Rules Q&A
- Q: Hitomi Nakuso Dragon Clan Shugenja. Tattooed Man. Nakuso will not join the Lion clan. Battle: Bow and destroy Nakuso to destroy one opposing Samurai with an equal or lower Chi.
Bayushi Kachiko Scorpion Clan Seductress. Experienced 3. Unique. Kachiko will only join a Scorpion player. Reaction: Discard a card from your hand when a Battle action is played during a battle Kachiko is in. Cancel the action.
If Nakuso uses his ability, and I use Kachiko's ability to cancel his action, what happens to Nakuso?
A: The cost of Nakusa's ability is bowing and destroying him. [GE p. 39] Costs are not refunded when an action is canceled. [GE p. 45] Nakusa stays dead. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30 May 2003", 3 Jun 2003 - Q: And, finally, how does Bayushi Kachiko (exp. 3) work? She cannot cancel a Shosuro Nishiko ability unless her controller have so cards in hand that the Nishiko's controller desist to do his action? Or Kachiko's controller can cancel one time and plays an action?
A: Nishiko's action is a Battle action, so Kachiko can cancel it each time it's used. Since discarding Nishiko is an effect, not a cost, of her action, she stays in play and can attempt her action again later that battle. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 18 September 2001", 19 Sep 2001 - Q: Well the scout says he can play before the defenders first battle action..But was there not just an argument that Purusha's action is not a battle action but a reaction before the battle actions or something because his reaction can not be cancled by Bayushi Kachiko exp 3 because it is not a battle action but a reaction?
A: Okay, here's the full on explanation. There are a number of cards with Reactions that trigger after a battle has been chosen to resolve, but before the defender gets to take his or her first normal battle action. All of those Reactions, *regardless of exact wording* trigger off of the same timing window. This is specifically to avoid worrying about the semantic differences that have been noted above. Purusha is a solid example of this. His ability reads:
Reaction: Immediately before the Defender takes the first action in this battle, bow Purusha for a Ranged 3 Attack.
Now, if the Defender has a Purusha, and wants to use him, he would (according to the literal text) enter a paradox where he's trying to take his first action (Purusha) as a Reaction triggering off of his first action (which would also be the same Purusha). So, in cases where you have a card that has 'before the battle' timing, ignore the precise wording, and remember that they all trigger off of an ephemeral moment immediately after the battle has been chosen to resolve, but before the Defender gets to take the first normal action of the battle. The player to the left of the active player gets to React first to the ephemeral moment, followed by the player to his left, and so on.
Now, to every rule, there must be an exception. And so, to the general rule presented above, I give you the exception. Cards with traits that allow you to do something before the Defenders first action will beat out cards with actions that let you do something before the Defenders first action. Traits beat Reactions. However, in cases where there are multiple 'before the battle' traits, resolve them in normal timing order (player to the left of active player first, and so on). So, a Scout in the attackers army will be able to play a Terrain before any other 'before the battle' Reactions can be played.
That's a reversal to what I said the other day about Purusha shooting the Scout before it could play a terrain, btw. As Zen reminded me, traits beat Reactions, so Scout beats Purusha.
Everyone happy, or do I have more questions coming? Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 23rd", 23 Jul 2001 - Q: Please, I need some help. Could Bayushi Kachiko (exp.3) cancel the ranged of a Purusha on the opposing army? That's it.
A: Nope. Purusha's action is a Reaction, and Kachiko ex3 can only cancel Battle actions. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 20th", 20 Jul 2001 - Q: Setting: A really big final battle, Unicorn vs Scorpion at the last Scorpion province.
The Players: Moto Gaheris experienced with attached scout and ancestral sword and a whole host of attacking Unicorns, Bayushi Kachiko exp 3 and many others defending.
Bayushi Kachiko exp3 Ho/Co/PH: -/10/2 Scorpion Clan Seductress. Experienced 3. Unique. Kachiko will only join a Scorpion player. Reaction: Discard a card from your hand when a Battle action is played during a battle Kachiko is in. Cancel the action.
Moto Gaheris exp Ho/Co/PH: -/15/2 Unicorn Clan Champion. Moto Clan Khan. Cavalry. Double Chi. Exp. Unique. Gaheris will only join an Unicorn player. Opposing players cannot play Action cards during the Battle Action Segment of a battle containing Gaheris unless the action removes Gaheris from battle.
Scout Ho/Co/PH: 0/1/- Cavalry. An Attacker with a Scout in his army may play a terrain card before the Defender performs his first battle action.
Situation:
The scout causes Deadly Terrain to be played. If this is a battle action, then Kachiko can cancel it and the Scorpions are saved (sending Gaheris home and exterminating the remaining Unicorn army). If it is not a Battle Action, and/or Kachiko cannot cancel it, the Scorpions are unable to simultaneously destroy the terrain and remove Gaheris from the battle and die horribly beneath the hooves of the rampaging Unicorn host. YOU make the call... who will reign triumphant and who will die ignominiously.
A: The terrain is still a Battle action. Scout changes when it's played but not what sort of action it is. Thus, Kachiko can be used to discard a Fate card to cancel it. (Using Kachiko's ability is not considered to be "playing an Action card," irrespective of the type of card discarded.) Jeff Alexander, "replies to 10-14 July 2001", 19 Jul 2001 - Q: This question maybe old, but I have just joined the list-serv. Let's say I am in a battle opposing Bayushi Kachiko, exp. 3. I play Block Supply Lines on Kachiko. If she cancels, and I play Fall on Your Knees in response, can she try to cancel the blocks supply lines again??
A: Currently, yes. This ruling is still under debate by the Rules Team, and may change. For the time being, though, a canceled action is still considered to have never taken place, and so a canceled Reaction would be able to be used again in response to the same trigger. Kachiko's controller would have to discard another card as a cost, though. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 26th", 27 Jan 2001
