- Bayushi Kaukatsu's ability is correct as printed. It is truly not Political. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, May 21, 2003, p. 14
Rules Q&A
- Q: So if the MTP doesn't keep the personalities' name and all traits go away, that means if i were to cover onto say Bayushi Kaukatsu, then he'd no longer be unique or Bayushi Kaukatsu, so my opponet could bring his into play? And could i bring out my exp. Bayushi Kaukatsu?
A: Yes. Martin Lund, "Rules for 24 September 2004", 27 Sep 2004 - Q: If a scorpion player has Bayushi Kaukatsu in play with a Diplomatic Apprentice on him, and causes himself an Honor loss of 4(from an honor loss that can be copied or redirected). Can he bow the apprentice to cause the opponent to lose the same 4 honor, and then bow Bayushi Kaukatsu to cause them to lose another 4 on top of the origional (making it a total of 8 honor loss for the scorpions opponent.)
A: No. You may play any given Reaction ability only once per trigger. You are using the Reaction ability on Kaukatsu's card whether you pay its cost by bowing the Diplomatic Apprentice or Kaukatsu himself. You may only use the ability once on the given honor loss, no matter how you pay the cost.
If you want to get multiple copies of the dishonor, you need a scheme to get multiple copies of Kaukatsu's ability, like playing the Egg of Pan-Ku. Martin Lund, "Rules for 17 May 2004", 19 May 2004 - Q: A player losing enough honor to lose the game will lose the game before he can share that loss with another player via Bayushi Kaukatsu. Is this a correct statement?
A: Yes. Kaukatsu copies the loss "after" it is suffered. [card text] Jeff Alexander, "rules for 17 March 2004", 18 Mar 2004 - Q: Is the reaction on Bayushi Kaukatsu considered to be modifying that honor loss?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 1 March 2004", 2 Mar 2004 - Q: If you have Bayushi Kaukatsu in play with 3 Diplomatic Apprentices attached and play a Kolat Assassin (which causes you to lose 4 honor when played), can you have Diplomatic Apprentice and the 3 DA all react to the honor loss & cause you and your opponent to lose 16 honor?
A: No (Diamond rules, pg. 75). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 30 November 2003", 1 Dec 2003 - Q: When basic Bayushi Kaukatsu copies your honor loss to another player, do all restrictions of that honor loss apply?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 November 2003", 23 Nov 2003 - Q: If I play petty insults, can I then bow Bayushi Kaukatsu to give them another honor loss if it will put them under there starting family honor?
A: No. "Your loss cannot be copied or modified" (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 17 October 2003, Part 3", 17 Oct 2003 - Q: I cause myself an honor loss. I bow Bayushi Kaukatsu to make my opponent share my honor loss. I bow a Master of the Tea Ceremony to reduce my honor loss.
A: Error! Master of the Tea Ceremony must be used before Bayushi Kaukatsu's Reaction (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 30 June 2003, Part 2", 1 Jul 2003 - Q: 2) If I'm loosing honor for whatever reason, and I bow Bayushi Kaukatsu to share it with my opponent, can I then The Wind's Truth the loss I recieved to him as well?
A: No. Wind's Truth is played "when" the loss happens. Kaukatsu is used "after". Wind's Truth must be played first, and if it is, you no longer suffer a loss that Kaukatsu can react to.
Kaukatsu's original version, Bayushi Goshiu, was deliberately worded in this way to render it impossible to "have your cake and eat it too" -- if you want to duplicate a loss, you have to actually suffer it yourself. This one card, printed way back in the Shadowlands expansion, is the primary reason that Reaction timing conflicts are resolved first by exact card text, THEN in some sort of turn order. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 August 2002", 11 Sep 2002 - Q: Only to clarify: Is legal kolat master a Bayushi Kaukatsu, then use his reaction to make the other player lose the same amount of Honor (=4).??
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 May 2002", 24 May 2002 - Q: Type Personality Title Bayushi Kaukatsu Rarity/Edition R Gold Faction Scorpion Text Scorpion Clan Diplomat * Soul of Bayushi Goshiu * Unique Reaction: After you lose Honor, bow Kaukatsu to make another player lose the same amount of Honor.

Is this ability political?
A: No. Kaukatsu was printed in Gold Edition. The old definition of Political does not apply to his action. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 February 2002", 8 Feb 2002 - Q: Second one
Bayushi Kaukatsu, soul of Goshiu It says, after you lose honor, make another player loose the same amout of honor. What s the source of the second honor loss, Kaukatsu himself or the original one? And can the loss be redonne say if my opponent got an egg of Pan Ku of my Kaukatsu/Goshiu?
A: Kaukatsu is the source of the second loss. Any number of Kaukatsu reactions can be taken after a single loss, if you have a way of putting multiple Kaukatsus into play or giving his ability to multiple Personalities. Your opponent may use his own Kaukatsu on a loss caused to him by your Kaukatsu. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 January 2002", 16 Jan 2002 - Q: a. If two Scorpion players were playing each other, can one bring out Bayushi Goshiu nonexp and the other bring out Bayushi Kaukatsu?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 October 2001", 8 Oct 2001 - Q: b. Can a Scorpion player have both Bayushi Kaukatsu and Bayushi Goshiu exp3 out at the same time?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 October 2001", 8 Oct 2001 - Q: Bayushi Paneki x4 and Bayushi Kaukatsu x2 are triggered traits
A: That's completely true. Paneki is not an appropriate example as he does not modify an Action's effects or costs at all. I've amended that statement. However, there are effects like those of the Crab's Strength, Kuni Daigo, or Shosuro Kamatari that all add additional costs to actions when you play them. Cards like "Deeds, Not Words" similarly add additional effects to actions whenever they resolve. You don't take any those additional costs or effects into consideration when you look for a card in a hand or discard pile with that particular cost or effect due to Blind Cards. Martin Lund, "Lies, Lies, Lies... + Spider's Lair", 1 May 2008 - Q: [OBH] Sorry if this has been answered. I tried searching for uniqueness, even in quotes "uniqueness," which usually works, but Discord search kept pulling up Unique instead getting 353 results over 15 pages.
Anyway.
Can I have have Bayushi Kaukatsu, Bayushi Kaukatsu exp, Bayushi Kaukatsu EXP 2, and Bayushi Kaukatsu EXP 3 all in play at the same time? Once upon a time I learned that you can only have one Unique personality in play regardless of EXP level, and it never really mattered because it happened so rarely in the block formats, but in Legacy its more of a thing. I see Deck Restriction 2: C, but I'd rather ask than be wrong.
A: No. You can only have 1 copy in play by title, regardless of Exp level. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 1 Jun 2026
