Rules Q&A
- Q: "This happens before Honor gain". [D]oes this just mean that the personality comes out dishonored and the player doesn't get the chance to gain any honor from him?
A: That's what it means. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 November 2003, Part 2", 14 Nov 2003 - Q: I play The Company You Keep. My opponent decides to bring in people dishonored anyway.
Can I play Code of Bushido to cancel the action that would dishonor the personality or is coming into play not a trigger for the Code?
A: "Play this card when a Samurai takes an action, or creates an optional effect, that would dishonor him or her or cause his or her controller to lose Honor."
The dishonoring is caused by The Company You Keep, which is an action but is not taken by the Samurai. There is no honor loss involved, so, no trigger there either. Code of Bushido isn't legal. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 May 2003", 23 May 2003 - Q: Check Kolat Duplicate: "Honor is not gained when these personalities enter play." You gain nothing and he is not rehonoured. However, if he's entering play dishonoured for some other reason, for example, The Company You Keep, he will be rehonoured, I think.
A: A Personality who enters play dishonored still produces a 0-point gain if paid for in full, and would not be restored to honorable status. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 February 2003", 5 Feb 2003 - Q: The Company You Keep Political Open: Target a Personality controlled by the active player. Personalities brought into play by the active players this turn with a Personal Honor higher then the target's enter play dishonored. (This happens befor honor is gained.)
If I target a 0 Personal Honer personality my opponent controls during his turn, and he attacks with that personality and it is killed. Will any other personality he brings out with Personal Honor greater then 0 come out dishonored?
A: Yes. Personal Honor is compared at the time the new Personality is played. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 September 2002", 20 Sep 2002 - Q: Does this also mean this alters how "The Company You Keep" works?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 13 August 2002", 14 Aug 2002 - Q: 11. If I play The Company You Keep (Personalities brought into play by the active player this turn with a PH higher than the target's [family honor] enter play dishonored) - Do you still gain honor from them coming into play when paying full gold for them?
A: Yes! Unfortunately, that Honor is 0, since that's the Personal Honor of a Dishonored Personality. (Now there are times you want to get a bunch of 0-point honor gains, but usually you're better off buying everyone cheaply instead.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 April 2002 pt. 2", 8 Apr 2002 - Q: If this card is played on a dishonored personality and the personality is then re-honored (in the same turn of course), which Personal Honor is the trigger for dishonoring personalities brought into play?
Is it 0 because that was the personal honor of the personality targeted when CYK was played or is it whatever the personal honor of the targeted personality is at the dynasty phase?
A: Whatever it is when the new Personalities enter play. Jeff Alexander, "post for 31 January 2002", 1 Feb 2002 - Q: Just a follow-up question on this. Doesn't The Company You Keep create a delayed effect?
A: Yes. That's exactly why it uses "now" to indicate that the targeted Personality's current Personal Honour is used, rather than "then", which would mean his future Personal Honour when the delayed effect triggers. Alex Jones, "The Company You Keep", 22 May 2015 - Q: I have a doubt regarding the interaction between these two cards: "The Company You Keep Political Open: Target a Personality. Personalities his controller Recruits (this turn) with greater Personal Honor than the target has now are dishonored before they enter play."
"The Majestic Temple of the Phoenix Temple Dynasty,*: Recruit your target dead (not discarded) Phoenix Clan Personality; you may Proclaim him. Gain 1 Honor."
Player A uses "The Company You Keep" targetting Player B's personality with 0 PH. Player B then uses her "The Majestic Temple of the Phoenix" to Recruit a dead personality with 1 or more PH. How does this follow up? Am I correct in the following sequence?
1) The personality is paid and then dishonored. 2) The personality enters play and then can be proclaimed for zero since it is dishonored. 3) The personality is rehonored due to "The Majestic Temple of the Phoenix" honor gain because it was targeted by it; the 1 honor gain is thus prevented.
Thanks in advance for clarification.
A: Yes, your order is correct. Jon Palmer, "The Company You Keep vs The Majestic Temple of the Phoenix", 17 Mar 2015 - Q: I targetted a dishonored Personality with The Company You Keep
The Company You Keep: Political Open: Target a Personality. Personalities his controller Recruits (this turn) with greater Personal Honor than the target has now are dishonored before they enter play.
My opponent then rehonored that personality.
Will the comparison of the Personal Recruitment be after I played The Company You Keep (the target is dishonored,0PH so all personality recruited will be dishonored) or during recruitment ( the target is rehonored so he can proclaim personalities with equal or lower PH)
The timing of the word "now" is confusing to me. Thanks
A: "has now" means that the value you're checking against is set at the time The Company You Keep is played. If it later changes, that won't affect who is or isn't dishonored by The Company You Keep. Jon Palmer, "The Company You Keep", 5 Mar 2015 - Q: Yodo Sensei "After your action dishonors another player's Personality, gain 1 Honor."
The Company You Keep Political Open: Target a Personality. Personalities his controller Recruits (this turn) with greater Personal Honor than the target has now are dishonored before they enter play.
I gain 1 honor for each personality recruited (fulfilling the requirements for enter dishonored, obviously) that turn?
Thx in advance.
Sry for my english.
A: Yodo Sensei will gain you 1 honour for each Personality dishonoured by The Company You Keep. Alex Jones, "Yodo Sensei - Multiple dishonoring Actions", 24 Feb 2015 - Q: Hi
"The Company You Keep"
Political Open: Target a Personality. Personalities his controller Recruits (this turn) with greater Personal Honor than the target has now are dishonored before they enter play.
Acording to this post you can proclaim a personality affected by it and gain 0 honor, wiil the personality be re-honored by the proclaim also (and it that case that would not be any 0 honor gained) ?

"Words of Consecration"
After you Equip this Spell, if this Shugenja is Air, a target player gains or loses 1 Honor. Air Open: Bow this Shugenja to target another player's Personality. After the next time (this turn) the target assigns to attack you, gain 1 Honor, or 2 Honor if you control a Temple."
If the Shugenja performing this spell is dishonored will he re-honor if the condition apply or will the player gain the honor ? ----------------------------------------------
"Deliberations"
Battle, : Ranged Attack with strength equal to the amount you paid minus two.
Can this ranged attack be combined with cards from a unit or anything else ?
Thank you
A: 1. No rehonoring would occur. A loss or gain of 0 Honor is not considered a gain or loss, for the purposes of effects that are triggered by losing or gaining Honor, such as rehonoring.
2. No, sorry. There's no such thing as "performing" as a game term in Ivory Edition, and Honor gained from casting a Spell action is not one of the ways listed in the Comprehensive Rules to rehonor a Personality.
3. Not without the help of Gidayu Sensei or another such effect. Otherwise, only Ranged Attacks from cards in units may be combined (with other RAs in their own unit), and Deliberations is not in a unit. Brook Cunningham, "Dishonored questions", 16 Jun 2014 - Q: I had a person play The Company You Keep targeting a personality that I had discarded with 0 PH.
I had always assumed it had to target a personality in play but couldn't think of a good enough reason that she couldn't do that. Just wondering if there was one.
"Political Open: Target a Personality. Personalities his controller Recruits (this turn) with greater Personal Honor than the target has now are dishonored before they enter play."
A: There is a good reason:
Ivory Edition Comprehensive Rules, pg. 32: "Cards must be in play to be legal targets, unless the ability says or implies otherwise (for example, “Target a dead Personality” implies he is in the discard pile.)" Brook Cunningham, "The Company You Keep and discard pile", 27 Apr 2014
