Rules Q&A
- Q: Is anyone else having problems getting to Steel and Iron?
A: It's always nice to be noticed. :/ The website was available, it just had the wrong index page... It's fixed now.
Incidentally, I've updated the intro for newbies, am putting more information on the front page for the checklists, and even squeezed in a new Zen's Card of the Moment. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 20 October 2003, Part 2", 21 Oct 2003 - Q: Can Steel and Iron bow the books owner to Destroy the Book as it targets a Ninja? Can Hidden Blade be used against a Booked Personality as it has to target a Ninja (Having your Ninja duel the Book bearer) ? Can Han-kyu Target a booked Personality as the Han-kyu could only target a Ninja when it is attached?
A: No, no, no.
To target the Book or other cards in its unit, THAT target of the action must be one that targets only Ninja cards. It's insufficient for there to be Ninja targeting merely involved somewhere along the way. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 18 March 2001", 24 Mar 2001 - Q: The November 9 rules archive on the Steel and Iron web site, http://www.planet.net.au/~zfaulkes/o-ushi.html#Archive , has the following item.
A card that cannot be sent home will bow if affected by something that causes it to be "sent home bowed." [REVERSAL, JA, 2 November 2000]
I do not recall seeing this item on the L5R newsgroups. What is the current status of this ruling?
A: Well, I went and looked back at Jeff's posts from that time, and here's what I found:
** Costs and Effects ** Some effects have multiple independent elements that resolve ** separately. For example, a card that says "send a card home bowed and ** dishonored" targeting a card that "cannot be sent home" dishonors the ** target but does not send it home. ** ** Is the target bowed? If not, if the card were worded "send a card home ** dishonored and bowed" would this bow the target but not dishonor them? * * Yes, it is still bowed. This example is particularly bad.

So, that looks like a re-reversal to me. Take it as such until you hear something different. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 13th", 13 Nov 2000
