Rules Q&A
- Q: If I slap a Sword of Gales, which says "this personality has a mimimum chi equal to his printed chi" onto Bayushi Kamnan, am I still able to meet the cost of losing 2 chi to use Kamnan's ability?
A: If an effect prevents you from actually having Kamnan's Chi wind up 2 lower than where it was when you started to pay, you've failed to pay the cost. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 December 2004", 15 Dec 2004 - Q: Then why is it that Bayushi Kamnan exp can target cards not in play? He does not have text that explicitlly allows him to.
Limited: Once per turn, permanently lose two Chi to look at up to four face-down cards. You may then pay 2 Gold to discard one.
A: There's a rule that lets him. DE rulebook p. 73:
"An effect that targets a face-down card may target any such card, including one not in play."
-- Jeff Alexander Lead Designer, L5R CCG Alderac Entertainment Group Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 July 2004", 4 Aug 2004 - Q: Can I form Shining Example with ... Bayushi Kamnan (or any unique Samurai) with a samurai follower (say, for instance, a Veteran Samurai) attached..
A: Shining Examples says, "Formed by a Unique Samurai and a non-Unique Samurai."
It does not specify "Personality" anywhere. Samurai Followers count. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 May 2004", 15 May 2004 - Q: Can you pay 2 gold, 4 times to get rid of all 4? Or is that 2 for one a hard cap?
A: It is as hard a cap as only destroying One Unit as the cost of To Do What We Must to destroy One Unit as an effect.
When you play an ability, you only get to pay the cost and generate the effect once per play of the ability, unless it explicitly states otherwise. Martin Lund, "Rules for 16 and 17 April 2004", 18 Apr 2004 - Q: Especially since Chuda Agent/Bayushi Kamnan XP cannot give themselves -2C if they have 1 chi. If the perp doesn't survive the cost, and that cancels the cost being paid, I can see that.
A: Not so much cancels the cost. The cost isn't paid. The Chi stat didn't go down a full two points in the end. A stat-floor was imposed on it. The net result wasn't sufficient to pay the cost. Martin Lund, "Rules for 16 and 17 April 2004", 18 Apr 2004 - Q: Can Kamnan xp. look at (and therefore discard) the personalities attached to a Shiro Kitsuki player's porvinces.
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Shiro Kitsuki + Bayushi Kamnan", 7 May 2005 - Q: Is a player allowed to change the order of the face down cards that make up his hand? I seem to remember a ruling that you cannot change the order or position of any face down card unless a card effect does so. But there is nothing in the accumulated rulings. This is particulary relevant to Bayushi Kamnan xp:
Quote:
Scorpian Clan Samurai. Spy. Experienced. Unique Limited: Once per turn, permanently lose two Chi to look at up to four face-down cards. You may then pay 2 Gold to discard one.
For example can a player, given that he has already used Kamnan on his opponent's hand and that the opponent has drawn more cards in between the 2 uses of Kamnan, then ask to see card X and Y (that were previously shown to him) and the 2 new cards that were drawn?
A: Yes. (Edit: Correction.) Zen Faulkes, "Face down cards", 30 Mar 2005 - Q: A while back I posted asking if I could eclipse cards in provinces or in the hand. Zen pointed me to page 55 of the DE Rulebook, saying that cards in, "decks, provinces, discard piles, and hands are not considered 'in play'... and cannot normally be targeted or effected by other cards" (Rulebook 55)
Why then, can Bayushi Kamnan target facedown cards? He clearly does target them, since a player, "has to choose what it effects" (72). The same question goes for Tishi sensei. Why can these cards target out of play cards, while eclipse cannot, when the rules clearly do not allow it?
A: The rules do allow it. "An effect that targets a face-down card may target any such card, including one not in play." [DE p. 73]
Furthermore, Tishi Sensei is a simple matter of card text and would work even without that rule:
"Open: Once per turn, bow one of your Scorpion Clan Personalities to look at a number of face-down cards in an opponents hand or Provinces up to your Personalitys Chi."
When a card tells you to do something that is illegal by definition, such as "target a card in a Province", that is a clear case of card text overriding the rules -- in this example, the card explicitly makes itself an exception to the rule that only things in play can be targeted. Such an action does not need to carry extra verbiage such as "This may target a card in a Province even though that card is not in play." to make itself legal.
