Rules Q&A
- Q: And what about Suspicions? Can I hit that every turn with Imperial Messenger, or just the turn it shows up, or not at all?
A: Events are not played. They do not enter play unless the Event itself says so (and very, very few of them do). Imperial Messenger typically cannot be used on one. It cannot be used on Suspicions. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 May 2003", 9 May 2003 - Q: What about the example of Suspicions and Lies, Lies, Lies?
A: Having Suspicions in effect would *not* prevent a player from using Lies, Lies, Lies... because:
1. Suspicions does not stay in play (card text, see my previous rulings here)
2. Lies, Lies, Lies... only cares about cards you *currently* control. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 21 April 2003", 22 Apr 2003 - Q: 3) A friend tried a combo on me a while ago where he bowed a Diplomatic Apprentice that was attached to Doji Nagori to increase an honor loss I was taking from Suspicions, then bowed that same Nagori to increase the same loss again. I went with it, but it seems to me that Nagori's ability had already been used, the cost was just changed. I don't think it should have worked. Am I wrong?
A: You are not wrong. Also from the FAQ:
] Q: If I put a Diplomatic Apprentice on Shosuro Yasuko, can I bow the ] Apprentice and her together to stop two units from attacking? ] ] A: No. The rulebook says each printed instance of a Reaction can ] only be used once per trigger, and Yasuko's trigger is the ] declaration of an attack. That means each time someone announces an ] attack, each Yasuko's ability can be used once and once only. The ] Diplomatic Apprentice doesn't change that; even if you bow the ] Apprentice instead of Yasuko, it's still Yasuko's ability being ] used. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 February 2003", 26 Feb 2003 - Q: Another one for you. If I'm playing SLH(or any other) in a 4 player multi and suspicions goes off, Suspicions: For the rest of the game, each player loses 1 Honor after each of your Events Phases. I get eliminated or bow out(quit) and I do have an events phase does the effect of this still work?
A: The effect still works, although you do not have an actual Events Phase. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 January 2003", 14 Jan 2003 - Q: when a shadowland stronghold says you are not allowed actions that cause unconditional honor loss, does this include events, like Suspicions ?
A: No. Events are not actions. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 September 2002", 26 Sep 2002 - Q: 1) If the SLH player uses For the Empire and wins the duel, can I winds truth away the 3 honor gain?
Assuming they had the Samurai and they challenged a Shadowlands Personality (because otherwise there is no honor gain to begin with), no. The gain anyone else would get does not exist for them, not even for a moment.
2) Against the SLH with Suspicions in play and Dojo Nagori, can I increase the honor loss with Nagori and gain the 1 honor for doing so?
There is no loss for them, so there is nothing for Nagori to react to.
Jeff, I don't mean to be rude, but doesn't this answer directly contradict what you're saying in part 1 above? In the above answer, you're saying that he CAN Wind's Truth the honor gain from a Shadowlands player's For The Empire, provided the SL player made the challenge with a samurai.
A: Read what I said again. Assuming the Shadowlands player is the one who controlled the Samurai, and he challenged someone else's Shadowlands Personality with that Samurai (and you have to assume that because For the Empire only produces Honor when the challenge is done in that direction, so challenging the other way makes the whole question moot), the gain that any other player would get does not exist for the Shadowlands player. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 June 2002", 5 Jun 2002 - Q: 2) Against the SLH with Suspicions in play and Dojo Nagori, can I increase the honor loss with Nagori and gain the 1 honor for doing so?
A: There is no loss for them, so there is nothing for Nagori to react to. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 June 2002", 4 Jun 2002 - Q: A couple of questions came up in a five way open game I was in last night.
1. Do the Ninjas loose the honor because of Suspicions?
A: Suspicions is a card. If it's someone else's Suspicions, you don't lose honor from it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 April 2002", 4 Apr 2002 - Q: 2. If the event Moon and Sun is revealed and I reshuffle Suspicions, and it comes up again will they loose two honor a turn?
A: Yes, in two separate 1-point losses. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 April 2002", 4 Apr 2002 - Q: My opponent has Doji Nagori and Suspicions in play. Can I play Defend Your Honor when Nagori bows and causes me an additional one-point Honor loss?
A: Nagori does not cause you a loss himself. He increases the loss that Suspicions causes you. You cannot play Defend Your Honor against his action. (You can't play it against Suspicions either, since that's not an action.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 March 2002", 19 Mar 2002 - Q: Are the following two scenarios legal plays?
1) Suspicions is in play. Three Doji Nagori are in play. Nagori has a Political Reaction which reads: "When another player gains or loses Honor, bow Nagori to increase the gain or loss by 1. Gain 1 Honor." Question: Can all three Nagoris react to the Suspicions event with the cumulative effect that the opponent loses 4 Honor and I gain a net of 2 Honor (after losing 1 for the event and gaining 1 for each of the three Nagoris)?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 February 2002", 5 Feb 2002 - Q: I have a 3 chi shugenja and a The Wind's Truth, Suspicions resolve, Nagori#1 reacts, Nagori#2 reacts....could I react to the 3 honor loss or my time is passed?...could Nagori#3 then reactto make me lose 1 honor?
