Rules Q&A
- Q: I need a ruling concerning Action Card "Taut Bowstrings" and some personalities.
Taut Bowstrings (WoC) "Reaction: Play before one of your target Followers or Items bows to produce a ranged attack or as part of a combined ranged attack. That card need not bow. Reaction: Play after a unit moves into a Province or before a unit leaves a Province to make a ranged attack targeting it from your opposing cards in that Province. Your cards need not bow to produce this attack."
Now, usually RAs are Battle actions, but sometimes they are Reactions. Moto Latomu has such ability, Moto Latomu exp gives it to others, and Shosuro Tsuyoshi has one compared against Chi. My question is, can I use second ability of TB with such RAs? I would say yes, basing on RAs description on page 90 in rulebook, but I'm not sure.
A: The only snag I see in that under page 90 of the Rulebook, it says that for Combined Ranged Attacks: "must all be the same type, and the cards must all be able to make a ranged attack at that time and at the intended target."
Taut bowstrings gets around the "at the same time" part by letting everyone shoot out of turn, but not the "same type" part. You'd need all "Reaction" RAs or all "Battle" RAs, but you could not make a combined RA of "Reaction" ability Ranged Attacks and "Battle" ability Ranged Attacks. Also, keep an eye out on your targets, since many Reaction Ranged Attacks target something that has to do with their Trigger, and their Trigger may not be met when Taut Bowstrings lets them shoot out-of-turn.
Comparing against Chi isn't a problem. The Combined Ranged Attack picks up all such special properties from its individual parts. If you combine a Chi comparison RA with a regular RA, the Combined Ranged Attack is compared against Chi. Martin Lund, "Rules for 4 January 2005", 8 Jan 2005 - Q: Reaction: After an action taken by another player targets Tsuyoshi: Ranged 3 attack that is compared against the target's Chi.
Can this reaction target only an action that has a Personality as the source of the player's action, such as an Iajutsu Challenge? Or can Tsuyoshi pick a target of my choice (I control Tsuyoshi) in response to a Kolat Assasin, Shame, Block Supply Lines, etc?
A: He can shoot any legal target.
You'll have a hard time finding a legal target for a Ranged Attack outside of a Battle though - since you'll lack any cards "opposing" Tsuyoshi, which are the only cards that are legal targets for a Ranged Attack from Tsuyoshi. (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 90, "Making Ranged Attacks") Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 December 2004", 9 Dec 2004 - Q: a) if I play Bayushi Jou's reaction against a Shadowlands Horde or Dark Path of Shadow player, can they elect to "lose 2 honor" only to have their stronghold/"faction" negate the loss, or are the effects of the action reacted to with Jou negated unconditionally?
b) Shosuro Tsuyoshi's text is a bit confusing. RA3 compared against Chi... does this kill any and all followers, who have a Chi of 0 (even those like Kenku Duelist, who have a Chi *modifier*)? Also, I presume the normal restrictions on a RA still apply (i.e., effectively Shosuro Tsuyoshi must be in a battle at the current battlefield to satisfy legality as well as relevance)?
Jou -> Political Reaction: After another player's Battle action targets Jou: The player may choose to lose 2 Honor. If he did not choose this, negate the action's (remaining) effects.
Tsuyoshi -> Reaction: After an action taken by another player targets Tsuyoshi: Ranged 3 Attack that is compared against the target's Chi.
A: a) Yes, a Ninja or Shadowlands Horde player can "choose" the Honor loss, snicker as his Stronghold makes it never happen, then since Jou's conditional effect is based upon what he chose (not what actually happened), she doesn't negate anything.
b) First, Tsuyoshi's Ranged Attack will indeed kill most Followers, because when checking a non-existant stat, it is considered 0. However, when checking a stat on an attachment that gives a stat bonus, the value of the bonus is considered to be the value of the stat. So a "+4C" Follower, if one existed, would survive.
And while normal targeting restrictions of Ranged Attacks apply, you are mostly incorrect about what those restrictions ARE, in relation to Tsuyoshi. Ranged Attacks may only target "a Follower or a Personality without Followers in the current enemy army" (see here). However, Reactions are not restricted by the Rules of Presence and Location (there is no more Rule of Relevance), so there is no requirement for Tsuyoshi to be at the current battlefield when he performs the Ranged Attack. Brook Cunningham, "Bayushi Jou vs. Shadowlands Horde, Shosuro Tsuyoshi", 22 Mar 2012 - Q: wen some one target him limited can eh react ? o just in batle??
A: See Archive entry on Shosuro Tsuyoshi. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Tsuyoshi!!!!", 30 Mar 2005 - Q: This action can target Followers (and consequently destroys almost any Follower). If a Follower has a +X chi bonus which it grants to the Personality attached, the ranged attack's strength must equal or exceed the bonus to destroy the Follower.
A: Yes. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Tsuyoshi v.s. Followers", 14 Mar 2005 - Q: Does he have to be in a battle to use his reaction?
A: Yes. His ability must follow all normal Ranged Attack rules. [Marty Lund, 5 December 2004] Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Tsuyoshi", 9 Mar 2005 - Q: Even if he is in a battle can he shoot someone that is at my opponent's home if he is targeted by one of my opponents actions?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Tsuyoshi", 9 Mar 2005 - Q: Can I shoot followers even if they don't have chi or do I shoot the personality directly?
A: Followers have a Chi stat, written in the upper right corner. It's usually zero. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Tsuyoshi", 9 Mar 2005 - Q: What happens if he is targeted with a limited action during the action phase. That would trigger his reaction and since reactions act outside the normal timing rules can he then perform his ranged attack?
A: No. There will be no legal target. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Tsuyoshi", 9 Mar 2005 - Q: What happens if I am playing Tangen Sensei and I use Tangen Sensei ability to redirect an action to him, does that trigger the reaction to shoot someone or does that could as me targeting him as I am the one who used Tangen Sensei's ability.
A: Depends on whether you redirect your action (not a valid trigger) or an opponent's action (valid trigger). Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Tsuyoshi", 9 Mar 2005 - Q: (D)oes the ranged attack have to target the personality that targets him(?)
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Tsuyoshi", 9 Mar 2005 - Q: Return for training-does this target him or not?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Shosuro Tsuyoshi", 9 Mar 2005
