Rules Q&A
- Q: Does playing The Fires of War allow me play The Shadow's Lair's stronghold ability a second time within a single battle, per-battle; or does it merely indicate I can use it an additional time in a single turn because of the "once per battle" clause? In the latter case, that ability would be nearly pointless.
A: Please reference the search function before asking questions.
Fires of War will not allow The Shadow's Lair to use its ability multiple times. Jon Palmer, "The Shadow's Lair and Fires of War", 5 Jun 2012 - Q: This came up in a recent game for me. I didn't bring it up at the time, but I was thinking about it afterwards and I think a mistake was made. Here is the text on The Fires of War:
Battle/Open: You may use each ability on your Stronghold a second time this turn.
My understanding of this would be that after it is played, the opposing player gets to take an action before the stronghold's ability is used again because it does not say "Take an additional action to use each each ability on your Stronghold a second time this turn." Would this be correct?
A: Yes, you are correct. You cannot take the second action until your next normal opportunity. Jon Palmer, "The Fires of War", 22 Nov 2011 - Q: Does "The Fires of War" get around the "Can only use the same printed reaction once per trigger" rule?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Costs_and_restr ... ermissions: "A permission does not break rules that it doesn't specifically refer to." Zen Faulkes, "The Fires of War + Aramasu's Vigilance", 20 Mar 2011 - Q: Just to check my understanding - if you used Fires of War on Outsider Keep, and engaged at TWO battlefields over the course of the Battle phase, then I could react to each battle with Outsider Keep, right?
A: Yes, that's correct, because each battle engages separately (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Battles#B._Combat_Segment). Zen Faulkes, "The Fires of War + Last Step Castle", 23 Jan 2011 - Q: In response to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=88534
The comprehensive rules states: "A player may not use the same copy of a Reaction or triggered trait more than once to a single trigger."
Doesn't that mean you can't use Outsider Keep to react twice to the same engagement?
A: Whoops! You are correct. Thanks for the catch. Zen Faulkes, "The Fires of War + Last Step Castle", 22 Jan 2011 - Q: If my understanding is correct, Last Step Castle can gain 4 honor at the end of the turn if no provinces were destroyed, is that correct?
A: In combination with The Fires of War, yes. Zen Faulkes, "The Fires of War + Last Step Castle", 22 Jan 2011
