Rules Q&A
- Q: B. No, because the cost is actually being generated by the Fortified Camp's Reaction, much the way you cannot use the benefit of a Supply Outpost trait benefit when paying for a personality without gaining honor to attach a Warden for 2 honor.
A: ...because the issue with Supply Outpost's trait versus Wardens' Reaction is that both effects attach the card; you have to choose to do one or the other. Then, after it's attached, you can't have another effect try to attach it again because it's no longer in your hand (as each effect requires).
Conversely, Fortified Camp's effect attaches, and Chinatsu produces Gold. These effects don't conflict or invalidate one another; they actually go quite well together. Brook Cunningham, "Fortified Camp + Isawa Chinatsu", 20 Feb 2009 - Q: Just for official confirmation, this (supply outpost + phial of poison) also removes any "Lose X honor" or other 'entering play' traits on personalities before they are considered to enter play, correct?
A: Well, it is technically AFTER they've entered play, not before.
But, the answer is still "Yes" to this:
Supply Outpost's delayed effect will always occur before triggered traits. So, if you use it to attach a Phial of Poison, you will remove all a Personality's traits (in Akuma no Oni's case, his triggered Honor Loss, his triggered province destruction, his triggered double-province kill, AND his bowing and targeting restrictions) before they can trigger. So, the ones triggered after entering play won't, as per:
http://rules.l5r.com/Timing: "The order of resolution means that effects that come first, due to the above order or the active player’s decision, can negate, alter or render irrelevant effects that come later." Brook Cunningham, "Akuma no Oni, Phial of Poison and Supply Outpost", 11 Oct 2008 - Q: If I have Supply Outpost (unbowed and in play), and desire to buy Akuma no Oni from one of my provinces and have Phial of Poison in my hand, can I bring in Akuma no Oni and choose the order of the triggered traits such that I trigger the supply outpost first attach phial of poison to Akuma no Oni?
A: No. Supply Outpost's attachment effect is a delayed effect, not a triggered trait. You cannot choose the order because a delayed effect ALWAYS occurs before a triggered trait (Citation). Brook Cunningham, "Akuma no Oni, Phial of Poison and Supply Outpost", 10 Oct 2008 - Q: ...my question is what happens now? Do i still lose a province due to Akuma no Oni's trait since I choose to resolve the trait after the supply outpost or does the trait get negated by the phial of poison? Thanks.
A: Again, you're not choosing between Akuma's trait and the Outpost's effect; the latter will always occur first. But, if you do choose to attach Phial of Poison (you could choose to attach something different or nothing at all, due to Supply Outpost's "may" wording), then Akuma's traits would be removed before they could trigger, and your Province would be saved. Brook Cunningham, "Akuma no Oni, Phial of Poison and Supply Outpost", 10 Oct 2008 - Q: Firstly, can I use Isawa Chinatsu's reaction in conjunction with Supply Outpost to attach a five gold Spell to Chinastu when she is bought in the Dynasty Phase?
A: Yes. Alex Jones, "Isawa Chinatsu and Supply Outpost", 6 Oct 2008 - Q: Secondly, can I use Supply Outpost to attach Seeking the Way (This spell cannot have its gold cost reduced) if I pay the extra Gold?
A: It's not really "extra" gold, but yes, if you pay the gold cost of Seeking the Way you will successfully attach it. Alex Jones, "Isawa Chinatsu and Supply Outpost", 6 Oct 2008 - Q: I apologize if this is asked and answered because I notice someone just updated the glossary entry for "gold cost" last week.
1. I buy my Hida Koun (exp 5), gold cost 15 using a supply outpost AND Glory of the shogun is in play. I attach an Iron Tesubo (paying the additional two gold). Do I get to draw a card?
2. If yes to #1, in the same scenerio, but I attach a ceremonial armor for free with the outpost, do I get to draw a card?
Shogun says "after it attaches" so it would seem that both q's would have yes answers, according to the first section of the rules entry for "gold cost," but I am, in fact, stupid, and it may check the transitional gold cost when attaching and the card draw is the 'after' effect that is triggered. Thanks in advance. All pertinent card info below.
Supply outpost: Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. If this pays for a Personality, you may attach a Follower, Item, or Spell to him from your hand after he enters in play, reducing its Gold cost by 3 until it attaches.
Glory of the Shogun: Equipping attachments is a Battle/Open action for all players. After the first time each turn each player attaches a card with a Gold Cost of 5 or greater from his hand, he may draw a card. These effects last until the end of the game.
Ceremonial armor: Attaches to a Personality with a Gold Cost of 9 or greater for 4 less Gold.
A: Following the current glossary entry (http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_G), Glory of the Shogun looks for the stat, not the amount paid. Changing the Gold cost (lowercase cost = temporary) does not change the Gold Cost (uppercase Cost = stat). Zen Faulkes, "Supply Outpost with Glory of the Shogun; Gold Costs", 6 Mar 2008 - Q: Wardens Text Scout Ranged Attacks targeting cards in this unit have -3 strength. Reaction : If this card is in your hand, after you bring a Personality into play without gaining Honor: Attach this card to him (paying all costs). Gain 2 Honor. Battle : Once per battle: Reduce the Force of a target Personality opposing this card by this Personality's Chi.
Supply Outpost Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. If this pays for a Personality, you may attach a Follower, Item, or Spell to him from your hand after he enters play, reducing its Gold Cost by 3 until it attaches.
Question:
Will you still able to gain 2 honor from Warden's reaction when using a Supply Outpost on putting out a peep? Need your great minds on this matter. Thank you very much in advance.
A: I did a Search of the CCG - Rules Forum for "wardens supply outpost" and found this for you: Wardens & Supply Outpost Martin Lund, "Supply outpost on Wardens", 4 Mar 2008 - Q: I announce I'm playing a Will, target a dead Samurai in my discard pile, and pay his gold cost using Supply Outpost.
