuro Jimen reads: Scorpion Clan • Courtier • Unique • Poison Master Open: Target a Personality. After any action he performs this turn resolves, bow him. Political Reaction: After a battle or duel ends: Dishonor a target Personality who opposed one of your Personalities in the battle or duel.
Assigning Blame reads: Political Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed, if you control a Courtier: Dishonor a target Personality. His controller loses 3 Honor; this loss can be negated but not reduced.
A: Share the Blame is played after the destruction effect is applied as the result of a duel. (Step I)
Jimen's ability is played after the duel ends. (Step J)
Adeiko's ability is played after the Action that created the duel is considered to have all its (non-Delayed) effects resolved. (Way after the Dueling sequence ends) Martin Lund, "Shosuro Adeiko during a duel", 19 Nov 2007 - Q: Hi !
In a situation where Shosuro Adeiko has put a -3/-1 token on one of my personnalities, I'd like to know what happens in those cases:
- I attach Iron Testubo (the force penalty is negated) to the personnality. I then transfer the Iron Tetsubo to another of my personnalities. What happens to the force penalty ? Has it been negated for ever or only while the Iron Tetsubo is attached ?
A: Only while the Iron Tetsubo is attached. That Token creates a Continuous Effect. Once one Continuous Effect negating another Continuous Effect ends, the previously suppressed Continuous Effect reasserts itself. Martin Lund, "Force penalty tokens", 2 Nov 2007 - Q: Determination reads:
Dark Virtue Reaction: Before you announce an action, target one of your Samurai: The action can not have its effects negated or have its targeting changed. After the action destroys any Personality, remove him from the game.
Shosuro Adeiko reads:
Reaction: After the effects resolve of a battle resolution, action, or trait that destroyed Adeiko or one of your other Personalities: Give a target Personality a -3F/-1C token, and an additional -1C token if he is dishonorable.
If I destroy Adeiko with an action that was anounced after Determination, can she react, or is she already removed from the game at the point she would be able to?
Thanks!
(You surely are already hating how that girly turned out, aren't you?)
A: She's been removed from the game before her Reaction can be played. You can't use anything on her card unless there is text that says you can use it even while she is not in the game. (I sincerely hope to never see such card text.) Martin Lund, "Determination vs Shosuro Adeiko", 18 Oct 2007 - Q: Hi! My question obviously wasn't clear in my last relevant post, so I'll try to be more specific:
if in the rules glossary (Samurai Edition) it is said: "An action ... stops resolving when the last effect (apart from delayed effects) has been applied" and Shosuro Adeiko says:"After the effects resolve of a battle resolution, action or trait...." isn't the logical interpretation of the rules as applied to the specific card text that her reaction would trigger after the delayed effects (which are still effects of the action in question, as the card text requires) resolve?
And isn't the ruling that says otherwise against the rules?
Thank you for your patience and for your time.
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Delayed_effects: "(D)elayed effects are still said to “resolve” when they are first activated, but are actually applied at a future time."

This has been answered several times, and the ruling is unlikely to change.

A: http://rules.l5r.com/Physically_marked_ ... nd_unbowed: "Only cards in play can bow, straighten, or be bowed." Not in play, thus, not bowed, thus, nothing preventing use of ability.
Yes.
Not doing Obsidian Dragon questions now, as just how it works it under discussion in the Rules Junta. Zen Faulkes, "2 questions", 6 Sep 2007 - Q: My opponent has an 11 force unit attacking one of my provinces (7 province strength), and I'm defending with Shosuro Adeiko (3 force). We both pass. Since the first thing that happens during resolution is the losing army is destroyed, can I react with Adeiko's ability, give a -3/-1 token to the 11 force unit, and stop him from taking the province?
A: See http://rules.l5r.com/Battles?rulesl5_wi ... on_Segment
You're talking about step B. Army totals were figured in Step A. You never go back and recalculate.
No. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Adeiko", 25 Aug 2007 - Q: Can Shosuro Adeiko use her react if she is destroyed while bowed?
A: Yes. The Reaction is after destruction, when she is not bowed. Rules, Card states, Bowing: "Only cards in play can bow, straighten, or be bowed." Zen Faulkes, "Bowed Shosuro Adeiko", 14 Jul 2007
