Rules Q&A
- Q: Follow-up, therefore, can Shrine of the Sun be used to discard such an offending event such as Shattered Focus or Commanding Favor?
A: I don't see the Relevance of the first to the second part.
Shrine of the Sun says, "Bow and destroy Shrine of the Sun to target an Event card in play or in any discard pile. End all ongoing effects of that card. Shuffle the Event into its owner's deck."
Any way you slice it, the Event goes back into owner's deck. It works on the Event weather it is in play, out of play, has ongoing effects, or have no effects at all. Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 January 2005", 21 Jan 2005 - Q: Lets say you have an event that allows a victory condition at the begining of your next turn, Like "The Master of Five". And someone fulfills the condition for victory, but in between the trigger for victory and the begining of the would be winner's next turn another player uses Shrine of the Sun, or what ever that cancels all on going effects of an event. Would the player still win or not?
A: He wouldn't win. There is no effect to make him win. Shrine of the Sun would end any effect already generated that "waits" to cause a win at the beginning of the turn. When that time comes around, the effect is long gone. Martin Lund, "Rules for 4 September 2004", 8 Sep 2004 - Q: If i reshuffle far from the Empire with Shrine of the Sun, the raise that have already occured will continue or Shrine of the Sun turn it off?
A: The increase in the amount of honor required for an Honor Victory qualifies as "ongoing effects of that card" and is Negated by use of the Shrine of the Sun. Martin Lund, "Rules for 30 July 2004", 5 Aug 2004 - Q: If you end Chrysanthemum Festival with Shrine of the Sun, A) does everyone blow up their leftmost province? or B) Is a player "safe" if the created province has already been destroyed?
A: Neither. As noted above, Chrysanthemum Festival has no on-going effects. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 May 2004", 27 May 2004 - Q: Can A New Order be ended by Shrine of the Sun or Unexpected Strike? If yes, what is the amount of honor necessary for a victory afterwards?
A: The increase is an effect of A New Order. It is on-going. Shrine of the Sun and Unexpected Strike end on-going effects of the Event, so it will remove A New Order's 10 point increase from the equation.
The honor required to win the game will be 40 +/- any modifications by effects that are still on-going in the game. Removing A New Order won't erase the increases from Far From the Empire, for example. You'd need another Shrine of the Sun for that. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 May 2004", 24 May 2004 - Q: Card text ala Websune: ---- Each player may draw two Fate cards and also permanently lower his maximum hand size by two. ----
Firstly, is the reduction of your hand size considered to be an "ongoing effect" of the event, allowing it be negated by Shrine of the Sun or a similar card?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 26 Feb. 2004", 27 Feb 2004 - Q: Can I use Shrine of the Sun to end the effects of Welcome Home, Imperial Gift, Chrysantemun Festival etc[?]
A: No. See Rules Archive, General Rules, Effects: http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/rulings/#Effects Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 16 October 2003, Part 3", 16 Oct 2003 - Q: If Far form the Empire has resolved and I have used the favor and then I use a Shrine of the Sun to end the effects of the Far from the Empire, do I now only need 40 honor to win through honor[?]
A: Yes (Rules Archive, General Rules, Effects; specific cards, Solar Eclipse).
Zen Faulkes! * Crab Clan Scholar * Unaligned Deputy Rules Guy Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 October 2003", 7 Oct 2003 - Q: If an event has resolved twice thanks to Moon and Sun, and then gets reshuffled by Shrine of the Sun, which effects are canceled : only the effects created when the event resolved for the second time, or all the effects.
A: Shrine of the Sun says, "End all ongoing effects of *that card*" (card text). So it snuffs all effects that physical copy generated.
If two different copies of the same event resolved, the answer would be different. Hm. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 September 2003, Part 2", 11 Sep 2003 - Q: If I use Shrine of the Sun on Far From the Empire do : a/ Honor Victory is set at 40 honor again b/ Honor Victory is kept at 40 + (3*Favor Utilisation) but using the favor don't increase it again.