May I use the Supply Outpost effect to attach a card from my hand to the resurrected samurai?
This rules question actually happened during the European Champs.
Will: Dark Virtue Battle: If there are any enemy units at the current battlefield, target a dead Samurai Personality you own: Bring him into play there, paying 2 less Gold and ignoring Honor Requirements.
Supply Outpost: Bow this card: Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. If this pays for a Personality, you may attach a Follower, Item, or Spell to him from your hand after he enters in play, reducing its Gold cost by 3 until it attaches.
A: Though Will has a * in its Gold Coin, the cost of the Personality is the cost of the Personality, not Will.
Consequently, Supply Outpost is paying for the Personality, and will give you the change to attach something at reduced cost. Martin Lund, "Will + Supply Outpost", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=62144
I'm just making sure I understand what this ruling on the "combo" means, and why it's like that. I'm leaning slightly toward Guess #2, but I thought I ought to make sure.
Let's pretend it's the same set up, Let's also pretend instead of a 4 gold follower, it is a 7 gold follower.
After Supply Outpost reduces its cost by 3, can I then reduce the remaining 4 down to 2?
Guess #1: No, because supply outpost has already attached the card and thus you cannot react to it having no legal target.
Guess #2: Yes, the remaining cost is 4, and shinsei's last hope would reduce it by 2 to a minimum of 1, so you would still have to pay 2 gold. In the previous set up the 4 gold follower was already 1 gold (after Supply Outpost's reduction) it could not have been reduce further from that point, or retroactively (as you cannot react during effects, only after costs and then after effects) to 2 effectively making the folower reduced to 0 gold cost in that example.
A: Using Supply Outpost, then Shinsei's Last Hope, is fine. Obviously, cost can't go below 1 in that case. Zen Faulkes, "Reducing Costs #2", 28 Sep 2007 - Q: Shinsei's Last Hope + Supply Outpost: A personality in a province, a random 4 cost follower in my hand, and sufficient gold to pay for the personality. (C)an I use the Shinsei's Last Hope to reduce the cost to 2 and then claim the 3 gold reduction from Supply outpost(?)
A: No. The trigger for Supply Outpost is before Shinsei's Last Hope and must always be played first. Zen Faulkes, "Reducing costs", 28 Sep 2007 - Q: I bow 2 supply outpost (and some other stuff) to bring in a personality, can I then use the supply outposts to reduce the cost of an item by a total of 6gp?
A: No. Each cards says, "attach a Follower, Item or Spell." You can get two attachments for less, but not one. Zen Faulkes, "2x Supply Outpost = -6gp?", 16 Sep 2007 - Q: Let's say I buy a personality using 2 Supply Outpots.
With first Supply Outpost, I attach my first Brother in Arms.
Can I react with Brother in Arms, search for a Second one, and attach it with the Second Supply Outpost to the same personality?
A: Yes. The first supply outpost delayed effect triggers, you attach Brothers in Arms, resolve optional reaction to Brothers in Arms entering play, resolve second supply outpost delayed effect. Chris Fuchs, "Supply Outpost x2 + Brother in Arms", 29 Aug 2007 - Q: Can the following abilities be used to attach the same item, thus having a reduced cost and drawing a card?
Three Man Alliance Plain - "Reaction: After one of your Personalities enters play, bow this card: Target him. Attach a card to him from your hand (paying all costs). If he attached a card, draw a card. "
Supply Outpost - "Bow this card: Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. If this pays for a Personality, you may attach a Follower, Item, or Spell to him from your hand after he enters in play, reducing its Gold cost by 3 until it attaches."
A: No. You resolve one or the other. By resolving one, you've put the card in play. That means the other one won't have anything to do.
You can see another recent example here. Martin Lund, "Supply Outpost & Three Man Alliance Plain", 8 Aug 2007 - Q: Was wondering how the following two cards mesh, a player wants to use supply outpost to attach wardens after a personality enters play reducing the gold cost and gain honor for doing so, however by my reading of wardens the honor gain only occurs if they are attached by their own reaction and not the effect from supply outpost. Thus requiring him to pay their gold cost normally if he wants the honor.
Does the honor gain occur if attached via the outpost? Or only when brought into play via the text on wardens? (requiring their gold cost be paid without reduction)
Supply Outpost: Bow this card: Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. If this pays for a Personality, you may attach a Follower, Item, or Spell to him from your hand after he enters in play, reducing its Gold cost by 3 until it attaches.
Wardens Reaction: If this card is in your hand, after you bring a Personality into play without gaining Honor: Attach this card to him (paying all costs). Gain 2 Honor.
A: They don't mesh well. You resolve one or the other completely. Either you use the triggered effect and put him into play for 0G (at which point he's not in your hand so you can't use the Reaction), or you use the Reaction and put him into play, gaining honor (at which point he's not in your hand so reducing his Gold Cost and playing his is out of the question). Martin Lund, "Supply Outpost & Wardens", 8 Aug 2007 - Q: Can Supply Outpost combine with Three Man Alliance Plain for a single attachment on a Personality coming into play(?)
A: No. They're two separate effects. Zen Faulkes, "Supply Outpost + Three Man Alliance Plain", 25 Jun 2007 - Q: Can Supply Outpost be used cumulatively, in that, can I use two Supply Outposts to reduce the cost of a follower by six gold, or use two to buy two followers for a single Personality? And can I use Supply Outpost with Shiro No Yojin in the same fashion?
A: No. Each one is a separate effect. You can get sevearal slightly cheaper attachments, but not one very cheap attachment. Zen Faulkes, "Supply Outpost + Supply Outpost + Shiro No Yojin", 19 Nov 2005
