Rules Q&A
- Q: These came up in a game last night.
1) He has Battle Maidens attached to a Keyo. The card reads "While this unit is Cavalry and attacking, Battle Maidens gain +1 force and you cannot target this unit with actions that would send it home." He said (and the judges agreed) that the +1 bonus applied to Keyo as well, because she has the trait "battle maiden", and because the follower's trait does not say "THIS CARD gains +1 force, it says "battle maidens." Are they correct?
A: No. That's self-referential text, and isn't worded specifically enough to give all Battle Maidens +1 Force. It only applies to the Follower, Battle Maidens. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for June 23rd, 2003", 23 Jun 2003 - Q: In a message dated 5/15/2002 5:01:14 PM Eastern Standard Time, writes:
Question about the Followe- Battle Maidens.
When Battle Maidens are attacking, does the +1 force apply to all Battle Maidens or just the follower itself?
In my area at least it applies to all. It just says Battle Maidens. It doesn't put any restrictions.
A: It's referring to itself by title, as do many other cards. When a card does that, it's only talking about itself. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 May 2002", 22 May 2002 - Q: Only the Battle Maidens
The follower yeah? So that means Battle Maidens are just a 6 gold for 2 force (that goes up to 3 force when attacking) cavalry follower with a disgracefully prohibitive honour requirement?
A: It's hardly prohibitive considering the title. Most Unicorn Personalities with that same trait will have no problem. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 May 2002", 17 May 2002 - Q: Follower Battle Maidens.
When it says "...and you can not target this unit with actions that would send it home."
Does that mean the unit's controller, or any player?
A: Just the unit's controller. You in the singular refers to the controller of the card. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 22 (Part One)", 22 Aug 2001 - Q: Plains of the Maiden After you destroy a province or army in battle resolution as the Attacker: Gain Honor equal to the number of your Battle Maidens at the current battlefield.
Shiotome Halls After a battle's resolution ends, if a province or enemy army was destroyed during it and you control a unit in the winning army: You may gain Honor equal to the number of Battle Maidens in that army.
As far as I know, Plains of the Maiden triggers once for destroying an army and again for the destroying the province.
Does Shiotome Halls (and by Extension, Tadaji Sensei) also trigger twice if you destroy both an army and province during the same resolution?
A: No.
Plains of the Maiden triggers off the effects "destroy an army" and "destroy a province". If you destroy both in one battle's resolution, the trait will trigger twice.
Shiotome Halls (and Tadaji Sensei), on the other hand, triggers at a step in the battle sequence, so it can only trigger once per battle. Alex Jones, "Plains of the Maiden versus Shiotome Halls", 30 Aug 2013 - Q: If I am playing Shiotome Halls and Tadajai Sensei, do the honor gains 'stack' when destroying a province or army?
The Shiotome Halls After a battle's resolution ends, if a province or enemy army was destroyed during it and you control a unit in the winning army: You may gain Honor equal to the number of Battle Maidens in that army.
Tadaji Sensei After a battle's resolution ends, if a province or enemy army was destroyed during it and you control a unit in the winning army: You may gain Honor equal to the number of Battle Maidens in that army.
For Example: I attack with 4 Battle Maidens, destroying one card at battle resolution and destroying the province as well.
Do I gain 4, 8, 12, 16 or some other number of honor? Thanks!
A: Each card provides a separate triggered effect, so they will "stack."
In the example you provided, you would gain 4 Honor from each effect, for a total of 8 Honor.
Edit for clarification: The Rulebook will also award you 2 Honor for destroying one card in Resolution, assuming of course none of your Battle Maidens are dishonored. Ben Higgins, "Legacy: Shiotome Halls and Tadaji Sensei", 30 Aug 2013 - Q: Relevant text:
The Perfect Moment: After the end of an Attack Phase in which you were the Defender: Create an additional Attack Phase with the previous phase's Attacker as the Defender. During this Attack Phase, you will not destroy more than one of the Defender's provinces and your Personalities may not assign and will not move unless they are Paragons or Battle Maidens.
Akodo Dairuko: Reaction: Even if Dairuko is bowed, before the resolution of a battle at her battlefield: Dairuko rallies her troops. That battle's resolution will not bow cards in your army.
Now if I Perfect Moment after an attack and use Dairuko's r at the end of the battle, am I able to TPM again and assign Dairuko again?
A: Indeed you may. Nothing prevents the interaction you describe. Brook Cunningham, "Perfect Moment and assigning twice", 4 Jul 2013 - Q: Plains of the Maiden: After you destroy a province or army in battle resolution as the Attacker: Gain Honor equal to the number of your Battle Maidens at the current battlefield.
Is the honor gained from the trait at resolution affected by strategies or events that, lets say, reduce or negate honor gains except for battle resolution?
A: Yes.
While the honor gains from Plains of the Maiden happen in the Resolution Segment they are not from the Resolution of the battle themselves.
Also, kudos on your crafty way to ask about On without mentioning it, thus sneaking around our restriction on questions from TSE. Ben Higgins, "Plains of the Maiden", 3 Jun 2012 - Q: If I use The Perfect Moment: May I assign to multiple provinces? May I choose which one I destroy, or does it have to be the first one I win? Can I still destroy the defending army even though the province will not be destroyed? I believe that you can assign to multiple provinces and you can destroy armies if they defend. But, I believe that you cannot choose which province is destroyed, it will be the first one you have enough force since the card does not give you a choice. Please correct me if I am wrong.
