Rules Q&A
- Q: Minor Illusions Reaction: Bow this Shugenja after a holding is bowed to negate all effects of the Holding other than Gold production.
If my opponent has a Shrine to Daikoku in play that has targeted a Jade Works, and bows the Shrine to pay a gold cost, can I react with Minor Illusions to negate the effects of the +1 gold production on the Jade Works until the end of the turn?
A: Yes. Anything other than a creation, destruction, or change of control effect would be considered something that could be negated by using Minor Illusions. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for June 19, 2003", 19 Jun 2003 - Q: Been having a discussion on one of the clan lists about costs of some of the rares and wanted to get some more attention to it.
Shrine to Daikoku is running about 25-30$ on ebay.
Thats kind of alot of money for a non-unique non-promo rare.
Could the powers that be try to consider demand for a card when making it rare? I understand its a fine line as there is a business involved here and cards being bought is what keeps it going, but one of the nice things about L5R is its usually much easier to get all the rares you need for your deck or your collection than some of the other games.
Just wanted to bring this up.
A: eBay prices are not a good indication of average price. All it takes is one person, anywhere, to be willing to part with $30 to get a card instead of letting someone else have it to generate the prices you're seeing. An auction by its very nature will showcase the maximum price, not the average.
The rapid sellout of Heaven & Earth is also inflating the price of EVERY card in the set. Supply and demand, you know.
And high-cost rares are the exception, not the rule. Remarkably few even make it into the double-digits.
And anyway, when you get right down to it, the only way to ensure no rare is ever expensive is to ensure they are all weak and lackluster, which would be staggeringly detrimental to the health of the game. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 July 2003", 5 Jun 2003 - Q: Instead, they made Gifts and Favors a fixed card in starter decks and everyone can get them. If Shrine to Daikoku proves important enough, I'm almost certain we'll see more access to it.
A: It will not prove "important enough". There is a universe of difference between a card that helps one uniquely and dependably recover from a gold-free first turn and just one more Holding that costs two gold and can be used to produce three -- something most clans already have three of in their decks. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 July 2003", 5 Jun 2003 - Q: Let's say both my opponent and I have a Shrine to Daikoku in play. Can I give him control of my Shrine when paying for the Otomo Ambassador?
A: No, because he cannot control more than one. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 April 2003", 30 Apr 2003 - Q: I was told a ruling was made and dont know how to look it up for validaty. If tokaro targets a singular holding like say shrine to daikoku, and a personality when you have that holding as well it kills the personality since they can't give you a singular hlolding you alrteady have?
A: Answered before here. Zen Faulkes, "Tokaro and Shrine to Daikoku", 17 Mar 2005
