Rules Q&A
- Q: In a Storm Heart between my lion personality who is double chi( from the kiho, built in , or someother reason) and some one else. My lion wins the duel with say 30 personal honor. He becomes dishonored because of storm heart I react with Yokutsu no shiryo to have him commit seppuku and gain his personal honor since the duel hasn't completely resolved I would gain 30 honor, since he still has the bonus from the focusing.
A: That's perfectly fine. The Stat-bonus lasts until the end of the duel, and Storm Heart dishonors the winner during Duel Resolution while Yokutsu happens "before" the dishonoring effect. Martin Lund, "Rules for 10 September 2004", 13 Sep 2004 - Q: The original question was if a person would gain honor off of winning a Storm Heart and he has Blade of Penance attached, does the active player get to choose the order of 'winner becoming dishonored' and 'the honor gain from BoP'?
A: The effects are NOT simultaneous.
Winning happens when values are compared - just like winning a Battle. Reactions / triggers for winning happen. That's when Blade of Penance steps in. Once you finish with all that, move on to the next sequential effect of the duel-creating card (destroying the loser, dishonoring the winner) - just like Destroying cards in a losing Army happens AFTER Yu triggers for losing a Battle. Martin Lund, "Rules for 7 September 2004", 10 Sep 2004 - Q: If an Honorable personality with Blade of Penance attached wins the duel from Storm Heart against a non-SL personality, does the active player get to decide the order of the 4 honor gain from BoP and the dishonoring from SH?
A: They are not simultaneous, so there is no choice in the matter.
When you compare Chi Totals, someone wins and someone loses. Take any Reactions or triggers to winning / losing (including that of Blade of Penance). Once those are done, go on to the effects of the duel's resolution itself.
This is analogous to Battle Resolution. First you determine who wins or loses, then you React to victory / defeat, and then finally you resolve the battle by destroying the losing (or tied) army (or armies).
So gain 4 Honor, then Dishonor the winner if the other guy was not Shadowlands. Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 and 6 September 2004", 8 Sep 2004 - Q: Can the personality issuing a Storm Heart bow to reshuffle the Storm Heart into the player's fate deck using the Shadowed Tower? If they do, does the challange still occur?
A: The Action continues as normally, even if the performing Personality becomes ineligible to perform the Action during the course of the play. Otherwise, To Do What We Must would never work, since you destroy the Performing personality as a cost. Spell casting would always fail with Spells that require bowing the Shugenja to pay the cost, too.
Performing cards just have to be valid choices when you initially choose them. Martin Lund, "Rules for 30 July 2004", 5 Aug 2004 - Q: If one or more of an action's targets become illegal between when they are chosen and when the action begins to resolve, that action will not affect those targets. This remains true even if they become illegal, then return to being legal. [JA, 15 June 2004; 22 June 2004]
Does this me, that the targets are constantly checked, if they are legal from step 2 Targeting till after step 3 Paying Cost?
A: Yes. Martin Lund, "Rules for 2 July 2004", 2 Jul 2004 - Q: Player A got Taneji, Player B another Peep, Player A wants to play a Storm Heart. After "Pay Costs" the action counts as "succesfully played" (Shadowed Tower's Trigger), so Taneji is allowed to shuffle Strom Heart back into the Fate Deck, right?
A: Sure Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 June 2004", 15 Jun 2004 - Q: Otomo Taneji has 2 Kuroiban Advisors attached to him. He issues a Storm Heart challenge to a dishonored Akodo Ieshige (or any bloodspeaker with chi < 5). When the duel begins, I bow both advisors to give Ieshige -4C and kill him. Is it correct to say that Taneji will not be dishonored because the duel ended without resolution?
A: Yes, the duel does not have two participants, and thusly can not determine a winner or loser to affect in any way. Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 May 2004", 8 May 2004 - Q: When is an action considered to have been played? This is in reference to Shosuro Mikado/Shadowed Tower and Storm Heart. If I use Storm Heart, do I use Mikado's/ST's reaction before or after the duel resolves?
A: After all the targeting and cost payments and Reactions they trigger, but before you resolve any effects of the Action. Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 April 2004", 2 May 2004 - Q: A rule question:
My opponent use the ability of the Underhand of the Emperor to search for a Storm Heart.
I react to the discarding of the Imperial Favor with Confusion at Court. The card is not searched.
after, my opponent lobbies for the Favor, and he wants to use the Underhand.
Q: Can my opponent name Storm Heart again?
A: Currently (apparently), naming the card is part of the cost, so the answer is "no".
Upcoming errata for the Underhand of the Emperor is that it read, "Discard the Imperial Favor TO name a Political Action card". Once Hidden City releases, the answer will be "yes". Jeff Alexander, "rules for 12 March 2004", 13 Mar 2004 - Q: So I'm trying to wrap my head around exactly what happens if Soshi Tabito Storm Heart's a non-Shadowlands, dishonored Personality with 1 printed Personal Honor or more. The part that is getting me is the order of effects/reactions to the end of the duel. Now, as I understand it, the active player can choose the order of simultaneous effects. So, is the following a legal progression from Tabito's Storm Heart...
1. Assume dishonored opponent realizes futility, and doesn't have any tricks. Duel moves to resolution. I am assuming that Tabito winning, and his opponant losing are simultaneous.
A: Yes. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 13th, 2003", 13 Aug 2003 - Q: 2. Active player, since win/loss simultaneous, applies effects of winning first. He is dishonored (since Storm Heart doesn't say *after* the duel, assume this happens immediately)
A: Apply effects of the duel in the order that they are printed on the card. First, you destroy the loser. *Then* you Dishonor the winner if the loser wasn't Shadowlands. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 13th, 2003", 13 Aug 2003 - Q: Let's say I have Doji Konishiko in play, and she's "learned" the action on Storm Heart. If I Egg her...
A: The Egg copy has the action on Storm Heart.
B: The Egg copy doesn't have the action on Storm Heart, but I can use the reaction to give the Egg copy an ability.
C: The Egg copy has the action on Storm Heart, AND I can use the reaction to give the Egg copy a second ability.
A: C.
Gaining the ability is a permanent change to the card, so Egg copies that change.
However, the Egg itself has not used that ability this game, and thusly has not reached the max # of uses (once per game) yet. Martin Lund, "Doji Konishiko and The Egg of P'an Ku", 11 Apr 2005 - Q: Sorry I may have misunderstood Storm Heart this whole time.
"DISHONOR THE WINNER IF THE LOSER IS NOT SHADOWLANDS" ~ this is how I win since I am not challenging a shadowlands personality. "Dishonorable personalities cannot refuse" ~ dishonorable personalites can never increase their personal honor over zero unless there is some sort of exception.
A: Your initial question did not mention Storm Heart.
(Replying to a player: "Is this enough context to answer though? I did search for the answer and there were 0 queries about storm heart, which surprised me.") Yeah, I can put it together now. Storm Heart was the missing piece. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 5 Jul 2026