A: A. See Rules Archive, General Rules, Effects, and specific cards, Solar Eclipse. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 September 2003", 10 Sep 2003 - Q: 1. Can I use Shrine of the Sun (or Unexpected Strike or some other event-ender) to end the effects of a New Emerald Champion?
A: Yes. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for July 15th, 2003", 15 Jul 2003 - Q: Would an Event that was targeted by Once and Again and then shuffled back to it's owner's deck by a Shrine of the Sun resolve another time?
A: If it is targeted with Once and Again, it may resolve one additional time, by title. Period. That is the effect of Once and Again.
If it was in your own discard pile AND you have not resolved it so far this game, its count for number-of-resolutions so far this game -- again, by title -- is reset to 0.
These effects are technically cumulative, but it's hard. Let's say someone else reveals and resolves Occult Murders. You react with Once and Again. Later, a second opponent reveals it. It resolves, too. Then you reveal it, discard it, and use Shrine of the Sun on it later. Now the game thinks Occult Murders has never resolved AND will allow it to resolve the next two times it's revealed, for any player. Jeff Alexander, "post for 26 May 2003", 29 May 2003 - Q: Ok say in time of war is in play, and I gain 20 honor. I am capped at a 5 pt. honor gain. Then I use Shrine of the Sun to end all on going effects of in time of war. Do I gain the 15 honor that in time of war has prevented me from gaining that turn?
A: Your Family Honor will change to reflect the full 20 you have gained so far this turn. This is not a gain and not a change. Your Family Honor is rising because a cap on its maximum allowed value is being lifted. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 April 2003", 9 Apr 2003 - Q: Along the lines of the ruling below..
Say In Time of War is in play. I have 3 Poorly Placed Gardens, and 3 Sanctified Temples in play.
I bow them all to gain honor. (12 total, Capped at 5).
If, for some reason, In Time of War disappears (Lets say I use my Shrine of the Sun on it) will I gain the 7 honor from earlier, or will all that honor disappear?
A: Your Family Honor will then be 12. This is not a gain -- your gains already happened. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 April 2003", 5 Apr 2003 - Q: 1) If Shrine of the Sun is used to cancel Chrysanthemum Festival and your opponent only has one province left, would he immediately lose the game?
A: No. The Province is not an "ongoing effect". It will not go away. Jeff Alexander, "post for 27 March 2003", 28 Mar 2003 - Q: Shrine of the Sun : "Limited: Bow and destroy the Shrine of the Sun to target an event card in play or in any discard pile. End all ongoing effects of that card. Shuffle the Even back into its owner's deck. If you have not resolved that Event this game, the Event no longer counts as having resolved this game. "
My opponent's Chrysanthemum Festival went off earlier. He's now at one province. Can I Shrine his Festival to win if I've made sure that the one left is the one the Festival gave him?
A: No. Gaining a Province is not an ongoing effect. You do not gain a Province constantly for the rest of the game -- you only gain it once. Jeff Alexander, "post for 17 March 2003", 18 Mar 2003 - Q: Shrine of the Sun reads: "Limited: Bow and destroy the Shrine of the Sun to target an event card in play or in any discard pile. End all ongoing effects of that card. Shuffle the Even back into its owner's deck. If you have not resolved that Event this game, the Event no longer counts as having resolved this game. "
A couple questions: 1) If I target my opponent's Chrysanthemum Festival, could it resolve a second time, granting another province to all players?
A: Any Event that YOU have not resolved yet this game is "washed clean" by using the Shrine of the Sun on it. This means it will resolve the next time it appears in anyone's Province as though it hasn't resolved at all yet -- even if the same opponent or teammate reveals it this time and an earlier time. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 February 2003", 1 Mar 2003 - Q: Question : When you use Shrine of the Sun to stop Suspicians or In Time of War, are these events considered to be "in play" or "in the discard pile".
