Rules Q&A
- Q: 1.) What happens when you wedge someone and they're moved to another battle by someone elses card effect?
A: Wedge continues to do exactly what it says it does. You still can't target cards in that unit. It won't double their force during resolution since the unit isn't "still in this army." It will kill them after the battle. Martin Lund, "Rules for 15 December 2004", 22 Dec 2004 - Q: Superior Stance: Apologies if this has been asked, i didnt see any FAQ on it 1.) It was argued back and forth, "negate all other effects of refusing" Does this mean it negates , for example, being dishonored and losing 7 honor, or does it negate the effects of refusing period, making the personality accept the challenge.
A: It negates the effects of refusing, not the refusing itself. With Iaijutsu Challenge, you don't lose 7 honor, the personality isn't dishonored. Martin Lund, "Rules for 15 December 2004", 22 Dec 2004 - Q: Correct me if I'm wrong here, but a Shadowlands player cannot refuse Kakita Mai, but can refuse Iajutsu Challenge right? So if Kakita Mai uses her action to start a challenge, and the player refuses, if Kakita Mai's player plays Superior Stance, does opponent still lose the 4 honor since that honor loss has been ruled a cost of refusing?
A: Sure. The 4-point loss is a Cost of Refusing, not an Effect of Refusing. Martin Lund, "Rules for 25 June 2004", 28 Jun 2004 - Q: The Question is does the "negate all other effects of refusing" include canceling the duel or not? I can see it both ways and am just looking for a strait answer.
A: You're confusing things. Refusing the Challenge does not Cancel anything. Duels aren't created unless the Challenge is accepted. Nothing is canceled. The Duel simply is not created.
No, Superior Stance gives you your honor and eliminates things like the "dishonor and lose 7 honor" part of Iaijutsu Challenge or the card-draw of Iaijutsu Lesson. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 June 2004", 6 Jun 2004 - Q: The cards at the crux of the issue are Facing Your Devils and Superior Stance. The short version of the question is this: is the discarding of cards to refuse Facing Your Devils a cost or an effect of the refusal?
A: Cost. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for July 15th, 2003", 15 Jul 2003 - Q: Superior Stance - Is it an effect of refusing that the duel is canceled.
The word "cancel" is not used in the text you typed. So the duel isn't canceled.
I'm not sure what you are trying to say here Zen.
A: Yeah, I get that a lot. ;)
"Cancel" has a very specific meaning in L5R, defined in the rulebook. Neither refusal nor Superior Stance "cancels" a duel. The duel doesn't happen, is prevented, whatever -- but it isn't "canceled." Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 21 April 2003", 22 Apr 2003 - Q: Superior Stance - Is it an effect of refusing that the duel is canceled.
A: The word "cancel" is not used in the text you typed. So the duel isn't canceled. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 20 April 2003", 20 Apr 2003
