Rules Q&A
- Q: Would Silence add his permanent +1F if you tactician force bonus with him?
A: No. The force bonus isn't from a card (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 September 2003", 12 Sep 2003 - Q: I have a question on the force bonus for Kaiu Hisayuki.
A: Left for Jeff. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 August 2003", 22 Aug 2003 - Q: 2. If I use the force bonus from Razor's Edge Dojo on an army including Kaiu Hisayuki, soul of Silence, does he just increase the force bonus on himself or does the stronghold now give everyone +2 force?
Just himself.
A stronghold is not a card, so Silence does not increase the boost...
A: Good catch. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 13th, 2003", 13 Aug 2003 - Q: 2. If I use the force bonus from Razor's Edge Dojo on an army including Kaiu Hisayuki, soul of Silence, does he just increase the force bonus on himself or does the stronghold now give everyone +2 force?
A: Just himself. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 8th, 2003", 8 Aug 2003 - Q: It was probably asked a long time ago when the cards first showed up, but if I target Silence with the Hida Technique, does he permanently gain +2 force? And if he has Kaimetsu-Uo's Ono attached, is it then +3 permanently? I think the answer is fairly obvious, but I just want to double check.
A: Yes and yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 January 2002", 29 Jan 2002 - Q: Does it allows a player to play action cards after a Great Silence? Or play a terrain after a Winter Warfare? Or target a personality with a Kitsuki Kaagi's Journal's personality with a BSL? Play any action from out of the battle under the effect of a Ravine?
A: Yes, yes, no, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 October 2001", 9 Oct 2001 - Q: Here's the big problem I have with the Silence, Imperial Ambassador and Imperial Favor arguements in reference to force penalties (or bonuses) as extrapolated from Honor loss/gain issue - all of these examples are instantenous - they are played as reactions (or 'faster' in the case of Silence) and are not capable of being applied several actions after the original event occurs. The Imp Ambassador and Favor in particular *modify the gain/loss at the exact point of occurance* prior to the gain/loss actually being applied. Of course it doesn't create a new honor loss - it alters the original gain *AT THE TIME IT IS MADE and BEFORE IT IS APPLIED* (pardon the shouting). ISotF can be played well after the original modification and application has been applied (see the 'Test of Might' reference above) possible *WELL AFTER* the bonus was applied. No matter the semantics, a force reduction is occuring after the force increase, potentially well after the effects of the force increase have been felt. If you guys have ruled that it's not a force penalty despite the force reduction, we obviously have to accept that. It is, however, a very different situation from that used in the Ambassador/Favor/Silence example just by the fact of the timing.
A: True, but we're also talking about two completely different conceptual things. Honor gains/losses exist only instantaneously. They happen, modify your family honor, and then there is no more gain/loss. Force bonuses, on the other hand, stick around for a while. During their extended existence, they can apparently be modified. This is a new rule to me too, guys.
I'm definitely not happy with all the dirty rules bugs that have crawled out from underneath this particular rock, and I *really* wish that Battle of Shallow Waters had had a completely different coasterific effect, but making it so that a modification of a force bonus/penalty is not a new penalty/bonus seems to be the only way to make everything reconcile.
*shrug* Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 15th", 15 Nov 2000 - Q: As someone who has played since '97 I tend to have a decent set of cards and while perusing through the rules I noticed the Ivory Edition has changed some of the statements on "Soul of" in the proxies and rules statements. First can I use proxies in tournaments when the tournament rules state things must be bugged, when the rulebook states older versions of a "soul of" card can be used as proxies if you inform your opponent of changes, if so do I need a copy of the card? I suspect yes I can use a Kaiu Hisayuki by bringing a copy of both Hisayuki and Saiyuki. The next question is does Silence count as Hida Saiyuk stilli? Kaiu Hisayuki was a Soul of Silence originally, but Samurai had no "Soul of X" Keyword so his MRP doesnt have the soul of Keyword and you didnt really have the issue of them counting as each other as proxies back then. Can you proxy a proxy with both at a tournament ie Silence for Hida since it only states you can proxy an older card and Technically Silence is the older version of Hisayuki? If not, does Silence no longer count as Kaiu Hisayuki for MRP reasons, can I then double up Hida Saiyuki and Silence in Legacy since Legacy is no longer listed on the list of "official" formats but states "Legacy is can be boiled down to play all cards as they are worded in the Oracle" (yes the typo is on the rules sheet). Just a headache and a curiosity going through my old hordes of cards trying to get ready for the new set and feeling a bit nostalgic.
A: In the future, if you could use line breaks to organize the questions it'd be really helpful to us! But I think I can tackle this anyway.
1. "Soul of" allows you to use the specific older version of the Personality in place of the most recent version, played with the text of the most recent version.
2. You do not need a copy of the new card, tho it can be helpful. With Oracle online, you can always get a judge to confirm exact text.
3. Silence and Hida Saiyuki have nothing to do with each other from an Ivory Edition perspective. There is no transitive property of Soul ofs.
4. As of his most recent printing, Kaiu Hisayuki is no longer the Soul of Silence, so Soul of is not longer a consideration in their interaction for deckbuilding.
5. Assuming Legacy is using the Soul of rules for deckbuilding, you can only have 3 of Kaiu Hisayuki + Hida Saiyuki, but you may have 3 copies of Silence in addition to that.
Please note that Big Deck ignores the Soul of rule, so you can run one of each version of a Soul chain. Jon Palmer, "Hida Saiyuki/Soul Of Kaiu Hisayuki/Soul of Silence", 22 Jan 2014
