Rules Q&A
- Q: If I use Bayushi's Mask to move Bayushi Muhito after the Cavalry Declaration segment, do I get to take a battle or open action? For example, could I destroy Bayushi's Mask and move Muhito to oppose a personality and use his reaction to play Overwhelmed?
Bayushi Muhito Reaction: Once per turn, after Muhito moves during an Attack Phase, take a Battle or Open action.
A: You could use the Reaction, but it won't do anything noticeable. Pages 74 and 75 clearly state when you can take Open and Battle Actions, and the only time you can do so during the Attack Phase is during the Battle Action Segment. Since you haven't begun the Battle Action Segment and Muhito gives you the timing opportunity to play a Battle or Open Action, it won't do you any good since those types of Actions are yet illegal to play.
Effects that allow you to play an Action outside of its normal phase / segment designations either:
A.) Make it explicitly clear that they do so, such as with Plans Within Plans.
OR
B.) Can't be played at any time that they would abide the rule they are breaking, such as the abjectly horrifying (and completely hypothetical) concept of a card which read, "Battle: You may take a Limited Action after this."
* Shudder * Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 November 2004", 12 Nov 2004 - Q: [sorry for not copying in the Oracle text for the referenced cards, slow connection here...]
My opponent attacks my province A. I defend with Bayushi Muhito in province B and leave Bayushi Irezu at home.
He resolves province A. Can I use Irezu's ability targeting Muhito to move Muhito home from province B (not relevant for the battle in progress) but get Irezu to province A's battlefield (very relevant for the battle in progress) and score an additional action from Muhito's reaction?
A: No.
Irezu's ability reads: Battle: If Irezu is at home, target another Scorpion Clan Personality you control: Move him home. Move Irezu to the current battlefield.
If the battle at province A is being resolved, targeting a Personality at province B does not satisfy the Rule of Location: A card in a unit must be at the current battlefield to be targeted by, or explicitly perform, a Battle action.
Alex
PS Note that Irezu's wording would allow you to do this under the old Rule of Relevance - but note also that Kwanchai and Tangen, who were printed with the old rule, both explicitly required that the targeted Personality was at the current battlefield. What? Does this also mean My Utaku Yu Pan's battle maidens don't get +1F bonus while attacking if I am just the ally who happens to be on the Attacker's side? Because seriously that's un-intuitive! There is no mention of "Attacker" on Hachigoro.
A: "While attacking" on a card that can be in an army is not the same as "when you are attacking," as "you" is the controller. Zen Faulkes, "Akodo Hachigoro vs. Bayushi Muhito", 3 Apr 2008 - Q: Sample Scenario Lion and Crane alliance attack Scorpion
A: In any given Attack Phase, only one player is the Attacker, and only one player is the Defender. Other players are allies, if they are involved at all. Their units may be attacking or defending, or in attacking or defending armies, but the players are attacking or defending allies.
Only one of the Lion and Crane players is the Attacker; only that player can use Hachigoro's Reaction. Alex Jones, "Akodo Hachigoro vs. Bayushi Muhito", 3 Apr 2008 - Q: Refering to this post: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66805
Akodo Hachigoro: Reaction: If you are attacking, after armies at Hachigoro's battlefield engage: You may target one of the Defender's units, move it to Hachigoro's battlefield, and straighten it. You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action or pass this battle.
Bayushi Muhito: Reaction: After an action resolves that moved Muhito to or from a battlefield: Take an additional Battle action.
*Bolded sections are emphasized for argued points*
I don't see anything in Muhito's effect that allows it to override or negate Hachigoro's effects.
Did Muhito move? Yes.
Has the movement's action's effects resolved? No.
Hachigoro's ability distinctly says that it's player gets the first battle action. Muhito's says take an additional Battle Action. Would the correct chain not be that Muhito's action puts the opportunity for it's player to take an additonal Battle Action (though actually being the Defenders first action) after the Hacigoro's secured first action of this battle but before his own first regular action?
Basically:
1) Armies engage, Attacking player reacts with Hachigoro moving Muhito, securing first Battle Action or Pass option. 2) Defender reacts with Muhito, securing an additional Battle action. 3) Attacking player decides whether to take a Battle action or pass. 4) Defender takes his Muhito secured Battle action. 5) Defender takes his "first" Battle action.
A: No. Muhito gives you an additional action, outside the regular sequence. Hachigoro's last effect only affects the regular sequence.
So: 1) Armies engage, Attacking player reacts with Hachigoro moving Muhito. 1a) Defender reacts with Muhito, "securing" an additional Battle action. Hachigoro "secures" first Battle Action or Pass option. 2) Hachigoro's Reaction finishes resolving, so Defender takes the additional Battle action. 3) Other reactions to Engaging... 4) Decide who gets the first regular opportunity to play or pass - because of Hachigoro, this is the Attacker. 5) Attacker has his first regular Battle action opportunity. 6) Defender has his first regular Battle action opportunity.
Hope this clears that up! Alex Jones, "Akodo Hachigoro vs. Bayushi Muhito", 3 Apr 2008 - Q: Reaction: After an action resolves that moved Muhito to or from a battlefield: Take an additional Battle action.
Reaction: If you are attacking, after armies at Hachigoro's battlefield engage: You may target one of the Defender's units, move it to Hachigoro's battlefield, and straighten it. You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action or pass this battle.
