Rules Q&A
- Q: Situation: I Wedge the 3F/1C Scorpion Clan Samurai created from Shosuro Infiltrator(SI). Questionable results: Wedge destroys the Samurai when the battle ends. Since it has been ruled that Bayushi Kwanchai Exp. can negate a Scorpion Clan personality's death from Wedge and since the timing on the final effects of SI and Wedge conflict ("remove from game" and "unable to target" both happen "after the battle ends,") can I choose to have the "remove from game" effect happen before the "unable to target" effect and keep the 3F/1C Scorpion Clan Samurai permanently? If so can I finish the rest of SI's effect and return it to play attached to the original personality?
A: Since when does Shosuro Infiltrator target anything? Cards don't have to target themselves to use their own abilities that can't target someone else instead. There isn't any choice in the matter with a clear self-reference, so there is no targeting decision.
Wedge can't prevent the infiltrator from removing itself from the game. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 December 2004", 10 Dec 2004 - Q: BTW, the reason I didn't find it in the rulings the first time I looked is I did a search on 'Kwanchai', and his name is spelled wrong (Kwanchi).
A: Not any more. Thanks. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 31 October 2003", 31 Oct 2003 - Q: I seem to recall reading a ruling once that implied that deceased personalities kept the permanent-duration changes to their stats even when in places other than the discard pile sideways.
A: No need to rely on memory. It's in the Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 39, in bold type. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 26 August 2003", 27 Aug 2003 - Q: Assuming I bought out Bayushi Kwanchai XP from a Shamate Pass earlier in the game, increasing his PH by 2, and I later use his ability to 'die' to the top of the dynasty deck, when he reappears in one of my provinces next turn, what is his PH?
A: Increased by the effect of the Pass (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 26 August 2003", 27 Aug 2003 - Q: So, Bayushi Irezu is a Soul of Bayushi Kwanchai which means we can use Kwanchai as a legal proxy for Irezu. However Bayushi Kwanchai is the Soul of Bayushi Tangen.
Irezu = Kwanchai = Tangen
So can I use Tangen as a legal proxy for Irezu?
A: Per the Emperor Edition rulebook, page 116, "“Soul of” Personalities are equivalent to the older card for deck construction purposes. In a game, you may use the older card as a proxy for the “Soul of” version, but you must inform the other player of any differences in stats or wording between the two."
This definition does not take into account any other cards which may also have "Soul of" relationships with the original version of the card. Therefore, as Bayushi Irezu is the Soul of Bayushi Kwanchai, you may only use copies of Bayushi Kwanchai as a proxy for Bayushi Irezu. Jon Palmer, "Soul of a Soul of", 4 Jan 2012 - Q: Scorpian personality A with an attached follower issues a Iaijutsu Challenge to personality B. Personality B wins the duel. As a reaction to the duel Kawanchi bows for his ability.
Bayushi Kwanchai (Experienced)
Text Scorpion Clan Martyr. Experienced. Unique Reaction: Bow Kwanchai before one of your bowed or unbowed Scorpion Clan Personalities dies during battle or duel resolution to negate that destruction. Either destroy Kwanchai or put him on top of your Dynasty deck (your choice).
Does the follower attached to Scorpian personality A die?
A: No. The Challenge only destroys the Personality, not the unit. If the Personality had actually been destroyed, it would have taken the attached cards with him - but he didn't die, so nothing bad happens to them. Martin Lund, "Bayushi Kwanchai (Experienced)", 23 Mar 2005
