- Erratum: Reads, "Stand Or Run 0G 2FV Iaijutsu Battle: One of your Samurai Personalities issues a challenge to an opposing Personality. If the challenge is refused, send the opponent home bowed. A bowed Personality cannot refuse this challenge." [MRP, Diamond Edition, 27 October 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 34
Rules Q&A
- Q: How are your two previous rulings different from my question concerning Flee and Keen Eye for Stand or Run and Show me Your Stance?
A: One is wrong. Hint: the one where I gave a reference to the Archive is the right one. Keen Eyes can't be played in response to targeting or paying costs for an action that generates a challenge (Archive). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 December 2003, Part 2", 3 Dec 2003 - Q: Can Keen Eye cancel a Flee the Darkness played in response to Stand or Run or Show me Your Stance?
A: No (Archive, http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/#Duels). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 December 2003", 2 Dec 2003 - Q: How does AToC work with cards such as Stand or Run, or basically any send-home that is not direct, but results from a choice?
A: It depends. If the effect is physically written in ink behind something that says, "Battle," "Open,", "Reaction," or "Limited" (though that last one is unlikely), A Test of Courage can cancel it. There is no "indirect" send home. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 November 2003, Part 2", 28 Nov 2003 - Q: the latest consensus around the gaming table was that a Personality being sent home from Stand or Run was sent home by the choice to refuse, not the action specifically.
A: Consensus is wrong. See Rules Archive, Decisions: http://l5r.alderac.com/rulings/#Decision Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 November 2003, Part 2", 28 Nov 2003 - Q: If an opponent issues a Stand or Run challenge and you have Defend Your Master in play, must you select the duel?
A: No. The option presented isn't "stay or go," it's "accept or refuse." Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 November 2003", 27 Nov 2003 - Q: Stand or Run
A: Not legal. It's a challenge. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 April 2002", 9 Apr 2002 - Q: Suppose I take an action that creates a duel, in which my Personality is a Duelist whose duel stat is not lower than the other Personality's. Can I use the Interrupt on Hidden Strength, pay the Invest, not get any of the Focus-related effects, and still draw a card at the end from the Invest?
EDIT: And an additional question - if I play a card such as Stand or Run, with a challenge that may be refused, when do I play Hidden Strength? Am I required to do so before my opponent chooses whether to accept the challenge? If so, am I correct in thinking that I would not draw the card from the Invest if they then refused the challenge?
EDIT 2: And a final question, I hope - if I create a duel in which my personality has a lower duel stat and play Hidden Strength, my opponent and I both Focus, and then my opponent plays Smoke and Mirrors, is the bonus +2FV from Hidden Strength then lost with the discarded focused card?
A: An "if" in an action's effects only indicate that the condition following the "if" must be true for the action to be announced, if that "if" starts the ability's text. See the Good Faith Rule, item 3.
For example, the "If" in the ability on Hidden Storehouse of House Rafiq begins the text, so if you will not have fewer cards in hand after playing it, you may not declare the action. On the other hand, Hidden Strength's text begins with "After", so you may play it to Interrupt any action.
However, the Invest trait's phrase, "your Personality", relates only to the Personality who is "your Personality" in the duel. If the action does not create a duel - for example, if there is no challenge, or the challenge is refused - the phrase "your Personality" has no meaning, so the Invest trait fails to create an effect. On the other hand, if a duel is created, the phrase has meaning, so the Invest trait will draw you a card if your Personality is a Duelist, regardless of the relative Chi stats.
You must play Hidden Strength in the action's Interrupt Action Round, which, as step D of the Action Sequence, comes before step E, the Effects step, which is when the challenge occurs, and is accepted or refused.
The first card focused gets the bonus. If it is discarded by Smoke and Mirrors, it gets the +2FV when it is turned face-up. Alex Jones, "Hidden Strength (20F)", 30 Mar 2015 - Q: Hello! I had a quick question about this interaction.
If I'm at a battlefield and with Sulphurous Swamps in effect, play Stand or Run, and my opponent elects to move home bowed, who has to discard the card?
We weren't sure because while Stand or Run technically generates the action of a duel, it's the opponent's action (choice) to move home.
Cheers!
Stand Or Run: Iaijutsu Battle: Your target unbowed Personality challenges a target enemy Personality. If he is unbowed, he may refuse. If he does, move him home and bow him as he moves. Destroy the duel's loser.
Sulphurous Swamps: Players discard a card after each time one of their own actions moves a Personality home. After a player's action destroys this Terrain, he discards a card.
A: Stand or Run moves the Personality home, so the player who played it discards a card. Alex Jones, "Sulphurous Swamps + Stand or Run", 28 Jan 2015 - Q: If a personality is protected by the ring of earth and refuses a Stand or Run, is it bowed and sent home since it was the players choice to refuse or does it just bow but stay in the army?
A: The Personality stays where it is, unbowed. The player issuing the challenge is the one doing the sending (Stand or Run card text). Sent home bowed" is one effect (Web of Lies rulesheet). Zen Faulkes, "Ring of Earth", 11 Apr 2005
