Rules Q&A
- Q: I realize that I can now play the second Ciphered Scroll to exchange The Fires from Within with the original Speed of the Plains, but if I do so, can I cast Speed of the Plains again, even though Najato has clearly cast it this turn already?
A: No. It does not matter if that copy of Speed of the Plains moved to your hand and then back into play. It is still the same copy, and still under the effect of its "once per turn" clause.
Now, if you had a different copy of Speed of the Plains in your hand, you'd be in business. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 May 2004", 9 May 2004 - Q: Elemental Air Battle: Once per turn, without bowing this Shugenja, immediately take two additional consecutive Battle and/or Open actions. If this Shugenja has the Air trait, you may use this action if this Shugenja is not in the current battle.
Does attaching the spell to an Air Shuggie let you ignore Presence, Relevance, or both? It doesn't specifically address either, but if it doesn't bypass at least one of them, the extra effect doesn't do anything.
A: That second clause is there to override the Rule of Relevance, which would normally require the Shugenja be in the battle to cast the Spell. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 April 2004", 30 Apr 2004 - Q: When this spell is attached to an Air Shugenja, is it possible to play this action in a battle in which you have no units?
A: No. You must still have *a* unit there. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 27 Feb. 2004", 28 Feb 2004 - Q: 2. I attack with a shugenja with the stick and Kuro's. My opponent blocks with lots of people. I Sneak Attack, then Speed of the Plains giving me two actions. I use the first to Rend the Soul and use the second to Kuro's and destroy his entire army. Is resolution still a tie even though he has no personalities in his army?
A: A battle cannot be a win, loss, or tie unless there is at least one unit on both sides during resolution. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 16 Feb. 204", 18 Feb 2004 - Q: Does this mean that if the shugenja using the spell performs either of the two additional actions, no bowing is required to perform them even if bowing is normally required?
A: No; it simply waives the normal bowing that is the default cost of the spell. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 December 2003", 11 Dec 2003 - Q: Would the same answer be true for other similar actions such as Speed of the Plains?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Hazardous Ground and granted actions", 28 Apr 2008