A: Note that your opportunity to react occurs immediately after Hachigoro's reaction completes, which is before you begin to determine who gets the first Battle action in this battle. Alex Jones, "Akodo Hachigoro vs. Bayushi Muhito", 31 Mar 2008 - Q: I searched for Muhito but found surprizingly little. I just wish to clarify a few things with this personality His ability: Reaction: After an action resolves that moved Muhito to or from a battlefield: Take an additional action.
Encircled Terrain Terrain Battle: Before this battle’s resolution, the Attacker and Defender, in the order of your choice, each choose one of his units at the current battlefield. Then, move all other units there home.
1)If Encircled Terrain is in the current battle and he is one of the people I send home, do I get another action (after delayed terrans resolve?
2)If yes then it's safe to assume that if I do then if I have multiple ones in that army I get multiple action?
3)I only have to move him out once correct? So if I move him back into the battle with my action I don't have to send him back home
4) Now the tricky one, lets assume with my extra action I play Control the Field, which lets me destroy a terrain and play a new one, if I do what craziness happens?
Control the Field: Battle: Target one of your Personalities at the current battlefield with Tactician, Scout, or 3 or more Chi: Destroy a target Terrain. You may take an additional Battle action to play a Terrain from your hand.
A: Short answer: That won't work.
Long answer: Bayushi Muhito cannot legally respond to to Encircled Terrain, because Muhito's ability is triggered "After an action resolves that moved Muhito to or from a battlefield." An action resolves after all of its immediate effects are done (http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_acti ... n_resolves), but Encircled Terrain only moves units as a delayed effect. Muhito cannot respond to delayed effects.
Bonus "Want me to make it worse?" long answer: It is legal for Bayushi Muhito to react to an action that moves units "before a battle resolves" or "before battle resolution," but you can't legally use the effect, because "Effects 'before a battle resolves' happen after the Combat Segment ends and before the Resolution Segment begins" (http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#Resolution_Segment). Battle actions are only legal during the Combat Segment, and you're not in that segment any more. Zen Faulkes, "Bayushi Muhito and Encircled Terrain", 4 Sep 2007 - Q: I have Bayushi Muhito with any attachment with a printed battle action (let´s suppose the clan armor). If I move it with Doomed Intentions to a defending army, how I resolve that?
a) Move Muhito, play Battle printed in the unit (Doomed) and then any battle (Muhito´s reaction) b) Move Muhito, play any battle (Muhito´s reaction) and then Battle printed in the unit (Doomed) c) I can only take one aditional action (the one I choose). Thanks.
Bayushi Muhito Reaction: After an action resolves that moved Muhito to or from a battlefield: Take an additional Battle action.
Doomed Intentions Battle: If there are enemy units at the current battlefield: Move one of your target units there. If it moved, straighten it. If you are the Defender, take an additional Battle action printed on a card in the unit. (Sorry, I don´t know why I can´t quote the relevant text... )
A: Doomed Intention's extra action first, then Muhito's reaction action.
Essentially, the extra action from Doomed Intentions gets 'queued up' before you have the opportunity to react with Muhito, which then adds an additional action opportunity to the end of the 'queue'. Chris Fuchs, "Bayushi Muhito and Doomed Intentions.", 9 Aug 2007 - Q: So if I'm reading this right: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=59770
1) Suppose I'm the Unicorn defender. The active Scorpion player moves Bayushi Muhito into a battle opposing my Unicorn personality. Active player reacts and says "I choose to take an additional action" (this is a delayed effect) I (Unicorn player) play Cut Them Off to bow Muhito. Scorpion player then takes his additional action. Bayushi Muhito Reaction: After an action resolves that moved Muhito to or from a battlefield: Take an additional Battle action. Is this correct?
A: Yes. You have to wait until someone would normally be given the priority to take a Battle Action before any "additional battle actions" can be taken. That means the previous Battle Action and its Reactions have to all be dealt with first. Martin Lund, "Cut Them Off, additional action follow-ups...", 31 Jul 2007 - Q: Bayushi Muhito
Reaction: Once per turn, after Muhito moves during an Attack Phase, take a Battle or Open action
From the rulebook p77 :
4. ATTACK PHASE (OPTIONAL)
This phase has five segments:
1. Declaration Segment
2. Infantry Maneuvers Segment
3. Cavalry Maneuvers Segment
4. Battle Action Segment
5. Resolution Segment
From the rulebook p34
Cardinal Rule
If any card or Stronghold explicitly contradicts these rules, the card or Stronghold takes precedence.
I would like to know the reason why Muhito doesn't create an opportunity to play a Battle action or Open action, aven outside the Battle action segment. The card contradicts the rulebook, so takes precedence no? Even during maneuvers or Resolution, are we not still in the attack phase?
A: Does he say, "Even during X" where X is a place it is not normally legal to take an Open or Battle Action?
No.
Is it never legal to use his ability in a place with Open and Battle Actions are legal?
No.
Then he doesn't break the rule prohibiting you from taking a particular kind of Action outside of its designated Phases / Segments.
The same thing goes for Ciphered Scroll not letting you cast a Limited Spell during the Battle Action Segment, which you can see in the March Archives here. Martin Lund, "Bayushi Muhito", 1 Apr 2005
