Rules Q&A
- Q: I hope that this kind of ruling will be resolved with the templating changes. You are using two very similarly worded cards (minus the search part) to do the exact same thing, only one is targeted one is not. It's like having your cake and eating it too. Shrine should be targetted if Mura is targetted, Mura should be search if Shrine is search, there is no fundamental difference in the way the cards work minus 1 word difference, which I assume was simply because it was "intent".
A: Shrine of Fu Leng is an anomaly. There is no good reason for it to use the term "search" in regards to the discard pile, and it was not used intentionally. However, it WAS used, and because it was used, different rules apply to it and it doesn't function the way similar cards that don't use that term function. That is the way it is going to stay, because although it is dissimilar, there is still a definitive way in which it works, and there are no power level issues with that working. Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 October 2004", 25 Oct 2004 - Q: You pay costs then resolve effects correct?
If so then I have a question on Shrine of Fu-Leng which reads:
Unique. Shadowlands Limited: Bow Shrine of Fu Leng and destroy one of your Personalities to search your Dynasty discard pile for a destroyed Oni Personality and put it into play without Gold cost.
Since you pay costs first, can I destroy an oni personality and then search my discard pile to find that oni I just destroyed and put it in play?
A: 'An Action targets something if it uses the work "target" or if any player sometimes has to choose what it affects.' (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 72)
If you have more than 1 Oni in your Dynasty discard pile, you have to choose what Shrine of Fu Leng affects. Ergo, Shrine of Fu Leng targets the Oni it brings back.
'You must choose all targets when you announce an action, before you being paying any costs.' (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 73)
So you have to target an Oni Personality to bring back in your Dynasty discard pile - before - paying the cost of Shrine of Fu Leng.
Shrine of Fu Leng is confusing because it says, "to search your Dynasty discard pile," which is just plain incorrect templating.
Note that cards in DECKS (and only cards in decks - not in Discard Piles, Hands, Provinces, or anywhere else) are NOT considered to be targeted by Actions that say to Search the Deck for a card. (Accumulated Rulings, "Targeting") Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 October 2004", 13 Oct 2004 - Q: "Limited: Bow Shrine of Fu Leng and destroy one of your Personalities to search your Dynasty discard pile for a destroyed Oni Personality and put it into play without Gold cost."
Can you return to play the personality you just destroyed (given said personality is an Oni)?
A: Jeff answered a related question in "[L5R-CCG] backlogged Reign of Blood answers": Martin Lund, "Rules for 16 April 2004", 16 Apr 2004 - Q: Can you search for the same oni that you destroyed to activate the Shrine of Fu Leng? Example: Destroy Chimamire no Oni and bow Shrine of Fu Leng, grab the same Chimamire no Oni and return him to play.
Effects that let you to search for a particular card (e.g., Walking the Way) do not target the card. [JA, email, 19 January 2001; 23 July 2001; ML, JA, email, 19 October 2004]
A: That should cover it. You don't target the Oni you bring back with the Shrine, only the one you destroy. You can restore the same oni you sacrificed. Martin Lund, "Shrine of Fu Leng", 27 Mar 2005