A: Don't confuse the effects of an Event with the physical card. The card only remains in play if it says so (which applies to very few Events over the history of L5R). Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 February 2003", 25 Feb 2003 - Q: ... although the question is broader in scope.
As I understand the present rules, and specifically the definition of "permanent(ly)" as an ongoing effect (?), if I use Shrine of the Sun targeting a resolved Wanderers Revealed in my opponent's discard pile does the card nerfed by Wanderers recover all its wiped keywords, traits, and abilities?
A: Yes, a "permanent" effect is currently, and has always been, defined as an ongoing effect with an implicit duration of "until the game ends".
So, Shrine of the Sun could indeed "undo" the loss of traits, keywords, and abilities from Wanderers Revealed. Brook Cunningham, "More Wanderers Revealed...", 4 Apr 2012 - Q: To be clear, this doesn't work on your own resolution of Return to the Heavens due to the wording on Shrine of the Sun, right?
A: Right. Zen Faulkes, "Sun of the Sun + Return to the Heavens", 10 Mar 2008 - Q: re: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66255
Shrine of the Sun negates ongoing effects of an Event. Return to the Heavens has one Instantaneous effect and one Ongoing effect (unless I misread how Ongoing is defined): Instantaneous: Create two provinces. Ongoing: These two provinces never hold Dynasty cards.
Is this correct?
A: Two instant effects (you forgot Province destruction) but otherwise, yes, that's how it looks. Zen Faulkes, "Sun of the Sun + Return to the Heavens", 7 Mar 2008 - Q: Regarding http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66255:
Return to the Heavens also makes the two created provinces "permanently" not able to hold Dynasty cards. Is this not a separate, ongoing effect? It does not "involve a change in the game state that is officially recorded by changing the position, orientation, or count of a physical game element." Also, it has a duration. This would would lead me to believe that this aspect of Return to the Heavens is ongoing, not instantaneous, and can, therefore, be negated by Shrine of the Sun.
A: My initial thinking was that it was just a feature of the created Provinces. But there is that word "permanently" in there.
So yes, Shrine of the Sun would allow those Provinces to be filled immediately (http://rules.l5r.com/Areas_of_the_game# ... of_play.29). Zen Faulkes, "Sun of the Sun + Return to the Heavens", 7 Mar 2008 - Q: What effect would the Shrine of the Sun have on the Event(?)
A: Not a lot.
Shrine of the Sun negates "ongoing" effects (card text). Creating something isn't ongoing; it's instantaneous (http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects). Zen Faulkes, "Sun of the Sun + Return to the Heavens", 7 Mar 2008 - Q: If I use Shrine of the Sun's ability to recycle events targeting A New Wall, would I shuffle the Holding I got back in(?)
A: No. http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Duration_of_effects: "Instantaneous effects involve a change in the game state that is officially recorded by changing the position, orientation, or count of a physical game element. Such effects include: Changes to any card’s... game area(.)" Zen Faulkes, "Shrine of the Sun/A New Wall", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: Are the effects of Call of Thunder, "ongoing effects" for the purpose of Shrine of the Sun?
(answer might be different, depending on whether the player has brought a Unique Personality since the Event resolved, or not)
A: Yes. Martin Lund, "Call of Thunder and Shrine of the Sun", 27 Mar 2005 - Q: Hello, I would like to know if when a shrine of the sun ends the effects of the event Far From the Empire the permanent change created by Far From the Empire of the honor requirement for victory is brought back to 40 or if its still on the new number? And if its the same things as ending the effects with Unexpected Strike.
Thank you very much.
A: 40. See Archive, General rules, Effects for a list of things that are not "ongoing efects." Zen Faulkes, "Far from the Empire / Shrine of the Sun", 3 Mar 2005 - Q: Is kachikos kiss considered "in play" for purposes of shrine of the sun ?
A: No. "In play" means it literally put itself into play. Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 25 Apr 2021
