Rules Q&A
- Q: Based on this ruling
http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=91045
I was wondering if the ranged attack from Thunder Dragon Bay could be modified.
A: Yes, it can. Brook Cunningham, "Thunder Dragon Bay and Ranged Attack", 23 Jul 2011 - Q: Also, if I naval a thunder action and its effects get canceled by a card like Reinforce the Gate will I still be able to use the trait to give +1 Force to one of my personalities? Or if the action is negated by Iron Will or Smoke Screen would I still be able to get the +1F?
A: Yes, in those cases, Thunder Dragon Bay's trait would still trigger. All actions have a "resolution", even if their effects are negated or "do not" happen. Brook Cunningham, "Thunder Dragon Bay and Ranged Attack", 23 Jul 2011 - Q: Thunder Dragon Bay; gives people +1F when you perform a thunder action. I don't see any cards with [Thunder Battle:] so im assuming that cards with the thunder keyword are considered Thunder actions. Do battle actions on personalities with the Thunder keyword count as a thunder action? Or do battle actions on cards performed by personalities with the Thunder keyword count?
Also, if a personality at another battlefield, has a reaction can it be used?
Hachigoro, if i control no units at the battlefield can i still use his battle action cause it would bring him into play for the rule of presence?
A: Here are the keyword rules for abilities: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#Abilities
Just for giggles, I'm going to replace all if the examples, which use "Ninja" in the online wiki, with "Thunder".
"Ability keywords: An ability has any boldface keywords that appear immediately before its designator. "Example: “Thunder Battle:” In this case, the ability is a Thunder ability.
"A card has any keywords of its abilities. "Example: A card with the ability “Thunder Battle:” has the Thunder keyword.
"An ability also has any keywords that are on its card. "Example: An ability on a Thunder card is a Thunder ability.
"EXCEPTION: Keywords that a card only has from one of its abilities are not given to other abilities on the card. "Example: A Thunder ability on a card does not by itself give Thunder to any other abilities on that card.
Each word in an ability’s own keywords is a separate keyword. Example: A “Bushido Virtue” ability is a Bushido ability and a Virtue ability." Zen Faulkes, "Thunder Actions?", 27 Jan 2011 - Q: Parden me if this has been answered before, looking for a card with a '-' in the title kinda messes up the search engine (Searching for "Storm-filled Sails" will bring back results that have the words Storm and Sails but do not have the word filled in it because it thinks I'm trying to omit it.
Storm-filled Sails
Thunder Limited: Until the turn ends, you have the ability "Battle: Attach a target attachment... (the rest is not important for my question)
Using the previous ruling about katas and the ring of the void as an base line, does the Battle ability from this thunder action also count as a thunder action (obviously for the purposes of Thunder Dragon Bay?)
Thank you in advance
A: No, sorry. It does not.
Only the "Limited" action that grants the ability has "Thunder" from the card. The ability it grants doesn't. Brook Cunningham, "Storm-filled Sails: Thunder x2?", 25 Jan 2010 - Q: I apologize for the redundent question but Zen I am afraid that the previous threads explination was about as clear as mud to me.
On Thunder Dragon Bay ability
After the resolution to one of your Thunder actions: Give your target personality +1F
Is the "Once per turn" non printed but understood phrase in play here?
How long does this bonus last?
If a Thunder Action is an action from a card that has the "Thunder" keyword on it. Does a personality who has the "Thunder" keyword perform a normal action or an action from an attachment that does not have the "Thunder" keyword also considered a Thunder Action?
Thank you
A: Abilities can only be used once per turn, but conditional traits resolve any time their trigger is met. See Abilities and actions and Card features, Abilities: An ability is a block of text that creates an action. Abilities are written in a mixture of boldface and normal text, and include one or more of the boldface designators “Limited:” “Open:” “Battle:” or “Reaction:” that indicate at what point the action can be taken. Abilities are never required; in particular, Reactions never happen automatically. They must be specifically activated by a player.
The trait does not specify a duration, so the default applies: the bonus lasts until the end of the turn. See Ongoing effects: Ongoing effects last until the end of the turn in which they were applied unless otherwise indicated.
An action has the keywords from the card it is on, which is not necessarily the Personality performing the action. In particular if a Thunder Personality performs the action on an attached Oni-Daikyu, the action is not a Thunder action. See Abilities: An ability has any boldface keywords that appear immediately before its designator. A card has any keywords of its abilities. An ability also has any keywords that are on its card. EXCEPTION: Keywords that a card only has from one of its abilities are not given to other abilities on the card. Note that keywords on a Personality do not affect abilities on attachments. Alex Jones, "Thunder Dragon Bay", 25 Jan 2010 - Q: Does ("thunder action") mean that an action on a card with the keyword "thunder" on it? Or could it be a personality with the "thunder" keyword performing an action(?)
A: They are effectively the same thing.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#Abilities: "An ability has any boldface keywords that appear immediately before its designator. Example: “Ninja Battle:” In this case, the ability is a Ninja ability.
"A card has any keywords of its abilities. Example: A card with the ability “Ninja Battle:” has the Ninja keyword.
"An ability also has any keywords that are on its card. Example: An ability on a Ninja card is a Ninja ability." Zen Faulkes, "Thunder Dragon Bay", 24 Jan 2010 - Q: From Thunder Dragon Bay, is it possible during battle to double the ranged attack with Storm of Arrows or Sniping? Even though it's on the stronghold and not a personality?
A: Storm of Arrows technically shouldn't work, because Strongholds weren't considered "cards" until Emperor or so, I think? However, I don't believe I meticulously Oracle'd every card that referred to a "card" to say "non-Stronghold card", so there may be a current loophole there. 😛 Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 27 Aug 2023
