Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Show Me Your Stance 0G 1FV Iaijutsu Battle: One of your Human Personalities issues an unrefusable challenge to an opposing Human Personality to a duel of Personal Honor. The winner gains 2 Honor. Dishonor the loser and send him home bowed." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 33
Rules Q&A
- Q: How many PH this personality card has? I want to know because of "To Do What We Must", "Show Me Your Stance" , innate duel of PH from Kurorito etc.
A: If the stat is not defined when the card is created, the value defaults to 0. Martin Lund, "Rules for 2 June 2004", 6 Jun 2004 - Q: Presumably, this means that ToC can react to the loss of a Show Me Your Stance duel.
A: It can, but the honor gain to the winner and the dishonoring of the loser still occur because those happen before AToC's trigger, and canceling an action which has already produced some effects does not retroactively undo those effects. [AOF rulebook p. 45] Jeff Alexander, "post for 31 January 2002", 1 Feb 2002 - Q: Show Me Your Stance: "Iaijutsu Battle: Your target unbowed Human Personality challenges a target enemy Human Personality to a duel of Personal Honor. The winner gains 2 Honor. Dishonor the loser. Move him home. Bow him as he moves."
Hi guys, as a returning L5R player, I was recently corrected on a new(?) ruling concerning dueling. I am under the impression that focused cards add to the stat that is relevant to the duel. Due to the fact that dishonored personalities cannot have a personal honor higher than zero, their duel stat for Show Me Your Stance remains zero no matter how many cards focused (or other modification). I cannot find the rules that contradicts this in the rules forum or rulebook. Can someone direct me to the right place or give me a rundown on how focused cards work with dueling? Thanks in advance!
A: That is indeed how duels used to work. However, the rule now is that you total the focus values and add the duel stats. So, a dishonourable Personality does not now auto-lose a duel of Personal Honour.
(This also means that if you play Poisoned Weapon in a duel against a Personality with 3 or less chi, they'll die immediately, rather than after the chi bonus they used to get from focussing goes away.) Alex Jones, "Show Me Your Stance & Dishonored Personalities", 18 May 2015 - Q: Hi, so this came up in a game and I wanted to make sure I got this correct.
Hakuseki Sensei: Your Stronghold has no abilities. Your Magistrates have +1F while opposing any dishonorable Personalities. After each time your Battle action bows or destroys a dishonorable Personality, gain 1 Honor.
Show Me Your Stance: Iaijutsu Battle: Your target unbowed Human Personality challenges a target enemy Human Personality to a duel of Personal Honor. The winner gains 2 Honor. Dishonor the loser. Move him home. Bow him as he moves.
So let's say I duel an honorable personality... do I gain 1 from the sensei? Yes or No? I would think I do as I dishonor them before they bow.
Thanks!
A: You are correct, he dishonors before he bows, so you gain the 1 honor. Jon Palmer, "Hakuseki Sensei and Dishonor+Bow actions", 27 Feb 2015 - Q: Question. What happens in a duel started by show me your stance against a dishonored personality. The rulebook says they have a maximum personal honor if 0 and focusing (I thought) adds to the stat used in the duel
A: Depends on what Rulebook you're talking about, too. It used to be that Focusing were direct, temporary bonuses to the Stat itself, so a dishonorable Personality could never get above 0 in a duel of Personal Honor. I don't remember exactly when that changed, but now in current Rules, and Legacy/Open formats (and I think for the majority of the game anyway), Focuses in dueling are instead just added to the duel stat and the total number determines the winner, but they aren't direct stat bonuses anymore.
