Rulings
- Because it affects "game state" rather than cards, its Open action cannot be used during battle, because it does not directly affect something in the current battle. [Reversal, ZF, web, 9 June 2005] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 70
Rules Q&A
- Q: 2/Can I use The Death of Ryoshun during a battle if I name a card that is in the current battle ? Does it satisfy the rule of relevance or not ?
A: It has an effect on that card in the battle - making any abilities it may have / obtain be unusable. That meets Relevance. Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 January 2005", 21 Jan 2005 - Q: Relevant card text:
Temple of Tsukune Temple After a Personality enters play from this province: Bow him. Reaction: After a non-Personality card (including this card) enters play from this province: Refill this province face-up.
Question 1: After Temple of Tsukune enters play and the province is refilled face-up, if the revealed card is an event, does it resolve immediately?
Question 2: On a subsequent turn, if an event resolves that "enters play in your home" or "remains in play in your home" (examples: The Death of Ryoshun, Commanding Favor), does it trigger the reaction?
Thank you!
A: Yes, to both questions.
Keep in mind that Events that don't specifically come into play via their own text do not trigger Temple to Tsukune's Reaction.
For more information, see here. Dan Jacobson, "Temple of Tsukune and Events", 2 Apr 2009 - Q: Stronghold Effects, targeting and costs applied to "cards" do not apply to a Stronghold unless they specifically mention the word "Stronghold." However, Strongholds count as cards in all other ways. Example: An effect that says: "Name a card. Abilities on cards with that title can not be used" does not apply to Strongholds because it is a non-Rules effect on the Stronghold. Example 2: A Reaction trigger states "After an effect from another player's card targets one of your cards:" This can be used in reaction to another player's Stronghold effect because the Stronghold's effects come from a card. It can also be used in reaction to another player targeting your Stronghold, because the reference itself is not an effect, targeting or cost.
The Death of Ryoshun This card remains in play in your home. Open: Discard this card: Name a card in play. Until the beginning of your next turn, actions on cards with that title may not be used.
Given the new rules regarding strongholds, can I name a stronghold when I use Death of Ryoshun?
A: No. Death of Ryoshun is nearly word-for-word the example used in the text you just posted of an ability that doesn't interact with a Stronghold. Martin Lund, "Death of Ryoshun and Strongholds", 14 Feb 2008 - Q: The Death of Ryoshun reads "This card remains in play in your home. Open: Discard this card: Name a card in play. Until the beginning of your next turn, actions on cards with that title may not be used."
Why doesn't the "until the begining of your next turn" imply it constantly checks card title?
A: Because it says "until". Those effects have one start and one stop point, and once they stop they stay done.
Effects that continually check use "while". Jeff Alexander, "death of ryoshun again", 5 Jun 2005 - Q: Another battle, I have in that battle only one Scorpion with a Troll War Band attached. Opponent has used the Death of Ryoshun, naming the Troll War Band. I can't pass, since the Troll War Band trait. I have no more actions to do, period, and I can't bow the Troll to perform one of his actions because of the Death. How can I solve this?
A: Play every action you legally can, then get on with the game. Zen Faulkes, "3 quick, fast questions:", 27 Mar 2005 - Q: One of my provinces was locked down due to Mantis raiding [Yoritomo Matsoru], meaning I couldn't discard cards from it or have them enter play. An event showed up in it. It specifically states in the Accumulated Rulings that events DO NOT enter play, but this was 'The Death of Ryoshun', which 'stays in play in your home'. As a result of the card's text, we assumed that this was an example of a card overriding the rules, so I left it in my province. Was this correct?
