Rules Q&A
- Q: Can I bow a holding/personality to produce gold for no reason at all? ( I know from the time that this was legal several arcs ago we cudn't, would just like a updated/current clarification on this.
Temple Fortress Temple • Castle After the first time each turn you bow this Holding, gain 1 Honor.
Also, Yoritomo Yusuke + Cautious Contemplation
Can you declare an action bow gold to produce gold, since the action has a gold cost, then opt not to pay the gold cost. Ie just to float gold.
Yoritomo Yusuke Tireless Open: Dishonor Yusuke to straighten him. (bow): Produce 2 Gold.
Cautious Contemplation Open **(pay gold symbol), : Straighten your target bowed Personality. If his last bowing was from another player's card effect and you paid two Gold for this action, draw a card, and you may target and discard a Kata.
PS: Are you also allowed to float more gold than you are suppose to. Ie: I bow all my gold so that an enemy contested port becomes useless.
I feel I know the answers to these but I just want to make sure... before I hit the kotei tables.
A: You must have some action announced in order to produce gold.
However, you can produce as much as you want, and you only PAY the amount equal to the cost of the action you're taking. If your first Limited action is to Equip a 2G follower, you may bow all of your holdings to add all of your gold to your pool, and then pay 2 of that gold for the Equip action. Jon Palmer, "How does floating gold work in Ivory. Temple Fortress", 5 Mar 2015 - Q: Tadanobu Sensei's trait prevents the Crane player from gaining Honor from Holdings. Does it also stop gains from the Temple Fortress' honor-gaining trait? It seems to me like it does, but I would like confirmation.
A: Yes, that is an honor gain from a holding.
If it was worded "from actions on holdings", Temple Fortress would work. Jon Palmer, "Tadanobu Sensei + Temple Fortress", 15 Feb 2015 - Q: Temple Fortress: After the first time each turn you bow this card: Gain 1 Honor.
Hachi's Revenge: Open: Target a non-Unique Holding: You blockade it. Bow it.
If I target an opponent's unbowed Temple Fortress with Hachi's Revenge, do they gain honor when it bows?
A: Your opponent will not gain the honor.
It is your action's effects that are bowing his Holding, regardless of who physically turns the card 90°. Ben Higgins, "Temple Fortress vs Hachi's Revenge", 28 Dec 2012 - Q: Hey guys,
I think I know the answer to this but I just wanted to ask to make sure!
In dynasty I am at -1 honour. I Proclaim a Rengetsu, but I use a Temple Fortress to pay for him entering play.
My opponent attempts to Rhetoric the gain, and I play Rhetoric to redirect back to me. My opponent wants to play Bad Kharma to negate MY Rhetoric. Am I at -1 honour or 0 honour when I try and Proclaim?
A: The gain from Temple Fortress triggered as soon as you bowed it, while you were paying for your Personality.
You can't Proclaim until after she enters play, which occurs after paying, so at that time you would be at 0 Family Honor, in your scenario. Brook Cunningham, "Temple Fortress + Proclaim", 4 Oct 2012 - Q: Can I pay for any action(personality, attachment, and stronghold actions with no gold cost) with Temple Fortress to gain honor from its bowing?
A: Costs and Restrictions, Gold Production: It is permitted to overpay a Gold cost by any amount, including producing Gold to overpay a Gold cost of zero on (for example) a Strategy card. It is not permitted to pay Gold to bring into play a card with no Gold cost stat (such as a Ring or Region), or for an action with no Gold cost on a non-Strategy card (such as a Personality or Follower). Alex Jones, "Temple Fortress and Overpaying", 22 Jun 2012 - Q: Hello. Issues like these have been discussed before, but not without the new rules, specifically the in-clan-ignore-honor-requirement rule. Would appreciate some new rulings.
1.) I am at 4 honor and would like to purchase an 8 gold personality with an honor requirement of 5. My only available holding is my 4 gold from my stronghold and my unbowed personality. Would i be able to purchase the personality? 2.) Same as 1, but i have plenty of gold. Can i declare that i am paying 2 extra gold to ignore the honor requirement, but as i bow the holding, i gain the 1 honor, then i can opt not to pay the additional 2 gold for ignoring honor requirement.
Temple Fortress Castle • Temple After the first time each turn you bow this card: Gain 1 Honor. Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold.
A: For question "1)", I assume you mean "unbowed Temple Fortress" rather than "unbowed Personality".
But the answer to both questions is, "No, you cannot do that."
The sequence to bring a Personality into play has not changed, and is still thus (from here):
"A. The personality enters a specially created entering-play area.
B. The personality’s Honor Requirement and other restrictions on its entering play are checked at this point and at no other time. Whether or not to apply Clan Allegiance (see below) is chosen at this time. If these conditions are not met, the Personality card returns to where it came from (shuffling the deck if it came directly from a deck search) and the sequence ends.
C. If requirements and restrictions were met in step B, the player pays the Personality’s Gold cost. Whether or not to apply Clan discount (see below) is chosen at this time. The player then pays any other costs of bringing the Personality into play. If costs are interfered with and not fully paid, the Personality card returns to where it came from and the sequence ends.
D. The entering-play area ceases to exist."
Checking Requirements and choosing to use Clan allegiance occur in Step B. Paying is in Step C. The Honor you gain from paying with Temple Fortress cannot and will not have any bearing upon the Requirements of the Personality for whom you are wishing to use it to pay. Brook Cunningham, "Temple Fortress and Honor Requirements", 22 May 2012 - Q: When a card enters play bowed, it is not considered to bow, because it was not in play as an unbowed card.
A: Because of this, Temple Fortress' trait does not trigger. Ben Higgins, "Temple Fortress entering play", 20 May 2012 - Q: [20f]
I feel like I'm going crazy trying to find this question that I know has been asked and answered in here
Can you "over pay" a 0gc (no gold cost listed) strategy?
(For example: can I announce [imperial summons], and "pay 2 gold using [temple fortress]" to gain honor?) (In addition, for this example, does that make 2g float for the phase?)
A: No. Sorry, I'm not by the CR currently to cite that, but I'm quite sure you can't.
I believe it came up in here most recently asking about creating a copy of a card with an Invest trait, and because you don't pay for the copy, there is no trigger/step in which you even have any option to pay, which is what causes Invest to trigger. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 28 Mar 2026 - Q: I have two questions: Does Temple Fortress give 1 honor on the turn it comes into play? Also, can Mark of Heaven's Favor target it even if it is in my province and not yet in play?
A: No, and no. 1. Entering play in a bowed state =/= bowing 2. Cards out of play cannot be targeted without explicit text allowing that. Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 12 Jun 2023
