Rulings
- You may only pick one card, regardless of how of the four qualify. [JA, 5 January 2005] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 87
- Erratum: Reads, “Temples of Gisei Toshi Temple • Unique Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. Limited: Bow this card: Name “Item”, “Follower”, or “Spell”. Look at the top 4 cards of your Fate deck. You may show one of those cards, then put it in your hand, if it is of the type you named.” [MRP, Samurai Edition, 25 July 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 160
Rules Q&A
- Q: The rules on making choices don't suggest that the "you may" construction continues across multiple effects without explicit text describing that relationship.
A: I beg to differ: A choice involving multiple effects following a "may" must be taken in an all-or-none fashion, unless they are phrased as alternatives to each other using "or."
Imperial Gift creates 4 effects: Gain 2 honour, search your deck for a card, show the card, put the card in your hand. None of these effects is optional. However, the search effect may fail, either because there are no items in your deck or because you choose not to find one, in which case the last two will also necessarily fail; if you successfully find an item, you *must* show it and you *must* put it in your hand.
Gisei Toshi creates three effects: Look at the top four cards, show one of them and put it in your hand ("Name a card type" is a choice, not an effect). The first effect is not optional, but the last two are as a pair, as described above. If you choose to apply the last two effects, you *must* show the card and you *must* put it in your hand. Alex Jones, "Re: Temples of Gisei Toshi - what does "you may" mean?", 5 Mar 2012 - Q: Hi, I have a question regarding the action on the Temples of Gisei Toshi. Do words "you may" refer only to showing the cards or also to putting them in my hand? In other words, If I chose to not showing the card I've just found, am I still allowed to put it in my hand or am I not?
Limited: Bow this card: Name "Follower", "Item", or "Spell". Look at the top four cards of your Fate deck. You may show one of those cards that is of the type you named, then put it in your hand.
A: The "you may" clause here applies to everything that comes after it. You may show the card and put it in your hand, or you may choose not to show a card, in which case you do not put anything in your hand. Jon Palmer, "Temples of Gisei Toshi - what does "you may" mean?", 4 Mar 2012 - Q: When you use the ability on Temples of Gisei Toshi or on K´mee to look at your fate deck.
a) if you find the desired card, do you shuffle the remaining cards?
b) if you don´t find the desired card, do you shuffle the remaining cards?
Thanks
A: The answer is "no" to both a) and b).
Both K'mee (Experienced 2, that is; please specify when asking questions in the Rules forum) and Temples of Gisei Toshi instruct you to "look" at the cards, not "search". Reshuffling is a mechanic specifically tied to "searching".
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_S#Search: "All effects that search decks for cards also shuffle the deck after the found card (if any) leaves the deck. If the card is not found, the deck is still shuffled immediately after searching. These rules does not apply to effects that look at cards in a deck without using the term “search.” See Glossary, Look....
...Effects that let you only "look" at certain cards in a deck (such as the top card, bottom card, or top five cards) are not considered to be "searching" the deck." Brook Cunningham, "Temples of gisei toshi and K´mee", 7 Oct 2008 - Q: Alright, let me put the card out there then ask the question;
Restoring the Doji Treasury:
Each player may search their dynasty deck for one gold-producing holding, lower its cost by three, and put it into play bowed, paying all remaining costs.
I merely ask, is there an order by which you search? For example, say I know mantis bob plays Temples of Gisei Toshi religiously, could I in fact search for it "first" even though we technically search at the same time? Mainly for the purposes of unique holdings.
A: No sequence is specified, so all the searched-for cards enter play simultaneously.
Using Holdings: Holdings entering play exist in an entering-play area while their requirements are checked and Gold Cost is paid.
This should, as for Personalities, include restrictions; the check for the presence of an in-play copy of the same Unique card is done for all the Holdings in the entering play area, and since there is no such card in play (the entering play area is out of play), the Holdings may all enter play. Alex Jones, "Restoring the Doji Treasury", 3 Sep 2008 - Q: what happens to the cards “Looked” at via Temples of Gisei Toshi? I saw a thread earlier that said “look” does not imply a shuffle of the deck, whereas “search” does, but this is looking at four cards (do they remain on top in their order?)
A: Definition of Look: "LOOK # To inspect a face–down card without showing it to anyone else or changing its position (for example, in a deck)." Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 5 Jun 2024
