- Notes
- Legal December 1st, 2011, Released in the 2011 Summer Con pack, Per AEG Forum Ruling, the trait only protects the chosen Celestial from being discarded per the Rulebook procedure discarding Celestials because another is entering play, not other discard effects triggered by the same occurence, such as the trait on Daigotsu's Guidance.

Rules Q&A
- Q: This is in regards to viewtopic.php?p=1333982#p1333982
If the situation is reversed and I have Benten's in play with Jurojin's and Ryoshun's being revealed, both Jurojin's and Ryoshun's would enter play successfully (without kicking out Benten's) because Shrine to the Heavens would trigger once per province during the Events phase, per the Turn Sequence rules. Correct?
A: Correct. As long as it wasn't off a use of Border Keep, where all cards are revealed simultaneously. Jon Palmer, "Follow-up on Shrine to the Heavens", 26 Mar 2013 - Q: I'm looking for clarification on http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=95544

Are you able to use a single Shrine to the Heavens to prevent the destruction of multiple celestials (from the appearance of another celestial in your provinces)
e.g. Jurojin's blessing and Ryoshun's Guidance in play, I flip Benten's Blessing while I control 1 Shrine to the Heavens
The previous ruling seems to indicate that I can use the single trigger to activate the Shrine multiple times, but my playgroup is quite opposed to this interpretation, indicating that if multiple celestials flipped in a turn you could protect a celestial each time, ending up with 2 celestials in play.
A: In your example, no.
A single Shrine to the Heavens will trigger only once when Benten's Blessing is revealed. While traits can trigger multiple times per turn, any one instance of a trait will only resolve once per trigger.
You will have to pick one of your Celestials in play, and the other will be discarded when Benten's Blessing enters play. Ben Higgins, "Shrine to the Heavens + Multiple Celestials", 13 Jan 2013 - Q: Ok, so I'm playing a WoH or Legacy game and running Togashi's Guidance and Togashi's Guidance Exp. Assuming that I have Togashi's Guidance (the non-exp version) in play, and Togashi's Guidance Exp comes into play, my understanding is that the second Celestial does not enter play, and the first Celestial is not discarded, since they are Unique cards with the same title (or specifically because the one that wants to enter play is a Unique card with the same title as a card in play).
Shrine to the Heavens doesn't seem to make a difference... either way, the second Celestial won't enter play because it's Unique and there is a card by the same name already in play (thus, steps C and D of celestial resolution never happen).
So my question is:
If Togashi's guidance (non-exp) leaves play (presumably because I use the Reaction on it), what happens to the other guidance? There doesn't seem to be any mechanic to re-initiate Celestial Resolution outside of having a THIRD celestial in the deck to re-trigger it. It seems like once the second Celestial pops up and fails to enter play, it's just stuck there in my provinces until I discard it at the end of a Dynasty phase... I can't do anything with it. Is that right?

Shrine to the Heavens, for completeness
And for those playing along at home:
A: Correct, and you're looking in exactly the right place. Celestials only try to enter play when they're revealed; if you had an effect to turn the province facedown, then discarded the original Celestial from play, the Celestial would enter play when revealed again. Jon Palmer, "Multiple experienced versions of the same Celestial in WoH", 17 Jul 2012 - Q: I saw this asked already, but the answer given wasn't an answer.
If I have 2 Shrine to the Heavens in play, and 2 Celestials in play as a result of it, then flip a third celestial in my province, is the following true?
Celestial flips One Shrine to the Heavens trait targets one of my in-play celestials. The OTHER Shrine to the Heavens trait targets the other celestial I have in play. The celestial just revealed in my province enters play, neither in-play celestial is discarded, and I have 3 celestials in play.
A: That's pretty much how it works, yes.
It looks like what I said before, while correct, was completely irrelevant. Sorry. Alex Jones, "Shrine to the Heavens", 14 Mar 2012 - Q: just a quick question or two
I have let say two/three Shrine to the Heavens in play and also two celestial in play and during the event phase another celestial flips in one of the provinces, what will happened next? do I have 3 celestials in play or just 2 or 1?
also how does the "wind of the moon" and "Benten's Blessing" works with proclaim or it just pump up the PH and proclaim its the base PH?
thanks.
A: The trait on Shrine to the Heavens triggers each time a Celestial appears in your province. Unlike abilities, traits are not generally limited to once per turn.
The Proclaim ability is: Reaction: After you bring a Personality in your province with your Clan alignment into play without Clan discount, if it is your turn: Gain Honor equal to his base Personal Honor.
Proclaim checks the Personality's base Personal Honour, so it is unaffected by changes to the Personality's current Personal Honour. Alex Jones, "Shrine to the Heavens", 5 Jan 2012 - Q: I have a bit of confusion about this thread.
Just for relevance, i'm going to cite the rules on celestials:
And also, for clarity, i'm going to cite L5R Search's text for Shrine to the Heavens.
(Emphasis mine)
First: I am confused how the shrine to the heavens and the rulebook interact at all. From my understanding, the rulebook does not explicitly state that the reason the celestial is discarded is because of another Celestial entering play, and so my question is how is it that the rulebook effect is negated at all by the shrine of the heaven's trait?
As an aside however, if the shrine of the heaven's specifically stated something about the rulebook i'd understand, but according to the rulebook itself, the old celestial is being discarded before the new celestial even comes into play. I think the rulebook should be altered to reflect that the cause of the Old Celestial being discarded is that the new Celestial is entering play.
An unimportant additional confusion: While Daigotsu's Guidance's trait is the source of the discard effect, the trigger is still the Celestial entering play. Are you saying that "because" refers to the source of the effect and not to the trigger of said effect?
I'm sure my confusions are due to my own misunderstanding of something.
A: In the text you quote, there is the following: A. The Celestial cards enter a specially created entering-play area.
The Celestials in play are discarded after the newly revealed ones have entered an entering play area. Post hoc ergo propter hoc does apply in this instance.
Also, you ask: An unimportant additional confusion: While Daigotsu's Guidance's trait is the source of the discard effect, the trigger is still the Celestial entering play. Are you saying that "because" refers to the source of the effect and not to the trigger of said effect? The answer to this is yes. Alex Jones, "Shrine to the Heavens and Daigotsu's Guidance", 9 Dec 2011 - Q: I know you don't normally answers EE rules questions but Alex specifically invited someone to ask this question.
A: No. I stated that if a question were asked about Shrine to the Heavens, we'd answer it, but not questions about Daigotsu's Guidance.
For example: On Shrine to the Heavens, what does "because the other Celestial is entering play" mean? This phrase refers to the Rulebook effect that discards Celestials controlled by the player bringing a Celestial into play. It does not refer to effects from traits or Reactions triggered by a Celestial entering play. Alex Jones, "Shrine to the Heavens and Daigotsu's Guidance", 1 Dec 2011
