Rules Q&A
- Q: 1) How does Stone Breaker interact with Temple of the Ninth Kami. If use the action on T9K and only have Stone Breaker in play, must they become dishonored? By accumulated rulings, wouldn't they have to become dishonored since it is known in advance that the option will fail?
A: Looks that way to me. Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 April 2004", 14 Apr 2004 - Q: If I am playing either the Spawning Grounds or Temple of the Ninth Kami can I use Eloquence to lobby for the favour if my wind is Daigotsu?
A: Yes (Black Heart of the Empire card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 29 November 2003, Part 2", 30 Nov 2003 - Q: Is this an intentional distinction/change, or is Zen confused? =p
A: I'm frequently confused. :) Seriously, though, I'm being forced to relearn the Diamond rules, just like everyone else. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 November 2003, Part 2", 11 Nov 2003 - Q: If [Temple of the Ninth Kami] targets a dishonored personality, is the personality able to refuse to issue the challenge again?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 November 2003, Part 2", 11 Nov 2003 - Q: if the Temple targets a bowed personality is that personality automatically dishonored due to the fact that bowed personalities can not issue challenges?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 November 2003", 10 Nov 2003 - Q: one of the Rules Junta stated that Purify could not straighten the Temple of the Ninth Kami, or the Temples of the Phoenix, since they are not holdings.
A: Keywords don't apply to strongholds (Gold Edition rulebook, page 33). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 October 2003", 13 Oct 2003 - Q: Can a Temple of the Ninth Kami player end his turn and search for gifts and favors and retrieve it from a face up province he has in play?
A: No (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 September 2003, Part 2", 13 Sep 2003 - Q: Can Purify be used to target the Temple of the Ninth Kami?
A: No (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 33). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 18 August 2003", 18 Aug 2003 - Q: If I use the Temple of the Ninth Kami and my opponent chooses to challenge Yokubo but I use Yokubo's Reaction to negate the challenge, is my opponents Personality dishonored since the challenge was negated?
A: Sure. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 8th, 2003", 8 Aug 2003 - Q: My opponent bows his Temple of the Ninth Kami and I challenge one of my opponents bowed Personalities he then plays Balance in Nothingness to cancel the action. Since the action was canceled and does not count as taken place do I get to challenge him again or is my Personality dishonored or since my Personality did challenge him nothing happens?
A: Everything that the Temple's action has not yet done is prevented from happening. You are not dishonored, there is no challenge, you may not try to challenge again. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 May 2003", 15 May 2003 - Q: 1) Can a dishonored personality choose not to challange anyone when targetted by The Temple of The Ninth Kami.
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 May 2003", 10 May 2003 - Q: With The Code of Bushido being played on a personality that has been targeted by the Temple, does it force them to challenge one of the personalites?
In fact, is it the same for something like Iaijutsu Challenge?
A: Yes and yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 April 2003", 29 Apr 2003 - Q: Can I play Oath of Fealty out of Temple of the Ninth Kami (or any Shadowlands stronghold, basically) to give a permanent +1F/+1C to my personalities in play (since they do not have my "clan alignment" per http://rules.l5r.com/Legacy_Format#Legacy_Clans)?
Temple of the Ninth Kami oracle text (there's a typo here btw): You will not gain or lose Honor. You may not take Political actions or actions that cause other players unconditional Honor losses. When paying for a Shadowlands card, bow this card: Produce 4 Gold. Limited: Any number of times per turn, if you control a Personality, bow this card, and target another player's Personality: The target's controller may choose for him duel any of your Personalities; if he did not, dishonor him. Destroy the duel's loser.
Oath of Fealty: Limited: Your Personalities "swear fealty" to you. Permanently give +1F/+1C and your Clan alignment to all your Personalities without your Clan alignment. Permanently remove all other Clan alignments from them, except Monk, Naga, Ninja, Ratling, or Spirit.
Thanks!
A: Oath of Fealty has always previously been ruled not to work for Shadowlands Horde players.
With this in mind, the text in the Oracle has been amended slightly, to work with the current Legacy Rules: Limited: Your Personalities "swear fealty" to you. Permanently give +1F/+1C and your Clan alignment to all your Personalities who would gain your Clan alignment. Permanently remove all other Clan alignments from them, except Monk, Naga, Ninja, Ratling, or Spirit.
Since Personalities will not gain the Clan Alignment "Shadowlands Horde", this will have no effect if you are a Shadowlands Horde player. Alex Jones, "Oath of Fealty out of SL stronghold", 13 Feb 2013 - Q: Hi, to ensure that I am properly reading Gifts and Favors and its intent I've come here =)
1. If on my first turn I bring out no holdings and my stronghold is unbowed I can bow my stronghold and grab a Gifts and Favors from my deck and put it into play.
2. Further Clarification: I do not need a "Gifts and Favors" in play to use the reaction on "Gifts and Favors"
3. The intent of this card is to lessen the chance that I get gold screwed in the first few turns and not draw a gold production holding.
4. I can use this effect with Temple of the Ninth Kami even though the stronghold produces no gold (one of my friends posed this question so I might as well repeat it).
Thank you in advance.
A: You've got the whole deal down. You use the ability of a Gifts and Favors in your deck / provinces, not in play, otherwise the whole idea of "Search your deck for this card" would be lost. Note how it says "this card," not "a copy of Gifts and Favors."
This ability tells you to make a play that would otherwise be illegal, so the card takes priority over the standard rules, as per the Cardinal Rules on page 34 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook.
Gifts and Favors brings itself into play via the ability. You do not have to pay its Gold Cost, so having a Stronghold that produces 0 Gold won't get in your way if you search it out of your deck + facedown provinces, rather than trying to purchase it regularly.
If you turn it face-up on your first turn, you may run into some problems if that was the only copy in your deck, though. Martin Lund, "Returning to game: Gifts and Favors Question", 25 Mar 2005 - Q: Can a dragon personnality [controlled by an Uso Sensei player - ZF] targeted by the Temple of the Ninth Kami issue the duel or does he become dishonored?
A: It can be issued, because Temple of the Ninth Kami does not force your Samurai to issue a challenge during your Action Phase. It's the Shadowlands player's Action Phase. Zen Faulkes, "Uso Sensei vs. Temple of the Ninth Kami", 17 Mar 2005
