- After you reveal cards in your Provinces at the start of your turn, if this Event is face-up in one of them, if any player has attached seven different Black Scrolls by title this game, he wins the game at the beginning of his next turn, and until the game ends, if any player ever has taken an action on 12 different Black Scrolls by title, that player wins the game immediately.

- When it resolves, every player who currently has seven or more Black Scrolls either currently attached or successfully cast earlier is flagged to win when his next turn starts. [FAQ] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 69
- Destroying some Scrolls before a player's turn won't stop him or her winning. [FAQ] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 69
- The easier win condition is checked once. If your count isn't up to seven when it resolves, you must use all twelve to win. [FAQ] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 69
- Spells must be cast successfully to be "used." ("Cast" isn't used because one Black Scroll isn't a Spell.) [JA] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 69
- Q: I'm really confused by The Darkest Magics. How does it work? A: When it resolves, every player who has a current grand total of seven or more distinct Black Scrolls either currently attached or successfully cast earlier that game is flagged to win when his next turn starts (destroying some Scrolls between now and then won't stop him winning). This easier win condition is only checked once. If your count isn't up to seven right then and there, you'll have to use all twelve to win. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 6
Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello. Just want to seek clarification on the 1st win condition on The Darkest Magics. Is that a continuing condition or do you have to fulfill that condition before the event appears?
I'm asking since the phrase, and until the end of the game appears after the 1st win condition is stated.
A: Yes, Shiwan is right; the "until the game ends" part only applies to using 12 and winning immediately, not the attaching 7 and winning at the start of your next turn. Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 11 Feb 2022
