Rules Q&A
- Q: OK, in November, I asked about Ogedei being affected by -X Chi tokens. But, people are disputing about other ways of Chi death. By his trait, is he immune from someone else using Written In Blood, Daigotsu Dojo, Shukumei, or any other current card that just creates a non-token Chi reduction?
A: Written in Blood, Daigotsu Dojo, and Shukumei are all cards. Their effects can't reduce Moto Ogedei's Chi if they are owned by a player other than Ogedei's controller, as per his card text: "Ogedei's Chi may no be reduced by effects from cards other players own." Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 December 2004", 15 Dec 2004 - Q: How so? I announce Suiteru-chan's action and choose Shukumei as the sacrifice. I choose Shukumei, Iuchiban, Naka Tokei and Suiteru as the locations of the follower tokens.
All announcements have been made and decisions have been made (since you have to do all of your targeting before the action begins to resolve).
A: [MARTY] To be more clear, this is what has happened:
You've declared / announced your Action.
You've chosen all your Targets.
Now you're moving on to "Pay Costs." Martin Lund, "Rules for 25 June 2004", 28 Jun 2004 - Q: Shukumei dies. Shukumei is no longer a legal target for the Suiteru follower token, but that doesn't matter since it doesn't qualify under Jeff's rule. Shukumei became an illegal target AFTER the action began to resolve.
A: [MARTY] As noted above, this is incorrect. Shukumei was destroyed while paying costs - BEFORE the action began to resolve. That will make Shukumei inelligible for Suiteiru tokens. Martin Lund, "Rules for 25 June 2004", 28 Jun 2004 - Q: Am I missing something here that keeps Shukumei from getting a follower?
A: [MARTY] The only thing you've missed is the timing:
1.) Announce Action
2.) Select Targets
3.) Pay Costs (sacrifice Shukumei)
4.) Resolve Effects Martin Lund, "Rules for 25 June 2004", 28 Jun 2004 - Q: Got to wondering about Hantei the 39th. If his massive 10 chi got lowered by 9 [Doom of Fu Leng], then an opponent played Shukumei and targeted him, which would kill him, only he says he does not bie, but returns to your fief bowed, what happens then? He still has 0 Chi, so he dies again, but his trait says he goes to your fief bowed. Seems like an infinite loop, so does he essentially just become bowed, and continue with the game? Or am I missing something?
A: Jeff's already been there, done that, and bought the T-Shirt.
"If he is reduced to 0 Chi, he remains bowed in your fief. [JA, 15 October 2002]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Hantei the 39th") Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 June 2004", 21 Jun 2004 - Q: Now suppose that I'm in the same situation as described above, only now I've assigned a Goblin Wizard to defend the province. Can I play Rising Shadows and bow Shukumei in order to bow Maiko?
A: Yes. You have satisfied Presence by having Goblin Wizard in the battle. You satisfy Relevance by choosing Maiko (a card at the battle) as a target. Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 April 2004", 14 Apr 2004 - Q: 2. If you use the Pit of Blood to save Shukumei, when you return him to play, does his trait kick off again and give someone -1/-1?
A: Pit of Blood tells you to put him into play. It says to ignore all costs and restrictions. His entering-play effect from his trait is neither a cost nor a restriction, so it triggers. You must give someone -1/-1. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 April 2004", 4 Apr 2004
