Rules Q&A
- Q: I tried a search for this one, and Desperate Plea didn't come up anywhere, hopefully this hasn't already been asked and answered.
Desperate Plea: Unique Political Limited: Gain 5 Honor. Permanently reduce the strength of each of your provinces by 5. After your next Events Phase begins, lose 5 Honor; effects do not negate or reduce this loss
and the Spider Clan Strongholds (for example, The Spider's Lair: You do not lose Honor from Fate and Spider Clan cards you own. In your Dynasty Phase, one time for each of your provinces destroyed this game, you may refill a Province face-up.
Does the Spider Clan ignore the 5 honor loss that happens on the next turn?
A: Spider Clan's "do not" is neither a negation nor a reduction. In fact, that "lose 5 honor" never happens for a Spider's Lair player.
See here for more information on "do not" as it pertains to game text.
Enjoy your 5 honor for 6 gold! Dan Jacobson, "Spider Clan Strongholds + Desperate Plea (THW)", 14 Nov 2008 - Q: Hi,
The Spider's Lair You do not lose Honor from Fate and Spider Clan cards you own. In your Dynasty Phase, one time for each of your provinces destroyed this game, you may refill a Province face-up.
Does the clause "You do not lose Honor from Fate and Spider Clan cards you own.", still apply when one of their Spider Clan personalities die dishonorably, meaning, they don't lose honor from that effect?
Thanks!

"Does not prevent honor loss from death of dishonored Personalities." Zen Faulkes, "Spider Dies Dishonorable", 8 Mar 2008 - Q: A player who cannot lose Honor cannot pay the cost “Lose 2 Honor.”
Read that in the SE Rules, and have read all the posts about the Spider's Lair. I realize this question has been asked several times already, so please don't be angry, and simply ignore this post if you can't answer it. If you can answer my question, could you possibly sticky it, since everyone probably wants to know?
Anyway, it seems by the current wording the cost of losing honor on a Fate card cannot be paid by the Spider's Lair. Yet, this seems rather counterintuitive as cards like Cursed Gift seem intended for the Spider Clan. Is there a definitive ruling on this? If not, when can players expect one? I guess when the set finally releases at the end of July?
Thank you for your time and your patience, I (and everyone else should) really appreciate it.
A: Comprehensive Rules, Glossary, Do not: ""A phrase meaning that a certain effect or type of effect simply does not occur(.)"
Comprehensive Rules, Effects, Definition of effects: "An effect is anything, other than a cost..."
If you "do not" lose honor, you can still pay costs involving an honor loss. Zen Faulkes, "Paying Costs", 30 Jun 2007 - Q: (Can I) use The Portals Open under the Spider's Lair to make my Ratlings cheaper?
A: Under Lotus rules, no. Ratling Personalities have an alignment.
Under Samurai rules, yes. Ratling Personalities have no alignment. Zen Faulkes, "Ratling and The Portals Open", 28 Jun 2007 - Q: My friend and I are not sure if The Spider's Lair stronghold's trait (You do not lose Honor from Fate and Spider Clan cards you own.) makes it so that they are immune to any sort of honor loss that even remotely involves their Spider Clan Personalities.
A: No, it does not.
Rules Archive, Effects: "The source of an effect is generally where the effect is physically written in ink. Exceptions include cards or strongholds that grant actions to other cards (e.g., the ability of a Personality controlled by a Yogo Towers player belongs to the Personality)."
It only negates the honor loss if the honor loss is printed on a Spider Clan card. Zen Faulkes, "The Spider Clan and Honor Loss", 12 Jun 2007 - Q: This is a simple question, but it might have some relevance.
I hear that Daigotsu Rekai XP4 has the spider mon in his foil version, and thus, she's considered to be a Spider Clan personality, but she doesn't have the alignment trait.
Is she considered to be a Spider Clan Personality when playing The Spider's Lair? Do I lose honor when I buy her?
A: The printed version of Daigotsu Rekai exp 4 does have the Spider Clan trait. Chris Fuchs, "Daigotsu Rekai xp4 and The Spider's Lair", 26 May 2007 - Q: When I pay the cost of a Spider personnality with The Spider's Lair, do I losehonor? I ask because paying the cost seems to bow the fortress before the personnality actually enters.
A: Traits are always active, even if the card is bowed. Chris Fuchs, "Spider's lair and honor", 25 May 2007
