Rules Q&A
- Q: * Bayushi Kwanchai is in play with armor of the mountains in play but outside of the current battle. I play Iaijutsu duel against one of my opponents scorpion personalities, what happens when Kwanchai tries to replace the personality in the duel? (current guesses: it does, but it dosen´t enter the batlle, she can´t because she can´t enter the battle).
A: Kwanchai does not move when he replaces another Scorpion in a duel. The Armor of the Mountains has no effect on his Reaction. It will work just like it always does. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 March 2003", 25 Mar 2003 - Q: A scorpion player plays a political action, I use the Steel Throne to Issue a Challenge to the player, the challenge is accepted but Bayushi Kwanchai replaces the original personality, Kwanchai loses the duel.
Is the political action negated?
A: The Steel Throne: "If the Steel Throne is attached to a Courtier, bow it after another Personality performs a Political action to have your Courtier challenge that Personality. If that Personality refuses the challenge or loses the duel, cancel the action."
The challenged Personality did not lose the duel. The Political action is not canceled. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 March 2003", 13 Mar 2003 - Q: A question recently popped on the French mailing list.
Player Jojo sits accross the table, trying to crush my little Scorps with big-biggy lions
Kwanchai stands proudly in my fief, insuring no one besides him gets killed by nasty opponent ...
On my opponent's turn, he foolishly assumes he can kill my bowed Paneki, who's loaded for bear, with let's say 2 veteran bushi and an ogre warriors ... So nasty opponent Jojo play ambush, and his domotai tries to trap my poor, poor bowed Paneki.
Bad Jojo doesn't Sneak. I thus get first opportunity for action...
Kwanchai wants to step in and die under Domotai's assault.
Now, I understand Kwanchai can't effectively move into the battle. But ...
Can he still have Paneki removed from battle ?
Relevant text:
Ambush Limited: One of your units begins an attack against another player's unit. No other units can be assigned or move to the battle, and the battle cannot destroy a Province. The units cannot move to other Provinces from the battle. This does not replace your Attack Phase. After the battle, lose 5 Honor.
Bayushi Kwanchai Battle: Once per battle, if Kwanchai is home, send a bowed or unbowed Scorpion Clan Personality in your army home without bowing and move Kwanchai into your army.
A: Kwanchai's ability is still legal. You do as many of its effects as you can. Paneki moves to your home but Kwanchai does not move into the battle because Ambush prevents it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 October 2002", 23 Oct 2002 - Q: Seiko No Shiryo Scorpion Clan Ancestor +0F +1C 0HR 0G and Bayushi Kwanchai
if a player challenging a Scorpion Clan Personality and i have B.kwanchai with seiko no shiryo atached can i react with B.K. and later use the seiko's reaction ?
A: You must use Seiko when the challenge is issued, which is before you can use Kwanchai's reaction (he reacts to a Personality entering a duel). Plus, Kwanchai doesn't change who was challenged, so Seiko wouldn't make your opponent discard three cards even if she could be used second. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 September 2002", 4 Sep 2002 - Q: Blade of Truths Weapon Unique Reaction: After this Personality enters a duel, name a Focus value. The opposing player may not play Focus cards or Reactions with that Focus value during the duel.
Bayushi Kwanchai Text Scorpion Clan Martyr * Soul of Bayushi Tangen Reaction: When any bowed or unbowed Scorpion Clan Personality enters a duel, Kwanchai bows to replace the Personality in the duel. Battle: Once per battle, if Kwanchai is home, send a bowed or unbowed Scorpion Clan Personality in your army home without bowing and move Kwanchai into your army.
Rule Book: If something refers to a value that isn\222t specified or is missing, such as the Focus value of a Follower token or the Gold cost of an Event, consider that value to be 0. Effects that try to change a value that a card does not normally possess failóthe value will always be 0.
So if one of my Personalities who has the Blade of Truths attached enters a duel and I name 0 as the Focus value, my opponent can not use Bayushi Kwanchai\222s reaction because according to the Rule Book if there is no Focus value it is considered 0.
A: Kwanchai can still be used.
#1: Kwanchai's Reaction is used "when" a Personality enters a duel. The Blade's is used "after". Kwanchai's Reaction will always go first. Remember, the first tiebreaker when you have a timing problem is the exact wording of the cards.
#2: The Blade of Truths refers only to Reaction Action cards when it says "may not play Reactions". Yes, this could have been made clearer than just using the ambiguous word "play". Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 July 2002", 24 Jul 2002 - Q: Here's the combo I'm looking at.
Give Bayushi Kwanchai the Celestial Sword of the Scorpions. Assign both to an attacking or defending army. Use Higatsuku's battle action to force a personality in a duel. Here's where I get to thinking. Since the other personality is challenging me, I get first reaction. Use Kwanchai's reaction to replace Higatsuku, allow any reactions the other player has. If I get first action in the duel, choose strike.
A: Your opponent gets the first chance to play a Reaction with the wording "when one of your Personalities enters a duel, ...". Then you get a chance to use Kwanchai. Once both of you are done reacting, you get the first option to focus or strike. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 March 2002", 12 Mar 2002 - Q: Hi there. If anyone could answer this :
When is a personality considered to be in a duel ? This question is about 'Bayushi Kwanchai' and 'Kakita Rensei'. Can Kwanchai use his ability or not when a Scorpion personality is challenged by Rensei ? Can the challenged personality use the Kiho Double-Chi in front of Rensei ?....
A: No and no. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 November 2001", 8 Nov 2001 - Q: Bayushi Kwanchai - Does the ruling for Bayushi Tangen apply, so he can substitute for someone else's Scorpion Personality in a duel?
A: Yes. You still can't swap him for a Scorpion personality who's challenging one of your own Scorpions, but other than that, the combo works. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 14th", 14 Aug 2001 - Q: Bayushi Kwanchai - Does the ruling for Bayushi Tangen apply, so he can substitute for someone else's Scorpion Personality in a duel?
A: Sure. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 23rd", 23 Jul 2001 - Q: So, Bayushi Irezu is a Soul of Bayushi Kwanchai which means we can use Kwanchai as a legal proxy for Irezu. However Bayushi Kwanchai is the Soul of Bayushi Tangen.
Irezu = Kwanchai = Tangen
So can I use Tangen as a legal proxy for Irezu?
A: Per the Emperor Edition rulebook, page 116, "“Soul of” Personalities are equivalent to the older card for deck construction purposes. In a game, you may use the older card as a proxy for the “Soul of” version, but you must inform the other player of any differences in stats or wording between the two."
This definition does not take into account any other cards which may also have "Soul of" relationships with the original version of the card. Therefore, as Bayushi Irezu is the Soul of Bayushi Kwanchai, you may only use copies of Bayushi Kwanchai as a proxy for Bayushi Irezu. Jon Palmer, "Soul of a Soul of", 4 Jan 2012
