Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello, I have a question regarding the Khan's Gambits effect. Specifically the highlighted effect below.
the Khan's Gambit: Text Winter Terrain Battle: Your Personalities have +1F and cannot move home. You cannot use abilities on your cards at this battlefield.
My understanding is that this effect affects all personalities I control not just those at the current battlefield.
A: That's true. Brook Cunningham, "Question on The Khan's Gambit and its effects", 14 Jan 2009 - Q: after it is removed from play, (either through combat resolution of some other effect) would my personalities still have the +1 force and the inability to move home?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_T#Terrain: "If a Terrain leaves play, its ongoing effects end, and its delayed effects will no longer be applied. This is not negation of those effects (that is, even effects that can not be negated will be ended)." Brook Cunningham, "Question on The Khan's Gambit and its effects", 14 Jan 2009 - Q: Will this combo work?
A: I'm sorry, but this question is too vague to answer. I see three cards listed in your post, but there's nothing written there about how you're trying to make them interact. Brook Cunningham, "The Khan's Gambit and Recruiting Allies", 26 Apr 2008 - Q: "You cannot use abilities on your cards at this battlefield." sounds like it refers to personalities but the wording of Unshakable makes it iffy.
A: I can at least answer this. Your quoted part of The Khan's Gambit means that you cannot take any action (take an action = use an ability) that is on any of your cards at that Terrain's battlefield; not just Personalities, but your Attachments in that battlefield's army, too.
Again, though, I can't tell exactly what bearing you feel this has on Unshakable. It's not a card AT the battlefield (ie, in an army there), so it's not affected by Khan's Gambit's restriction. Brook Cunningham, "The Khan's Gambit and Recruiting Allies", 26 Apr 2008 - Q: If I play The Khan's Gambit, can I still use Mountain's Shadow Dojo?
A: The stronghold ability is not one of your "abilities on your cards at this battlefield." Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Mountain's Shadow Dojo and The Khan's Gambit", 8 Dec 2007 - Q: (S)ince I cannot move home, do I have to move to a different battle, or is that effect negated?
A: If you try to move home, it's negated. If you don't, it isn't. Your choice remains. Zen Faulkes, "Mountain's Shadow Dojo and The Khan's Gambit", 8 Dec 2007 - Q: (C)an Daidoji Yaichiro's reaction move him back(?)
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Mountain's Shadow Dojo and The Khan's Gambit", 8 Dec 2007 - Q: Shinjo Saihan's ability reads: Reaction: After any player announces a Terrain action: Give Saihan a +2F token. Force 4
Khan's Gambit reads: Winter Terrain Battle: Your Personalities have +1F and cannot move home. You cannot use abilities on your cards at this battlefield
If Shinjo Saihan is at the battle where the Khan's Gambit is to be played, does his ability trigger during the "Good Faith" segment, thus enabling him to gain the +2F token, or does the Khan's Gambit's effect trigger first?
A: The action is announced long before any of its effects begin to resolve. Chris Fuchs, "Shinjo Saihan + The Khan's Gambit", 29 Oct 2007 - Q: If I played The Khan's Gambit, can I use an ability on one of my personalities if I react with Determination?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_C#Cannot: "In card text, when referring to entering play, attaching, using a trait, or taking an action, 'cannot' and 'can only' are restrictions on the legality of that thing in the first place, not negation of its effects." No. Zen Faulkes, "The Khan's Gambit and Determination", 15 Oct 2007 - Q: Would you please tell me if Blanketed Forest and The Khan's Gambit satisfy the requirement of a Winter card?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Abilities: "An Action or Spell card inherits all keywords from all its abilities." Yes.
Added a pointer in the main Keywords section to the bit on Action and Spell cards. Zen Faulkes, "Yukari no Onna and Winter Cards", 7 Sep 2007 - Q: The Khan's Gambit: "you cannot use abilities on your cards at this battlefield" means cards in the battle correct.
A: Strictly speaking, no. "In the battle" is a meaningless phrase in Samurai Edition rules. Comprehensive Rules, Battlefield: "A battlefield should not be confused with a 'battle' which is a process in time."
That said, the card only prohibits actions in that location, not at other locations, such as home. Zen Faulkes, "The Khan's Gambit", 1 Aug 2007