(The question is because of a player who wishes to use Plains of the Maiden and wants to gain extra honor.)
The Perfect Moment Reaction: After the end of an Attack Phase in which you were the Defender: Create an additional Attack Phase with the previous phase's Attacker as the Defender. During this Attack Phase, you will not destroy more than one of the Defender's provinces, and your Personalities may not assign and will not move unless they are Paragons or Battle Maidens.
A: 1. Yes 2. It must be the first one that meets the conditions for destruction 3. Yes Jon Palmer, "The Perfect Moment confusion", 2 Apr 2012 - Q: Does playing "The Perfect Moment" counts towards the entering play requirement of Ring of Void?
The Perfect Moment Reaction: After the end of an Attack Phase in which you were the Defender: Create an additional Attack Phase with the previous phase's Attacker as the Defender. During this Attack Phase, you will not destroy more than one of the Defender's provinces, and your Personalities may not assign and will not move unless they are Paragons or Battle Maidens.
Ring of the Void After you resolve your fourth or later non-Kiho action from Strategies in one phase: You may put this card into play from your hand.
A: The Perfect Moment is played after the end of an Attack Phase, but creates a new Attack Phase that it is not itself a part of. Therefore it will not "count" towards Ring of the Void's four-card requirement. Jon Palmer, "The Perfect Moment + Void", 19 Feb 2012 - Q: After you destroy a province or army in battle resolution as the Attacker: Gain Honor equal to the number of your Battle Maidens at the current battlefield.
1. Do I gain honor twice: for destroying an army and another time for destroying a province or just once?
2. Does the honor gain from this trait rehonor my dishonored personalities in battle resolution?
A: 1. *sigh*
2. No, because trait trait doesn't target and isn't performed by any of the Personalities. Your Stronghold's trait will give you honour regardless of whether your Battle Maidens are honourable or dishonourable. See Physically marked card states, Honorable and dishonorable. Alex Jones, "Plains of the Maiden - Twice in one battle resolution?", 14 Feb 2012 - Q: Given the definition of "winning" a battle, is it possible for me to gain honor from Tadaji Sensei with unopposed Battle Maidens in resolution even if I don't have the force to take the province?
A: Yes. Jon Palmer, "Tadaji Sensei", 2 Feb 2012 - Q: If i control 1 or more dishonored battle maidens during a battle resolution as the attacker, in which i destroyed an army during battle resolution, which honor gain will be negated to re-honor my personalities. the trait from the stronghold or the rulebook honor gain.
Also, if i instead only destroy a province in battle resolution will the trait from the stronghold re-honor my personalities as there are no other honor gains?
Or if i destroy both an army and a province?
Relevent Text
A: Plains of the Maiden actually will not rehonor anyone. Per the CR entry regarding rehonoring, "Before a player gains Honor from an action or trait that targeted, came from, or was performed by one or more of his or her dishonorable Personalities, if any of those Personalities is not otherwise rehonored by the action or trait, each Personality is rehonored and the player does not gain the Honor." Plains of the Maiden does not target, come from, or get performed by any Personalities, so the gain will always occur. If an army is being destroyed, that will rehonor the Personalities as normal. Jon Palmer, "Plains of the Maiden and Dishonored Battle Maidens", 18 Jan 2012 - Q: Scenario: I'm playing out of Shiotome Halls I attack my opponent and win an opposed battle at prov A w/ 4 Battle Maidens against his 3 personalities at resolution. I also have enough force to take the province. How much honor do i gain total at resolution w/ the stronghold's trait?
A. 4 + 6 = 10 (# of BM's for army and province destroyed + cards destroyed)
B. 4 + 4 + 6 = 14 (# of BM's for army destroyed + BM's for prov destroyed + cards destroyed)
C. None of the above
Shiotome Halls After each time an army containing a unit you control destroys an army and/or Province, you may gain Honor equal to the number of Battle Maidens in that army.
(I hope its not too obvious why I'm asking this question- wink, wink, nudge, nudge)
Thanks
A: "destroys an army and/or Province" is a single occurrence. In the scenario you listed, Shiotome Halls will give you 4 honor for the 4 Battle Maidens in your army, and you will gain 6 honor for destroying 3 cards in resolution for a total of 10 honor. Jon Palmer, "Shiotome Halls and honor gain", 4 Oct 2011 - Q: The card Shinjo Styla is speaking of is:
Tadaji Sensei
Unicorn Clan Sensei Personalities with a printed Personal Honor less
than 2 will not join you. After each time an army containing your units
wins a battle or destroys a Province (or both), you may gain Honor
equal to the number of Battle Maidens you control in that amy.
I believe the answer would be yes. A battle at your provence is still a battle, and your units at that battle are still considered to be in an army. It does not mention anything about having to be the attacker.
A: I knew what the card is. The answer is still no. The trigger for Honor gain is "winning a battle," which does not happen if all opposing units are removed before resolution. Zen Faulkes, "Re: Battle Maiden Honor Gains", 3 Mar 2005 - Q: [Legacy] Tadaji Sensei - If your battle maidens both destroy an enemy army and the province. I have 4 battle maidens. Do I get the bonus honor once for destroy army or province (or both) or do I get the bonus honor twice for destroying both?
I guess, is the (or both) preventing the double gain?
A: The Oracle wording indicates it only triggers once per battle if either (or both, implicitly) conditions are met. I believe this is the accurate interpretation. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 8 Apr 2025
