Rulings
- When triggering Jimen's Reaction after a battle ends, a Personality qualifies as having "opposed one of your Personalities in the battle" if he opposed one during the battle while at THAT battle's battlefield. [Clarification, BC, 6 March 2009] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 156
Rules Q&A
- Q: To clarify for my understanding, in this topic, MacBeth states:
"Yes. But the trigger for his Reaction will be the ending of his or Kaukatsu's battle, not the first battle."
A: Well, upon closer inspection, I messed that question up on my first try. Nobody's perfect; see above.
But I believe I can answer your questions without directly taking the previous one into account... Brook Cunningham, "Shosuro Jimen(non exp) trigger to opposed", 6 Mar 2009 - Q: 1) Does this mean that units assigned to a battlefield (with an opposing army) aren't considered to be opposing that army until the battle at that province is resolved?
A: No. As soon as the units are at a battlefield, this definition applies.
Your second question was "if Yes" to the first, so I hope this clears up both. Brook Cunningham, "Shosuro Jimen(non exp) trigger to opposed", 6 Mar 2009 - Q: I have Shosuro Jimen in play. My opponent declares an attack on my last 3 provinces with one personality per province. Having only Jimen and Bayushi Kaukatsu in play, I defend only 2 provinces. My opponent resolves the undefended province and used Rapid Deployment(or any action that would move the personalities out) and moves the other 2 personalities to his location and ,thus, successfully destroying the province.
Can Shosuro Jimen dishonor one of the personality that moved to the undefended province?
A: No.
After the first battle, those Personalities did not oppose your Personalities "in the battle", so there is no trigger for Jimen after it resolves.
After Jimen and Kaukatsu's battles, though the Personalities opposed them at some time between Maneuvers and their leaving during the first battle, they never opposed them IN THOSE BATTLES (which start when the attacker chooses to resolve them, after he resolved the first), so there is no legal trigger for Jimen then either.
EDIT: This ruling is (Fixed) from how it first appeared. Brook Cunningham, "Shosuro Jimen(non exp) trigger to opposed", 6 Mar 2009 - Q: (A) personality who has an attachment and who was in a battle in which Circle of Steel was played as an action. My opponent has Shosuro Jimen at home and would like to use his Reaction to dishonor my personality after the battle. Is it legal for him to play this Reaction?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Jimen and Circle of Steel", 5 Feb 2008 - Q: One of my personalities loses a duel and is about to be destroyed as a result. I've got an Assigning Blame in my hand, and a Shosuro Adeiko and a Shosuro Jimen (non-xp) in play. I want to react to the destruction and to the end of the duel with those three cards.
As stated in the comprehensive rules, personalities are destroyed at step I. Duel ends after step J is complete. What will be the right timing window for each?
First either Assigning Blame or Adeiko (step I), then Jimen (after step J)? Or Assigning Blame (step I), and either Jimen or Adeiko (after step J)? Or any other that I fail to see.
Relevant texts:
Shosuro Adeiko reads: Scorpion Clan • Samurai • Magistrate Adeiko has +2F while opposing a Personality with lower Personal Honor. Reaction: After the effects resolve of a battle resolution, action, or trait that destroyed Adeiko or one of your other Personalities: Give a target Personality a -3F/-1C token, and an additional -1C token if he is dishonorable.
Shosuro Jimen reads: Scorpion Clan • Courtier • Unique • Poison Master Open: Target a Personality. After any action he performs this turn resolves, bow him. Political Reaction: After a battle or duel ends: Dishonor a target Personality who opposed one of your Personalities in the battle or duel.
Assigning Blame reads: Political Reaction: After one of your Personalities is destroyed, if you control a Courtier: Dishonor a target Personality. His controller loses 3 Honor; this loss can be negated but not reduced.
A: Share the Blame is played after the destruction effect is applied as the result of a duel. (Step I)
Jimen's ability is played after the duel ends. (Step J)
Adeiko's ability is played after the Action that created the duel is considered to have all its (non-Delayed) effects resolved. (Way after the Dueling sequence ends) Martin Lund, "Shosuro Adeiko during a duel", 19 Nov 2007 - Q: Shosuro Jimen: Is this meant to trigger off only the next action his target performs or does the effect last for the rest of the turn.
A: Rules, Glossary, Any: "One or more." (Emphasis added.) Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Jimen and Length of Effects", 18 Jul 2007 - Q: Shosuro Jimen: After a duel involving a personality I control, and a personality controlled by another player. My personality wins, resulting in the destruction of the personality. Can I dishonor him as he is on his way to the discard pile? Or dishonor the personality in the discard pile?
A: The Personality isn't on the way, it's already dead if the duel kills.
Comprehensive Rules, Effects in and out of play: "Effects only apply to cards that are either in play, or in a temporary focusing, entering-play, or resolution area, unless: they specify an out of play area, are triggered by a card entering an out of play area (such as, being destroyed or discarded from the hand), or use wording such as “all Samurai in and out of play”."
Shosuro Jimen's text doesn't hit any of those categories. No. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Jimen", 26 Jun 2007 - Q: Does (Shosuro ) Jimen's open ability trigger once, or everytime the requirement 'Action he performs resolves' is met?
A: "Any" (card text), as in all, as in every time. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Jimen", 14 Jun 2007
