Rules Q&A
- Q: Heres one...
Akodo Rokoru
Reaction : once per turn before one of your lion personalities bows due to another player's card effect, negate the bowing.
Shosuro Aroru
Scorpion Clan Duelist Ninja Soul of Bayushi Yokuan Followers Aroru attaches must be Ninja. A Personality must bow to refuse a challenge from Aroru. Players can take no Reactions to a challenge, refusal, or duel involving Aroru except Reactions that cancel the challenge or duel or occur after the duel.
If I target a lion players lion personality with IA Challenge while Rokuro is in play, will he be able to negate the bowing.
I ask because it looks to me like Aroru adds a cost to refusing the duel, can you still negate that cost and even if you could negate the bowing, can you in this instance with the rest of Aroru's text being no reactions?
A: Aroru does indeed add a cost to refusing a challenge, so Rokuro's Reaction is prohibited. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for June 19, 2003", 19 Jun 2003 - Q: OK, here's the situation. My opponent has Shosuro Aroru (5 chi) and I have a 3 chi peep with Monkey Magistrates. Aroru issues an Iaijutsu Challenge to my peep with the Monkey. Can I use the Monkey's reaction?
A: Iaijutsu Challenge is another player's action, and it targets your Personality. Yes, you can use the Magistrates. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 March 2003", 18 Mar 2003 - Q: 3) Shosuro Aroru, has a trait like this: "A Personality must bow to refuse a challenge from Aroru." Does that mean if Aroru challenges a bowed person, the person cannot refuse? (since he can’t bow again).
A: Correct. The Aroru is worded so that the bowing is a cost of refusal. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 December 2002", 13 Dec 2002 - Q: Wondering something here...
Why can't Shosuro Aroru use poisoned weapon? Couldn't PW be errated for her? Seems rather silly that a Ninja Dualist can't poison a blade...
I'm just curious at the reasoning behind this....
A: Sometimes, the mechanics of a card are just the mechanics of a card. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 April 2002", 24 Apr 2002 - Q: HI!!!!
If for some reason I have Shosuro Aroru exp 2 and two other personalities bowed at a battle and I use my own Creating Order on Shosuro Aroru and one of the two bowed people. Can I react with Aroru's abilities to redirect his straightening (even though he isn't bowed) to the second bowed personality and move Shosuro Aroru?

Creating Order: imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=1557,#hashid=e6892a72e12e896035e57805c49ac495,#cardcount=0
Thank you!
A: Yes.
Aroru reacts to the targeting of an action, and nothing on Creating Order says it can only target bowed Personalities. So you may target Aroru, activate his reaction, redirect the straightening to your other bowed personality, and then move Aroru.
EDIT: Replaced "ninja" with the more accurate "personality". Jon Palmer, "Shosuro Aroru exp2 and Creating Order", 15 Mar 2013 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=93307
A follow-up question: When does the inability to react start?
Given that it's an effect of the action, doesn't it technically not start until the Resolution? Which would mean that you could change the target, interfere with costs, use Only Actions Speak, etc.
A: The inability to React is the first effect of the action, so it technically begins after that first effect is applied. Currently, Howard, this will allow all the examples you list of Reactions that CAN be taken.
However it should be noted that, come EE, Ranged Attack targeting will occur during effects, not during required targeting, which will greatly increase the number of Reactions prohibited by this effect. Brook Cunningham, "Shosuro Aroru", 9 Aug 2011 - Q: When does the action "end"?
A: An action ends after its resolution, as noted in this sequence of steps A through E. Brook Cunningham, "Shosuro Aroru", 8 Aug 2011 - Q: (I)f I target Shosuro Aroru Exp. with a Hired Killer and he redirect it to one of my Personalities must I pay the costs and kill my personality or I can avoid that?
A: Point: There is no such thing as "redirection" in Samurai Edition rules.
The Experienced Shosuro Aroru's Reaction is "when" targeting occurs. Hired Killer's cost is set after targeting occurs (http://rules.l5r.com/Rulings_H#Hired_Killer).
The cost did not change, and you must pay it.
