Rules Q&A
- Q: If I use the ability on Private Shrine to grant +1F to three attacking Walking Dead, will that +1F bonus carry over if I move them into another battle with The Dead Do Not Rest?
A: Not only through to another battle, but until the end of the turn, like bonuses and other ongoing effects usually do. See http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Ongoing_effects Zen Faulkes, "Private Shrine + The Dead Do Not Rest", 14 Jun 2010 - Q: I want to make sure I understand the interactions here.
The Dead Do Not Rest (TDDNR) reads:
Battle: Bow your target Shugenja at any location: Move one to three target Undead Personalities in your home to the current battlefield, even if any of them have been in an attacking army at a battlefield during its battle's resolution. Straighten their units if they moved. Destroy them after this battle's resolution.
The cost makes the targeted Shugenja to be the performer. 1. Does TDDR allow the use of the Exception to the Rule of Presence, as it would "move one or more of his units" to the battlefield? 2. Does TDDR allow the use of the Exception to the Rule of Location? This exception requires that the action's "costs or effects say they are able to move [the targeted/performing unit] to the current battlefield." TDDNR would not normally allow the movement of the performing Shugenja; would that prevent the use of this exception? 3. Does the phrase "at any location" in the cost, as part of the targeting allows the player to ignore the Rule of Location? If so, does it apply to all its targets, or only the to performing Shugenja, yet allowing the "one to three target Undead Personalities in your home" to benefit from the Exception to the Rule of Location? 4. If the performing Shugenja is Undead, does the restriction on the rule of Location ("The player who is taking the action must take choices within the action, if possible, such that they do move [the targeted/performing unit] there") requires the performer to be one of the targets to move; or does the fact that the phrase "at any location" is in the cost, as part of the targeting allows the player to ignore said restriction on the performing Shugenja?
Thanks
A: 1. Yes. You do not need presence at the current Battlefield to play The Dead Do Not Rest 2. Yes. The phrase "at any location" allows for a non-Undead Shugenja to pay the costs of The Dead Do Note Rest, even if he is at a location other than the current battlefield, and even if the action will not move him to the current battlefield. 3. The Undead personalities targeted must be at home. That is stated in the targeting of the action. The "at any location" phrase only lets the Shugenja that pays the cost be at any location. 4. If you wish to move the Shugenja in (if the Shugenja is Undead) then the Shugenja must be at home per the targeting requirements of The Dead Do Not Rest. You are NOT required for the Shugenja to be one of your targets if he/she/it is Undead. Dan Jacobson, "The Dead Do Not Rest, Undead Shugenja and Presence/Location", 22 Apr 2010 - Q: I'm still a little unsure about how Furumaro interacts with delayed kill effects. I get that the action window closes for someone like Udo to be able to react off of Mountains of the Phoenix or The Dead Do Not Rest. The problem I'm having is that Furumaro doesn't refer to an actions resolution.
Furumaro has Reaction: Before an action destroys Furumaro: Negate his destruction.
Udo has Maho Reaction: After the resolution of an action that destroyed a Follower or Personality: Create a 2F/2C/0PH Shadowlands • Undead Personality at Udo's location
Is the resolution part implied and prevent Furumaro from using his react on delayed effects, or, can he react to a delayed kill effect, due to the omission of the 'after resolution?'
Thank you
A: The timing of the destruction effect (delayed or not) is irrelevant. Only the source is (is it from an action?).
Furumaro's Reaction works fine with delayed effects. Zen Faulkes, "Furumaro", 17 Mar 2010 - Q: My question is whether this fulfills the exceptions to Location and Presence if you are trying to move units into a battle at a province that you have no units at. I understand that the exception to the Rule of Presence seems to be fulfilled as you are moving one or more of your units into the battle. The rule of Location on the other hand I'm not quite so certain as the exception states "that unit" (full exception below) Now, my confusion is whether the wording saying that unit is meaning the targeted unit or the performing unit.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles Rule of Presence
The Rule of Presence: Battle actions can only be taken by a player who controls a unit at the current battlefield.
EXCEPTION: A player who controls no units at the current battlefield may take a Battle Action whose costs or effects say they are able to move one or more of his units there. The player must then make choices within the action, if possible, such that it does move one or more of his units there, fulfilling Presence.
The Rule of Location: This rule has two parts:
1. A card in a unit must be at the current battlefield to be targeted by a Battle action. 2. If a Battle action is on a card in a unit (a Personality or attachment in play), the unit must be at the current battlefield in order to take that action.
EXCEPTION: As with the Rule of Presence, a Battle action can target or be taken by a card in a unit at another location if its costs or effects say they are able to move that unit to the current battlefield. The player who is taking the action must take choices within the action, if possible, such that they do move that unit there.
