Rules Q&A
- Q: [sorry for not copying in the Oracle text for the referenced cards, slow connection here...]
My opponent attacks my province A. I defend with Bayushi Muhito in province B and leave Bayushi Irezu at home.
He resolves province A. Can I use Irezu's ability targeting Muhito to move Muhito home from province B (not relevant for the battle in progress) but get Irezu to province A's battlefield (very relevant for the battle in progress) and score an additional action from Muhito's reaction?
A: No.
Irezu's ability reads: Battle: If Irezu is at home, target another Scorpion Clan Personality you control: Move him home. Move Irezu to the current battlefield.
If the battle at province A is being resolved, targeting a Personality at province B does not satisfy the Rule of Location: A card in a unit must be at the current battlefield to be targeted by, or explicitly perform, a Battle action.
Alex
PS Note that Irezu's wording would allow you to do this under the old Rule of Relevance - but note also that Kwanchai and Tangen, who were printed with the old rule, both explicitly required that the targeted Personality was at the current battlefield. Alex Jones, "Bayushi Irezu and Bayushi Muhito", 24 Nov 2012 - Q: If i play Crippling Weather and my oponent plays an action to move away from the battle, after that action's resolutios does the personality still bow?
For example, let's say i've played Crippling Weather against a ninja player:
a) He reacts with Bayushi Muhito xp2 and goes to another battlefield. Does Muhito bow after the action's resolution?
b) He plays Black Hearts, Red Blades and goes home. What happens with the targeted personalities?
Relevant text:
Crippling weather Winter Battle: Destroy all terrains in play. Until this battle ends, no new terrains may be played. After each time this battle an action ends, bow any Personalities who performed it.
Bayushi Muhito xp2 Reaction: After the resolution of another player's Battle action: Move Muhito to a different location.
Black Hearts, Red Blades Ninja Battle: Target two of your unbowed Ninja Personalities without non-Ninja Followers: Move them home. If both of them moved, discard any cards in the current battlefield's province and draw two cards.
A: Crippling Weather bows any Personality who performs an action. It doesn't care whether it's a Battle action or a Reaction action, it doesn't care where the Personality is now, it doesn't care whether any other Personality or Follower also performed the action, it doesn't care whether the action came from an ability on the Personality, on a Strategy, on an attachment, on a Holding, Region, Event or Stronghold or in the rulebook.
"This battle" is a time frame, not a location. "This battlefield" or "The battlefield at this province" is a location. Alex Jones, "Crippling Weather and movement from the battle", 20 May 2011 - Q: Since the announcement has disappeared, I think it's ok to ask about TDoW, right?
A personality with the (unbowed) Armor of the Loyal Son receives a chi penalty token which unfortunately reduces his chi to 0 (all the chi penalties come from tokens). The trait is triggered, destroys a personality, and the death is negated until the end of the turn (due to negation now being an ongoing effect that lasts until the end of turn unless stated otherwise)
If, at the end of the turn, the armor is unbowed, what happens? a) Negation ceases, chi 0 is checked and the personality with the armor dies because the turn ends and the negation can't save him now. (Perhaps killing him somewhat in a limbo between turns?) b) Negation ceases, chi 0 is checked over and over and triggers the trait again, again and again until it can't negate anymore and the personality is destroyed (perhaps killing everything in that player's side) because each negation effect ends right after it's applied but it doesn't stop the trait from triggering again. c) The trait is triggered only once at the beginning of each turn, destroying a personality every turn until the armor begins a turn bowed and isn't triggered (card text). The negation saves him once each turn. d) Any other (please explain)
If the chi penalties came from temporary penalties that cease at the end of the turn (e.g. Bayushi Muhito XP2) , is this any different? Does the active player have a say in this?
A: Armor of the Loyal Son's negation in not an ongoing negation, it is an instantaneous negation. As explained under Duration and scope of prevention effects, an instantaneous negation is insufficient to negate the destruction of the Personality with 0 chi:
EXCEPTION: Special rules apply to the prevention of Personality destruction from zero Chi (see Chi death rule) and other continuously applied destruction effects. Effects that prevent one instance of destruction, such as the trait "Before this card is destroyed: Negate the destruction," will not prevent destruction from such an effect. Only a continuous or ongoing “parent” prevention effect (for example, "This Personality will not be destroyed" as a trait) can overcome the Personality's destruction.
