Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Shuten Doji’s Fury 0G 2FV Battle: Dishonor one of your target unbowed Personalities: Lose 3 Honor. Bow one or more target cards opposing him without attachments, up to his base Personal Honor." Rules Q&A
- Q: Okay. The card reads "...bow any cards without attachments"
There are currently 2 schools of players in my shop now.
The first school are supporters of RAW. They think the card can bow attachments since attachments are "cards without attachments" by the letter of rules.
The second school are supporters of card logic. They think the card effects fizzles and can not bow attachments since attachments can never legally have attachments in the first place so they won't fit in the targeting requirement of "cards without attachments".
Which school is correct? (an official ruling will be most helpful on this one)
Cheers,
A: The only card type that can have attachments is "Personality". If Shuten Doji's Fury was meant only to target Personalities, it would say "Personalities without attachments." It doesn't: it says "cards without attachments." Alex Jones, "Shuten Doji's Fury and Attachments (targeting)", 5 Aug 2008 - Q: Shuten Doji's Fury: (I)f I dishonor a personality with 0 base personal honor as a cost for this card, do I get to bow 1 target or 0 targets?
A: "One or more" (card text). One. Zen Faulkes, "Shuten Doji's Fury and 0 base personal honor", 11 Apr 2008 - Q: Misdirection
Political Gozoku Reaction : Before another player would choose targets for one of his action's effects during a battle, target one of your Courtier or Gozoku Personalities: You choose the targets instead.
Shuten Doji's Fury
Battle : Dishonor one of your target Personalities: Lose 3 Honor. Bow one or more target cards opposing him without attachments, up to his base Personal Honor.
Opponent play Shuten Doji's Fury and dishonor personality with 3 base personal honor. Can I play Misdirection and choose to target only one my card with Fury instead of targeting three cards as my opponet would choose?
A: Yes, as noted here Martin Lund, "Misdirection and Shuten Doji's Fury", 7 Mar 2008 - Q: For example:
i have personality with 2 personal honor and performing shuten doji's fury against 2 pesonalities w/o attachments:
How misdirection works here? I targeted the 2 personalities A and B, if my opponent use misdirection from A to B, is it Legal?
A: Read the most recent printing of Misdirection again.
"Political Gozoku Reaction: Before another player would choose targets for one of his action’s effects during a battle, target one of your Courtier or Gozoku Personalities: You choose the targets instead."
You never got to target anything. The player playing Misdirection made all the targeting decisions, not you. He could choose just one target even if you wanted to target 2 or 3 cards. Martin Lund, "Shuten Doji's Fury vs. Misdirection/Seat of Power", 17 Jan 2008 - Q: Player A plays Shuten Dojis Fury targeting three heros of player B. Can player B play Take the Charge to redirect the action to one of the other originally targets and thus change the number of targets for the action?
A: Take the Charge says, "Heroic Reaction: When a Battle action would target one of your Personalities: The action instead targets another legal Hero Personality of your choice that you control."
Shuten Doji's Fury can not target the same Personality more than once. So a Hero Personality who is already Target B could not qualify as "another legal Hero Personality" for the purposes of being Target C.
Also, remember that targeting another legal target is the exception to the regular rules about "instead." Martin Lund, "Take the Charge vs Shuten Doji's Fury", 19 Nov 2007 - Q: EXCEPTION: In effects that substitute targeting, if the new target has to be a "legal" target, then failure to find a new legal target -- one that satisfies the requirements of the original targeting plus any additional requirements on targeting from other sources -- means the original targeting happens normally. [ADDED 24 Sept 2007]
A: So unless you can find a legal Hero Personality who was not one of the original 3 targets of Shuten Doji's Fury, you can't get anywhere with Take the Charge.
The same thing goes for Turn of Fortune. Martin Lund, "Take the Charge vs Shuten Doji's Fury", 19 Nov 2007 - Q: Hi !
1st question:
If I play a card that targets a number of targets up to a certain value (like Shuten Doji's Fury) and my opponent plays Misdirection on it, can he target 0 card (or a different number than me) ?
In lotus, the answer was 'no' but with Misdirection's new wording...
A: Well, you never get to choose a number in the first place. Misdirection's wording now has it kick in "before" you get to do any targeting.
He has to choose at least the minimum number of targets a card specifies, since the minimum number is considered to be the "mandatory" targeting.
Shuten Doji's Fury has a most recent printing of: "Bow one or more target cards ..."
So he's have to pick at least one, but he can pick just one, even if you intended to pick more. Martin Lund, "Misdirection and "up to"/ Determination vs Determination", 30 Jul 2007
