Rules Q&A
- Q: So I was thinking about this situation and I wanted to be sure I got things right.
Bayushi Hisoka targets a player and destroys a province granting that player a once per turn province refill face up until the end of the game. Said player has no Dynasty cards in his Dynasty deck, and is resolving an Event during his Event's Phase from Province 1. Opponent plays Subversive influence to prevent the event from resolving.
I believe the correct sequence from this point is this.
Subversive Influence shuffles the event into the Players Dynasty Deck. -->Event is Face down and out of play so: Subversive Influnce Effect stops affecting that card, instantaneous effect + tracking rule. Province 1 is Immediately refilled from Dynasty Deck, and per Hisoka's ongoing effect for the player, may be refilled face up, assuming it is. Sequence of Play now says go back to step B, which will again try to resolve the event.
Rules Say this...
Sequence of Play for Events F. a. If the province contains a different face-up card than the one dealt with in the previous steps B through E (for example, if the previous card was discarded and the province refilled face-up), return to step B and follow steps B through F for the new card.
While logically the Event is the same card. That card went Face down and out of play, so according to....
The Tracking Rule “Memory” of the status of individual cards ends when the card enters a deck or a hand, or otherwise becomes both face-down and out of play (such as after a card in the deck or hand is shown). This includes dishonorable status, ongoing effects, and whether or not an ability has been used.
EXCEPTION 3: If an effect does not distinguish between individual copies of a card, its “memory” remains even when the card is both face-down and out of play.
Clearly the Rule in F. a. is looking for the specific card (distinguishes the individual copy), thus the exception does not apply, and you start back at B. As is the Effect of Subversive Influence.
So the Event resolves again. Am I right?
A: Yes. Alex Jones, "Subversive Influence vs Bayushi Hisoka and Event Resolution", 28 Apr 2011 - Q: Hello,
I'm sorry if the response in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=89992 was meant to be clear, but I'm still not sure what the answer to that question is.
The rules quote: "When a card leaves a province and the province then holds fewer than its maximum number of cards, effects triggered by the card leaving the Province or entering play resolve first (including effects of Events that resolved from that Province). Then, if the Province still holds fewer than its maximum number of cards, it is refilled with a face-down Dynasty card..."
I've bolded the parts where it says what resolves before refilling. But Subversive Influence doesn't seem to be an "effect triggered by the card leaving the province or entering play", nor does the event ever resolve. I guess I'm confused at what point in the process of "normal event resolution" does the timing for Subversive Influence happen?
A: Subversive Influence's trigger is "Before an event resolves", so the shuffling occurs as an effect caused by the Event leaving the Province. After that, you refill. Alex Jones, "Subversive Influence", 14 Apr 2011 - Q: Let's say that I use Subversive Influence's reaction on an event. Will the province that the event was in get refilled before or after the event gets shuffled back into the deck?
A: Areas of the game, Provinces: When a card leaves a province and the province then holds fewer than its maximum number of cards, effects triggered by the card leaving the Province or entering play resolve first (including effects of Events that resolved from that Province). Then, if the Province still holds fewer than its maximum number of cards, it is refilled with a face-down Dynasty card from the top of the Province’s owner’s deck, unless something else has refilled it (see Refill). Alex Jones, "Subversive Influence", 12 Apr 2011 - Q: I tried to argue that the event would get reshuffled and immediately refill the 2nd province, because the first province is still being "resolved" (that is, we are still in the process of resolving Subversive Influence).
A: Herein lies your mistake. Subversive Influence stopped the Event from resolving at all. The first province is not still "being resolved" or in any other sort of "state of grace" when your Event gets reshuffled into the deck. It is the first empty province as soon as your deck has more cards to refill it and therefore it gets refilled first. Brook Cunningham, "Subversive Influence and 0 cards left in deck", 28 Feb 2011 - Q: If Jimen's Decree resolves, making the next event not happen, and then your opponent flips lets say, war of dark fire... Can you choose to use subversive influence as your first "reaction" to before the event resolves to save your Jimen's Decree for an event you'd rather have it "kill"?
A: No. Reactions always come last in timing conflicts. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Resolvin ... _conflicts Zen Faulkes, "Subversive Influence + Jimen's Decree", 21 Feb 2011
