Rules Q&A
- Q: I couldn't seem to add this to the end of my preious topic so I had to make a new one.
A: That's how it goes, homer. You should skim this; I worked really hard on it. Brook Cunningham, "Duty and The End Is Near.", 19 Apr 2009 - Q: Can Duty prevent destruction from The End is Near if I use determination? The end is near doesn't target, but can't have its effects negated which is what duty does.
A: Assuming the opposite scenario as Zen did above, perhaps you are using Determination with The End is Near rather than with Duty.
In that case, no, Duty can't save the Personality. Duty's negation will be negated by a Determination played along with The End Is Near; it doesn't matter that TEIN doesn't target. Brook Cunningham, "Duty and The End Is Near.", 19 Apr 2009 - Q: All this trouble to get rid of Pekkle!
A: Well, I'm glad you told me. Thus, I can also point out that if you kill a Pekkle no Oni with an action for which you also played a Determination, your opponent will NOT lose the 10 Honor. Sorry. (See here.) Brook Cunningham, "Duty and The End Is Near.", 19 Apr 2009 - Q: Can Duty prevent destruction from The End is Near if I use determination?
A: As was mentioned in the previous answer, you don't need Determination for Duty to prevent the destruction from The End is Near. Zen Faulkes, "Duty and The End Is Near.", 19 Apr 2009 - Q: Can Duty prevent destruction from The End is Near? I'm not sure if duty's effects are a substitution.
A: Yes, it can.
The End Is Near's prohibition on "substitutions" only applies to its costs (bowing the Shugenja and destroying the Spell), not its effects (blowing everyone up). Brook Cunningham, "Duty and The End Is Near.", 19 Apr 2009 - Q: "Limited: Bow this Shugenja and four other of your target Shugenja, such that each of the five has an element keyword that the others do not, and destroy this Spell: Destroy all Personalities in play"
The part in Question I emphasized. The way this reads doesn't seem to read that each Element has to be on each Personality, but that each Personality has to have -an- element the others do not. If you were to give the Naki Fire or Air, and then put them all next to him...would he not have an Elemental Keyword the others do not since it is not looking for any specific Keyword, but just making sure he at least has one that doesn't match the others?
A: If you give 3rd Naki "Fire", then Ochiai herself fails to meet the requirement.
I'm sorry you find it difficult to parse, but trust my assessment in the last post: 5 Shugenja, only one element keyword each, with each one different. Brook Cunningham, "The End is Near + Sharing Elemental keywords", 19 Mar 2009 - Q: There are several cards in Samurai edition that negate effects. In many cases, the effects might be part of a larger effect. For example, Knowledge or The End Is Near. On some of these below, it states that one should negate the movement or destruction.
Reaction: Twice per turn, before a unit moves: Negate the movement.
Reaction: Before a card effect would destroy Yaheiko: Negate the destruction.
Do these negations negate the entire named effect or merely to the target of effect being negated?
For Example: Bayushi Tsimaru moves home with Knowledge. He negates the movement. Does he stay and the targeted personality leave or do both stay at the battle?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Effects#Negating_effects
Knowledge has two separate movement effects. Negating one will not negate the other. Chris Fuchs, "Effect Negation", 30 Oct 2007 - Q: Regarding this thread...
I think the original poster was referring to the fact that one needs to have a Courtier in play to play Assigning Blame. If the End is Near does destroy all Personalities, I don't think anybody should be in a position to play Assigning Blame. Or did I miss something?
A: Ooops. I read "able" instead of "unable." Fixing. Zen Faulkes, "The End is Near and Assigning Blame", 15 Sep 2007 - Q: The End is Near: Under Samurai rules, is the only personality performing the action the Shugenja who has the spell attached?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "The End is Near", 15 Sep 2007 - Q: Assuming The End is Near resolves successfully and destroys all personalities in play, would my opponent be unable to react with Assigning Blame(?)
A: Correct. Not legal because there are no Personalities. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "The End is Near", 15 Sep 2007 - Q: The wording on this spell I find a little ambiguous:
"Bow this Shugenja and four others you control, each of whom has an Element Trait that the others do not"
Does the "each of whom" apply to the four others alone (thus making it possible for Isawa Sezaru or Isawa Kimi who used her reaction to cast or participate in the spell) or does this spell require all five element traits spread among all casters?
A: Mod reminder: Search before posting, please. Thanks!
