Rules Q&A
- Q: I am playing out of the Hall of Ancestors stronghold. I control a Samarhad. The Portals Open has resolved, so now my dead Ratling Personality is also Lion Clan. I play Samarhad's ability and gain control over a personality. Then I use the Hall of the Ancestors ability to give the stolen personality the Ratling trait. Will I have to give the personality back to its owner (or former controller) when the turn ends?
A: Yes.
http://rules.l5r.com/Timing: "If two or more reactions, triggered traits, or rules procedures are triggered at the same point in time, follow this sequence from A through F to resolve their order. ...
"C. Apply any triggered rulebook effects that are not part of actions(.)" That's the expiration of the copying effect from The Hall of Ancestors, which occurs due to rules text. Remember, the text in parentheses is just a reminder (http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Reminder_text).
"D. Apply any delayed effects that resolved previously and are timed to the trigger(.)" That's Samarhad.
A Personality will lose a copied Ratling trait before Samahad checks for it. Zen Faulkes, "Samarhad + The Hall of Ancestors", 24 Mar 2008 - Q: Recon Open: During battles at a target province this turn, your non-Shadowlands Hare Clan and Unaligned Human Personalities have +1F. Assumptions for this question: 1) Playing out of Stronghold Shiro Usagi ; 2) Event "The Portals Open" (I think) when revealed, allows me to align my personalities, some of whom may (will!) be nonhuman, to Hare.
I understand the action on Heiji means that I may have two different classes of targets, each of which may have +1F. Must I interpret the first class as "non-Shadowlands Hare Clan" "Human Personalities" or may I merely interpret it as "non-Shadowlands Hare Clan Personalities" ? (In the latter case, the nonhumans may gain the boost.)
A: Started a discussion with Rules and Design teams on this one, I'll update this thread when we figure it out. Chris Fuchs, "Usagi Heiji (TTT) Recon Open interpretation", 25 Sep 2007 - Q: (I tried the Search function for "portals open", and didn't get any match; looks like the search function is currently down)
This is mostly for a confirmation, but...
Does The Portals Open do anything useful for a player whose Stronghold does not have a faction trait? (ie, the Shadowlands under the current rules, and presumably the Maw's Grave under Samurai rules)
A: No. Shadowlands is not a faction/clan trait. Chris Fuchs, "Portals Open and Shadowlands", 17 Jul 2007 - Q: (Can I) use The Portals Open under the Spider's Lair to make my Ratlings cheaper?
A: Under Lotus rules, no. Ratling Personalities have an alignment.
Under Samurai rules, yes. Ratling Personalities have no alignment. Zen Faulkes, "Ratling and The Portals Open", 28 Jun 2007
