Rules Q&A
- Q: Stronholds, winds and senseis reveals at the same time. So, What hapens if I reveal at the same time K Bayushi, two winds and Gozoku sensei? What effect comes first, if any?
A: You get told that you can't do that. You have to arrange a legal set-up to begin the game. There is no game timing issue. If anything about your set-up is illegal, you can not proceed with the game. At that point, you're just stalling.
Post-errata, Kyuden Bayushi doesn't even give you the option of revealing anything but Two Winds if you play with it anyway. Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 November 2004", 16 Nov 2004 - Q: The Shadowed Tower of the Shosuro says:
Tireless Political Reaction, (bow): After an action from your Political Strategy resolves, shuffle the Strategy into your Fate deck instead of discarding it. You may bow your target performing Courtier to ignore the cost of bowing this Stronghold.
Bayushi says:
You may ignore the cost of bowing Bayushi for Political actions he performs.
1) Would Bayushi be able to fulfill the conditions of the Shadowed Tower reaction without bowing?
2) Is there more recent wording for these? If so, where would I find it? I thought that 'performing' was removed from the game. I got these wordings from the Oracle of the Void database, but if there is a more up-to-date or more official source, I would appreciate a link.
A: 1) Yes, those cards interact the way you think.
2) Those are the most up-to-date wordings for these cards, though admittedly the entire Oracle isn't quite Ivory-ized yet. In this case though, while performing is gone from Ivory now, it was too integral a part of the game in the past to remove from older cards, so it's preserved on such cards. The definition of "performing" will soon be added to the Legacy Format Rules (I've gotten a little behind, sorry), which besides the Oracle is needed to fully play with all older cards. Brook Cunningham, "Shadowed Tower of the Shosuro + Bayushi", 26 May 2014 - Q: Is Hantei Kachiko considered a Bayushi as well as a Hantei?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Legacy_Glossary_F#Family_Name: "A family name is the first (or only) name in a Personality's title" (emphasis added). Zen Faulkes, "Hantei Kachiko", 9 Jul 2008 - Q: My opponent plays unicorn and i Shadowlands. He has a Bayushi tsimaru exp out and i a samarhad and a zamalash. Now i use Samarhads action on Tsimaru to get control of tsimaru and then i use zamalashs react again on the tsimaru (but now i'm the controller).
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Negating_effects: "Similarly, effects that try to put a card in a state it is in already never occur. This is not negation."
Thus, you cannot take control of a card you already control.
Thus, you cannot return a card that you never took control of (Zamalash).
And you must return the card to its original player that you took with Samarahad. Zen Faulkes, "samarhad + zamalash", 11 Mar 2008 - Q: the other day i have doubts about a couple of card interactions in legacy: When i activate first Bayushi ability agains a player with o-ushi sensei, can he change the stat to force? Is first Bayushi ability only permanent on him?
A: No. "Checking" a stat is when an effect looks at a stat and produces an effect based on the value of the stat, not when it affects the stat directly.
(Replying to a player: "And is Bayushi second ability only permanent on himself and until end of turn for the rest?") Correct.
(Replying to a player: "So, o ushi sensei can change a Testo of Honor to a Test of “Strength”, right?") Correct. That was my go-to first example. And she changes Chi duels to Force for her player (but I had to Oracle some clarifying text onto her for that based on contemporary rulings, as a duel isn't exactly a direct "check"). I was looking for more, but hopefully you understand? Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 14 Oct 2026 - Q: I'm pretty sure I already know the answer is "no", but I'm gonna ask to make sure... If I bring into play two corrupted Geisha House and use two Rhetoric to give the honor loss to an opponent, can I bring into play Bayushi?
A: You're correct that the answer is "no". Rhetoric just moves the recipient, it doesn't change the source. Also, the MRP of Rhetoric won't redirect losses from traits. Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 18 Sep 2023
