Rules Q&A
- Q: When someone uses a Battle action from an item or follower, what would be some cards that would be good to redirect it without cancelling it? I saw a few that would redirect it from personalities specifically, but are there any that just redirect in general? Would Shosuro Gardens be able to do this or not due to it not being by the strict definition of an action card?
A: "Action card" has a rather strict definition, yes, and it means what it says. Shosuru Gardens can't redirect things like Spearmen ranged attacks. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 March 2002", 8 Mar 2002 - Q: Here's a couple of questions I had over the last week or so of playing:
1) My Scorp is in a duel and I'm playing Shosuro Gardens. My opponent plays a Poisoned Weapon. Can I redirect it to another personality using the Gardens?
A: No. Poisoned Weapon does not target the Personality. [Gold Edition printing] You cannot redirect untargeted actions. [rulebook] Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 January 2002", 18 Jan 2002 - Q: Can you use the Shosuro Gardens to redirect an Action to one of your bowed personalitys.
A: Yes. When redirecting, you are bound only by the action's originator's targeting requirements. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 January 2002", 16 Jan 2002 - Q: Can I use the Shosuro Gardens abilty to redirect an action to one of my bowed personalitys???
A: If it could have originally been aimed there by the action's original player, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 January 2002", 16 Jan 2002 - Q: Also, are the Shosuro Gardens only allowed to target legal targets, or when someone targets my attacking samurai with Refugees, can I redirect it to another samurai at home?
As long as they're unbowed yes.
A: Sorry, no. When redirecting an action, you are bound by, and ONLY by, the action's original targeting requirements (plus the redirecting action's own restrictions, of course). Shosuro Gardens can redirect a Refugees to any of your own Personalities, bowed or unbowed, in the current battle who have no Followers. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 December 2001", 19 Dec 2001 - Q: Also, are the Shosuro Gardens only allowed to target legal targets, or when someone targets my attacking samurai with Refugees, can I redirect it to another samurai at home?
A: All redirection effects are bound to other legal targets. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 December 2001", 17 Dec 2001 - Q: 1) If I'm bringing to play a personality of my clan and another faction, but had choosed that another faction with the event Alliance, does the eprsonality costs 2 less gold? I mean: if I'm a Scorpion player and choose the clan "Ninja", does my Bayushi Yokuan will cost 6 gold? Did you understand it?
A: If you choose Ninja for Alliance, all your Ninja Personalities cost you 2g less when you buy them. That's cumulative with any other reduction, so Yokuan will cost you 6g at full price or 4g with the in-Clan discount. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 November 2001", 10 Nov 2001 - Q: 3) May I use Shosuro Gardens to redirect any action to or from Abresax? Does it target him?
A: When redirecting an action, you are bound only by the action's own targeting restrictions. If the action could have been targeted at Abresax originally, Shosuro Gardens may redirect it there, despite the fact that the Gardens' Reaction is Political. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 November 2001", 10 Nov 2001 - Q: My opponent targets one of my peps. I use shosuro gardens to redirect the action to Shosuro Furuyari (Scorpion Clan Villain * Samurai * Unique Reaction: When an Action card targets Furuyari, discard a card from your hand with a Focus value greater than or equal to the Action's, to cancel the action.) Is the action cancel?
A: You can use Furuyari's reaction to cancel it, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 November 2001", 9 Nov 2001 - Q: Well, I guess I could keep arguing, but I recall you're one of the rules gurus who decides these things...so wasted breath, no? That said, then, I would assume that Kolat Assassin is in the same league; it can't legally target someone with chi of 5 or more?
If the chi is now a targeting requirement, and not part of the action in that it is only a targeting restriction.,
A: You lost me. "Now a targeting requirement, not just a targeting restriction"? What's the difference? Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 October 2001", 30 Oct 2001 - Q: Just a quick clarification cause I wasnt sure on how the discussion settled. When you use Shosuro Gardens, only the first target must be legal?
A: The new target must be a legal one for the original action. That's straight from the rulebook. The ruling is that "legal" is determined only from the point of view of the action's original player, and that your choice of a new target is not bound by your own targeting restrictions (unless, of course, you are also the original player). It's not a new ruling, either...more like three and a half years old. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 October 2001", 24 Oct 2001 - Q: I need to know if the ability of Shosuro Gardens does target my personalities. I mean ... if I attack with a Bayushi Paneki with thousands of followers and a Soshi Jujun, so I use the ability of Jujun (bowing him) and my opponent play a BSL in Paneki, may I redirect the BSL to my bowed Jujun?
A: Yes. When redirecting an action, you are bound only by the action's original targeting requirements. You do not impose your own restrictions on the new choice as well. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 October 2001", 17 Oct 2001 - Q: Just one more thing about Shosuro Gardens: may it redirect the actions of a Come One at a Time? Is it considered an action card? And does it target?
A: Come One At a Time is an Action card but it does not do the targeting itself. It gives all players actions which they can perform. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 October 2001", 17 Oct 2001 - Q: Finally, with the new wording on He's Mine!, can you challenge someone to an Iaijutsu Art, then He's Mine1 in a much higher chi Samurai?
Yes.
I hate to 'tag-team' you like this, Jeff, but why is this allowed and the Shosuro Gardens cannot perform a similar move?
A: Because Shosuro Gardens is a retargeting effect and He's Mine! isn't. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 October 2001", 9 Oct 2001 - Q: Here's a Question, My Kwanchai duels someone with 2 chi(or higher) with = Iaijutsu Art, can Shosruo Gardens letm e retarget who my dueler is, = reguardless of Chi? Say to a personality with a Sword? =20
A: When changing targets, the new targets have to be legal ones as well. This is a general rule on retargeting. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 6 September", 11 Sep 2001
