Rulings
- Cannot gain force bonuses from Tattoo actions (e.g., Crab Tattoo). [JA, 2 May 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 127
Rules Q&A
- Q: I saw an assertion on another list that Genshuo's limitation isn't affected by Dragon Tattoo because the action gives a token, not a bonus and it is the token that gives the bonus. Perhaps it was the way this was said in that other forum, but could you clarify?
A: That interpretation is correct. The source of the Fire token bonuses is the tokens, not the action that created them. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 July 2002", 25 Jul 2002 - Q: Greetings!
Curious. The Rulings Archive states Crab Tattoo as an example of an action which Togashi Genshuo/Hitomi Juppun may not gain Force bonuses from. But it's not an action that gives him the bonus; it's assignment/location.
A: Wrong. That's when the bonus begins. It was still given to him by the Action card. Mechanically, there's no difference in the source of a bonus from a card that says "give someone +1F right now" and "give someone +1F at the start of your next turn," for example. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 May 2002", 15 May 2002 - Q: Here is a stumper (I think):
A. Crab Tattoo Question
1. Crab Tattoo says "Limited: Target one of your personalities with the Tattooed trait and without a Crab Tattoo. For the rest of the game, the personality has a Crab Tattoo and gains +4F while in a defending army."
2. Togashi Genshuo has the trait "Genshuo cannot gain force bonuses from actions."
3. The Archives say that when a personality gains a tattoo, he/she does not gain the "(keyword) tattoo" TRAIT.
I read from the above that the personality would NOT gain the Crab Tattoo text as a trait, and therefore Genshuo would not be able to gain +4F from having a Crab Tattoo.
A: I would agree with that assessment. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 May 2002", 3 May 2002 - Q: Question regarding Togashi Genshuo & Frenzy: The MRP of Frenzy reads "Battle: Give a Crab Clan Personality +3F, or give a non-Crab Personality +2F. Either way, dishonor the Personality. When the turn ends, destroy the Personality's Followers. Lose 2 Honor." Togashi Genshuo reads "Genshuo cannot gain Force bonuses from actions." If Genshuo is targetted with Frenzy is he still dishonored?
A: Yes. And his Followers are destroyed. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 May 2002", 3 May 2002 - Q: If Togashi Genshuo gets a crab tatoo, will he be able to recieve the extra force while defending?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 January 2002", 16 Jan 2002 - Q: I was reading on this list earlier how Shrine of the Ki-rin can save people like Iuchi Shahai since the modifiers came from tokens rather than actions. So I was wondering then if by an extension of this ruling, Togashi Genshuo (who can't normally be recieve force bonuses from actions) can benefit from tokens from a dragon tattoo.
A: He can. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 October 2001", 11 Oct 2001