A: Since both The Wind's Truth and Doji Nagori are used "when" another player gains Honor, it's possible to wait for two Nagoris to happen before casting Wind's Truth. If you've moved the loss away from yourself, Nagori #3 can't increase your loss by 1. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 February 2002", 5 Feb 2002 - Q: Heh heh heh. Evil thought... If you're playing Open, and Moon and Sun allows Suspicions to resolve a second time, then you can use Nagori + Diplomatic Apprentice. Nagori reacts and the Diplomatic Apprentice bows for one instance, and then Nagori reacts and bows for the second. Nasty.
A: Perfectly legal. Jeff Alexander, "post for 29 January 2002", 30 Jan 2002 - Q: If Nagori has the Diplomatic Apprentice attached to him, can he and the Apprentice bow to cause a 3 point honor loss from Suspicions? (1 from Suspicions, 1 from Nagori, 1 from the Apprentice)
A: Each printed Reaction is usable once per trigger. [AOF rulebook p. 48]. A Diplomatic Apprentice does not allow the same Political Reaction to be used multiple times against one singular circumstance. You have to use the Diplomat alone on the first trigger, then use the Personality (or another Diplomat) on another one later. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 January 2002", 29 Jan 2002 - Q: For the rest of the game, no player's Family Honor may rise over 5 pts. from what it was when the turn began.
which means if both Suspicians and In Time of War are in play you can regain the lost 1 honor and gain a further 5.
Correct.
;;;;;
Jeff, this only applies to the player who actually played Suspicions, correct? The other player(s) would not be able to gain 1+5 honor, since the 1 honor lost would be enforced before their turn(s) began.
A: That would be right, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 January 2002", 18 Jan 2002 - Q: Also, isn't Suspicions unusable by SLH?
A: Perfectly usable. It is not an action. (If there was a FAQ, some version of that question should go in it.) Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2-7 August 2001", 9 Aug 2001 - Q: a) Twisted Fate reads (even in Oracle) "Until your Events Phase three turns from now begins, there is an additional Action Phase each turn which occurs between the Dynasty and End Phases." There is no End Phase or Events Phase under Ivory rules, and this event does not have any information on how to resolve it (it does not have the usual clause given to most pre-Ivory events.) Do you: * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, there is an additional Action Phase each turn after the Dynasty Phase"? * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, until your turn three turns from now begins, there is an additional Action Phase each turn after the Dynasty Phase"? * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, nothing happens (discard this card)"? * the event stays in your province and must be discarded by the rulebook Dynasty Discard action? * something else?
b) Similarly, Suspicions reads (even in Oracle) "Until the game ends, before each of your Events Phases ends, each player in turn order starting with you loses 1 Honor." There is no Events Phase, and this event does not have any information on how to resolve it. Do you: * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, until the game ends, after you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, each player in turn order starting with you loses 1 Honor"? ** if so, do the honor losses trigger this turn? * play the event as "After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, nothing happens (discard this card)"? * the event stays in your province and must be discarded by the rulebook Dynasty Discard action? * something else?
c) In the L5R Legacy rules (on the Rules wiki), it is stated that "Regions normally enter play from Provinces during the Events Phase. They do not enter play just by being revealed in a Province at any other time." This is the only rule on Regions entering play I can find in any of the Legacy/BigDeck/etc format rules pages. There is no Events Phase. Do you: * attach regions as normal after the start-of-turn reveal? * attach regions whenever they flip? * the region stays in your province and must be discarded by the rulebook Dynasty Discard action? * something else?
d) Not that this will ever matter, but consider the card Peace Treaty. It reads "Limited: If there are more than two players, choose a player. He may choose to sign a a Peace Treaty with you. If he chose this, then until your next Events Phase begins, neither of you may declare an attack against, or ally against, the other. If he did not choose this, you gain 3 Honor and he loses 3 Honor." There is no Events Phase. Do you: * not get to attack _ever_ if this is chosen? * wait until start of turn? * something else?
(There may be some errors in the Oracle here. If they are changed as a result of this thread, please post something here so that I know.)
A: Not all cards in the Oracle have yet been converted to Ivory Edition templating. Until such time as they have, please use the ones that have, as well as the contemporary use of such cards, to extrapolate their proper use. If you and your opponent cannot agree upon what that is, the Tournament Judge has final say.
As for the Region Rules, I'll fix the discrepancy there post haste. Brook Cunningham, "Handling cards that refer to nonexistent phases", 3 Nov 2014
